When I started my meditation practice I was taken by the Mantra, “Sat Nam”. Something about those words held a great power for me. I found out that in the ancient Sikh language called Gurmukhi, Sat means truth and Nam means name. Together, Sat Nam essentially translates into something deeper: “I am truth,” or “Truth is my essence.” I Am truth!!!!💥💥💥 Wwoooooow!! I am. You are. We are. Sam Nam is about calling forth and expressing your true identity without holding back the greatness of the frequency you bring. Not only for yourself but for others too. I love this word. I even thought about using it as a name for one of my kids 🤣🤣 But imagine if SAT NAM was your name?? You‘d never be able to forget that meaning, “I AM truth”. So say YES to your own truth! To everything you know deeply about who you are. For the courage it takes to be more of yourself! Sat Nam! 💜💜💜

Since I played two pianos at the GRAMMYS this year people have been coming up to me asking if it was as easy as it looked……. Reflections 💧 💧 💧 Have you ever felt like this? I was always very humble. I’ve actually had to learn how to not confuse humility with not valuing my own worth, to be honest. That’s been a process—really recognizing that humility or modesty can sometimes be a cover-up for self-worth issues. You’ve got to be careful, because you have to make sure that you’re demanding what you deserve. You could easily say, “No, I’m good. I don’t need much. I’m simple,” and that’s cool. Happy beautiful and glorious Mother’s Day Y’all! To all my fellow mothers, lovers, givers, caretakers and light bringers out there, you are amazing! Deep bow to all of you. Women are all mothers and nurturers with or without children. Of all of my jobs, parenting is my favorite. It teaches me so much about myself about capacity, patience and about consciousness. It’s the most beautiful and it is also the hardest. I remember when I was pregnant with Egypt thinking -- What if I’m not cut out for motherhood? What if I fail at being responsible for a child—a life? What if I can’t do this? There’s probably not a person on earth who hasn’t asked those questions in some form, at some point in time. The fear of possible inadequacy is real. I felt determined to do for my child what I’d once struggled to do for myself: rid my life of all circumstances that no longer served me. {excerpt from my book More Myself} Ain’t that crazy!? I distinctly remember getting better at that only once I had my first baby.. And the goal is not to forget that we are valuable enough to keep doing it for ourselves as well!! My BFF/Sister and I had a DOPE conversation last night!! We shared a lot of things that we are thinking about and working on in ourselves. One of the things I shared is that I’ve been working on LISTENING to myself, getting used to hearing the voice inside of ME! What is that instinct that pops up upon making a decision for yourself? I realize I’ve always had trouble with this. We live in such a noisy world and there are so many people we love and admire that have a million opinions and honestly, since the day we were born we were taught to please other people. To be a “nice” girl or a “good” boy but we are rarely taught to listen to ourselves. To cultivate our inner voice and to be secure in what the outcome of what that will bring without approval or validation. So, I’ve been challenging myself to only “go with the gut” —you KNOW what you feel and what you need. U KNOW it!!! How many times have you known you didn’t want to do something and talked yourself into doing it for one reason or another only to find out that after you did it you wished you hadn’t and you’re kicking yourself for not listening to yourself in the first place!!??? Oh man! I have been there tooooo many times!! So that’s why I’m encouraging myself to just listen to my first instinct and trust that it leads me where I need to go and not second guess it or doubt it. It’s hard, I don’t always do it. But when I DO, I feel a power in me and a pride in me that gets stronger. I love this pic cause it reflects this. All these voices, opinions and people outside of us and around us filling our heads but I’m choosing to stand strong in the middle of my instinct. Go with the gut! Do u feel me on this? Bronze piano tho!!!!!??? 👀 👀 👀 My first piano looked nothing like this. It was an old brown wood player piano. I imagined it as it played by itself sometime in the 1920’s. I practiced for hours on that thing, Bach, Satie, Marian Mcpartland, Oscar Peterson, Mozart, Mendelssohn etc. I would be so frustrated having to learn these complex parts while everyone else was outside playing, the echos of friends having fun. But I realize that those classical pieces are some of the most important part of my life and my sound And because I learned to play I’ve never had to depend on anyone to create my music. I’m always grateful for that gift And No one can ever take that from me!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🎹 🎹 I’m not sure what this all has to do with the picture I posted but you get me 🤣🤣🤣

This stopped me in my tracks. As the mommy of boys I’m always confronted with this silly standard we put on boys to be “tough” - to be “hard” - to not cry- to not express their true feelings and emotions. It’s devastating! We encourage girls to be creative - to be colorful - to be expressive. But with boys we give them these rules about how being a man means being emotionless. I teach my boys to honor their feelings - to use their words - to be able to actually express how they feel. It might sound crazy but I believe this is a way to change the world too. I pray we can “Viva La Vida” and stop perpetuating these traps!
