When I got the message from @blackthought that Dave NY had transitioned to the next life, I was hurt and it hit me hard. I hadn’t talk to Dave in a while but he had been a thread that me Tariq , @talibkweli , the Great Jay Dilla and a lot of us in music had known and relied on. His Energy was special and unique in that with Dave, you knew everything was gonna be good and all would be taken care of. He took care of Dilla when he was sick and looked out in anyway possible and anyone that came around he made feel like Family. If there are angels on this planet, he was one and will continue to be with all the love and energy he left us with. My prayers and love to his family and loved ones. I know you and Dilla are saying “ there go Rash on that Hollywood Stuff”. Ha. GOD Bless your Soul my Brother. Love

At 12 years old, Tamir Rice was tragically shot and killed by the Cleveland Police while he was playing in the park. Today would’ve been his 17TH Birthday. My book was released a lil over a week ago. We started the book tour in NYC with a lot of excitement and good energy. You still never really know how it will be received by the public. Although making that list is exciting, I'm more thrilled that this book is resonating with people in the way that I intended to do and in some ways that I didnt anticipate it affecting people positively. The Sign-IO gloves in essence translate signed hand movements into audible speech. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Allela's gloves feature sensors located on each finger that detect the positioning of each finger, including how much each finger will bend into a given position. The glove connects via Bluetooth to an Android phone which then will leverage use the text-to-speech function to provide translated speech to the hand gestures of a person signing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The inspiration behind the Sign-IO gloves comes from the personal experience of having a young niece who is deaf. He nor his family knows sign language and often struggled to adequately and consistently communicate with her. "My niece wears the gloves, pairs them with her phone or mine, then starts signing. I’m able to understand what she’s saying," Allela shared in an interview with The Guardian. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Allela’s vision for the gloves is to have them placed in schools for special needs children throughout his home country of Kenya and then expand from there to positively impact the experiences of as many deaf or hearing-impaired children as possible. Billy served his time and has redeemed himself and is doing the work to help others not fall in that cycle of violence and destruction of our own. In this picture he stands in between Ben Wilson’s brothers who have shown truly what we can be as human beings. Forgiving, merciful and allowing others to redeem, will heal our communities. Earlier today, we went to visit San Quentin State Prison to meet men who’ve transformed their lives from being in some of the darkest places to being a light for themselves and others. Going into San Quentin reminds me of where we can be if we practice forgiveness and rehabilitation and recognize that each of us are human beings even when we have done wrong. “Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: Only love can do that” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Over the past couple of years, I have visited numerous prisons to connect with the men and women inside and listen to their stories. I have come across some of the most enlightened and inspiring individuals I have ever met in my life. 21 year old Christopher Young was sentenced to death in 2006 after being convicted of killing Hasmukhbhai Patel during a robbery in 2004. Chris has spent the past 12 years in solitary confinement on death row where he has matured into a thoughtful and peaceful man with a desire to help others. But the State of Texas seeks to execute Chris on July 17, 2018. I must state that the act of murder is something that I do not support and I do not condone or accept at all. But I do believe in rehabilitation, reconciliation and redemption. Knowing the story of Chris, the trauma he faced growing up, and the pain he has experienced, I have empathy and compassion for him. Mitesh Patel, the victim's son, suffered greatly in the wake of his father’s murder in 2004. But he does not want the State of Texas to execute Chris Young because he does not want Chris’ young daughters to grow up without a father the way he did. I believe that we as a people have the capacity to forgive and make an effort to give others a chance to be better and in that, we can stop cycles of pain, violence and suffering. I believe when someone leaves this earth, it should be in GOD’s Hands and not Ours. On one of the prison visits last year, one brother asked me to, “imagine being defined by the worst thing you’ve ever done and trapped by one act for the rest of your life.” Join me and sign the petition to advocate for clemency for Chris Young by clicking the link in my bio. #SaveChrisYoung

On this day three years ago, our Brother #KaliefBrowder took his own life after being locked away at Rikers at just 16 years old for three years without ever being convicted for a crime simply because he couldn’t afford bail. James Shaw Jr. is a HERO! @J_Shaw9 is the man who put his life on the line last week when he single handedly disarmed the mass shooter who murdered four of our brothers and sisters at the Waffle House in Tennessee. Shaw Jr. rushed the gunman, grabbed the gun’s barrel, pulled it away and threw it over the Waffle House counter. He suffered a gunshot wound and burns from grabbing the gun’s barrel. James Shaw Jr. has also started a GoFundMe page to benefit the families of the victims and has already raised $200,000 so far. God Bless this Brother. I’m deeply inspired by his courage and resolve. Wow.

I spoke at North Carolina A&T today for the Chancellors Speaker Series to the Male Mentoring Group and was really inspired by these great young people. I also got a chance to see the statue of The 4 A&T freshman that carried out the lunch counter sit-in of February 1, 1960!
