FACT. It is only appropriate to find hair and fossilized teeth in your sink if: A. you are a serial killer or B. you are a parent. (Edit: for those confused by the teeth, they came from the pumpkin patch where you can "mine" in the water and sand for either fossils or gem stones. Mom buys the bag, attendant dumps it in, and blam, your kid has found treasure. Both my kids chose fossils, so I have, like, ALOT of those teeth at my house.)

REAL TALK. Good morning. I think about this a LOT. I know from personal experience, when I’m feeling angry, I look around for things to be angry about, to justify my feeling that way. Obviously when you look for things to be angry about, you’re gonna find them. Same goes for the opposite though. When I’m feeling joyful, I seek out evidence to support this feeling, which just increases the intensity of the emotion. I’ve found the trick is to, when I’m feeling angry, seek out, or do things that bring me joy. I act how I want to feel, instead of acting how I already feel. Hope this helps. It’s time for another #FeaturedTeacherFriday! 📚🥰💪🏻Today’s teacher is Tej Carbone from Florida. Tej is both a teacher and a school social worker and I am so inspired by her attitude! Here’s her story: “Hi! I’m a 33 year old former licensed clinical social worker that felt the call to the classroom. I spent this past year studying and taking certification exams in order to obtain certification as an educator. I’m now certified as a school social worker, k-6 teacher and ESE. I will be teaching 2nd and 3rd grade in a small, special needs inclusion tuition-free charter school. Half of our students have documented disabilities, and a majority of our students are on free/reduced lunch. Our salaries are even less than that of our public school counterparts, yet we serve such a unique population. We have students ranging from profound intellectual disabilities all the way up to gifted, working together in the same class. This provides a unique set of challenges , but one which I am so excited to take on. As this is my first year teaching, I do not have any income with which to supply my classroom with necessities (my first check won’t come until late August), but I would love to create a calming space, with resources for ALL of my students to be successful. I will be teaching at UCP of Central Florida, Bailes campus. We are moving to a new building this year and expanding, so I’m getting a brand new classroom. This is exciting but also means I’m starting from scratch. This #FeaturedTeacherFriday 📚we are headed to Texas! Lanie’s attitude of compassion & inclusivity is amazing. Here’s her story: “I was born and raised in Austin, Texas! I have been teaching 4th grade for 5 years and I love every minute of it! My students are my world! They are loving, caring, compassionate, inquisitive, and sometimes hyper! As a class, we build a community so we can rely on one another. We build trust with restorative circles and hold each other accountable for our actions! I work with a very diverse population and most students come from low-income families. The schools I’ve worked at are Title 1 schools, meaning that they receive federally funded support. For some of my students, school is the only place they will receive a meal and have as a safe space with someone to trust. Throughout the year I personally purchase my students supplies, backpacks, coats, clothes, books and snacks. While my students are my family, I’m also very proud of the family my wife and I have built. I am out to my students and their parents, and while it’s been challenging at times, it’s worth it. It’s important to me that students have reassurance that it’s okay to be ‘different.’ This year I had a student tell me they were scared of life and who they were until they found out I was a lesbian. She said I made her realize that she wasn’t weird and that something wasn’t wrong with her. She said that reassurance saved her life. If I can save one child’s life, that’s enough for me. This next year I will be starting a GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) at Howard Norman Elementary in Hutto, TX for any and all that would like to join! I want to make sure students have a safe place to go to. All kids need to learn about acceptance, empathy, kindness. With the GSA and in my classroom, all of these things will be taught! So please meet Veronica! “My name is Veronica Landa and I have been working at Turtle Hook Middle School on Long Island, New York as a 6th and 7th grade Spanish teacher. These three years have truly been the greatest years of my life! I am very passionate about teaching a diverse group of students and strive to make a difference in their lives. Attending graduate school two nights a week has also helped me grow as a teacher and provide the best education for my students. My school is a Title 1 school. The population mainly consists of African American and Hispanic students. The majority of the students at THMS are economically disadvantaged and come from low-income families. Students are also given free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students struggle to afford books and other resources needed to succeed academically. Every day I strive to teach, guide, and support my students to become successful individuals. As a Spanish teacher, students are learning to engage in conversation and expand their knowledge about other cultures in the world. Creating a multicultural classroom teaches students to embrace and respect other cultures. I also incorporate a lot of technology games and videos in my classroom to motivate and engage my students throughout each lesson. This opportunity would help me incorporate books to expand my Spanish library and enhance students’ reading comprehension skills. My students will also be able to improve their speaking and writing skills and knowledge of the Hispanic culture. I’m so happy it’s #FeaturedTeacherFriday! #TGIFTF 📚🧠👍🏻 Meet Adam Benoit from Lincolnton, NC! Heres the message he sent me... “I have been a high school science teacher since 2005; I specialize in physics, but also teach chemistry, physical science, earth & environmental science, and pre-caclulus (one time). I love science, and I love teaching science, but I feel that my classroom is lacking in supplies that would go a long way to improve interest in STEM among my students. I have recently introduced 3D printing and computer programming into my classroom through a grant that was awarded to the school, and would love to incorporate it and other STEM related fields, to a greater extent. The lack of standard supplies and apparatus make it difficult to do so because the students need to learn the scientific and engineering skills within the curriculum in order to apply them to these other fields. When I first arrived at Lincolnton High School each department had a budget to buy supplies. A few years later, that was taken away due to state budget cuts and getting content specific supplies has become a hassle because there wasn't enough money in the budget to go around. This has resulted in myself, and most of my colleagues, supplying our classrooms ourselves. This is difficult for the classes I teach, and I am sure most science teachers would agree, because many of the supplies are consumable and expensive. Despite that, my colleagues and I have persisted to buy supplies with our own money to be sure that our students get a proper science education. Meet Yaskara Ortiz Ramirez! 📚🧠💪🏻 her wishlist will be in my bio and THANK U to everyone who reads and helps!! “I work in a Title 1 school in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, NY. To say I LOVE my school and the community we serve is an understatement! Our community is so diverse and so rich in history and is a beautiful mix of cultures. At the age of 29 after I was married and had already had my two boys (and my little girl was on the way) I decided to leave the corporate world, go back to school and get my Masters degree in Education. Remembering the difference my teachers made in my life when I came to this country at the age of nine pushed me to also get the Bilingual extension. I taught third grade for five years and am currently in my first year of teaching Kindergarten...boy are they energetic! I love my little Supers! Seeing them grow and having a hand in shaping them into good well rounded human beings fills my heart each and every day! My students are eager learners who are working towards being fully bilingual and bi-literate. In addition to all that, they are learning how to read! Recently our school lost our Magnet Grant. We are now a Magnet School without the Magnet money. Our Tech Lab, Smart Boards, and Library could use a lot of love and care AKA updating. Our classrooms, especially those that are Dual Language lack the proper resources such as updated classroom library books and computers/iPads. Every year (if we’re lucky) teachers receive a $200-$250 stipend to help offset what we spend to prepare our classrooms at the start of the school year...I spend that on pencils alone! I pour heart and soul (and many paychecks) into my (school) children while still making sure that my own children feel loved. It is a tough balance, but I can’t say that I could see myself doing anything else.”

It’s #FeaturedTeacherFriday!! Meet Brenna Frost, a 4th grade teacher at Elk Meadow Elementary in Bend, OR. Today also happens to be her last day of school, but she can store all the goodies from her wishlist safely until next year! 👍🏻 “I've been teaching at the elementary level for 13 years. I would describe myself as persistent and passionate about providing my students with a positive school experience each day. My school is a K-5, Title 1 school, meaning many of our families are working incredibly hard each day and are also in need. Approximately 50% of the students receive free/reduced-price lunch at our school. My passion for helping, celebrating, and honoring students with neurodiversities is very personal- My son is on the autism spectrum. He was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 7 years old. Being his mom makes me incredibly proud. Being his mom has made me a better teacher. He showed me that being different is a good thing. He showed me that kids like him have unique ways of thinking and that makes the world a better, more interesting place to be. Year after year I teach incredible, diverse students. Six languages are spoken at our school! I love my students and their unique minds! Honoring and embracing our differences, including neurological differences like autism, sensory processing disorder, and anxiety is key to the success of all young people. I truly believe that the world would be a boring place if our brains were all the same. Fridays are the best days because I get to feature an amazing teacher. Today’s #FeaturedTeacherFriday is Lindsey Henry, who teaches science at the STEAM lab at Tahoe Valley Elementary School in CA. Here’s her story: “My door is always open for kids to come and just be. With the daily pressures of life the kids in my school know they can trust Mrs. Henry to listen to them & love on them no matter what. Tahoe Valley has a student population of 75% free & reduced lunch. Out of 397 students 54 of them are McKinney Vento kiddos. This means they do not have a stable living environment & sometimes are moving around monthly or even weekly. 30% of our school population are English Language learners. Our school science program has been trying to get off the ground for some time now & finally, we have gained the STEAM (pun intended) necessary to incorporate a science program at each of our 4 elementary schools in our small district. Some schools have more than enough others schools have hardly anything. Our school unfortunately, is one that has less. When it come to the science lab my dream is to allow my students to freely discover why science is so cool! I’d love to see my kiddos be able to play with items that most of them wouldn’t be able to experience otherwise. I want my kids to feel comfortable to learn without shame of making mistakes. In my room mistakes are welcome. I want my kids to be able to have a FAIL: First Attempt In Learning! That way they can feel confident to KEEP trying & to stay curious. Unfortunately, our science lab lacks in tangible tools for the kids to use for discovery. My wishlist has some simple things that will allow for uninhibited learning! This #FeaturedTeacherFriday we’re gonna get musical with a band teacher from Warren, MI. Meet Adam Busuttil! (😘 to Michigan!) “I have been teaching band at Fitzgerald High School, a Title 1 school, for thirteen years. Our program has some amazing dedicated band students. They work hard day in and day out many times on broken or patched together instruments. The program consists of a 9th grade band, symphony band, marching band, and an audition based band called Wind Ensemble, and an after school voluntary Jazz Band we started this year. These students have had a tough year and I am doing everything to make it a positive one for them. They never ask for much and are always very courteous, kind, humble, and grateful for in everything they do and or receive. I am extremely proud of their work and try to help them in anyway I can. I have gotten to know many amazing students and community members since starting at Fitzgerald in 2005. I started teaching because I have always enjoyed working with kids. I am passionate about sharing how exciting music can be, and teaching kids to be more than to just be consumers of music. It’s important to me that students leave my classroom not only with a musical background, but also the ability to think critically about the world around them while also having a better understanding of the arts. One thing I love about my job is the opportunity to shape individuals and give my students skills they can take beyond the classroom for a lifetime of success. Food is a big piece of this – kids can’t learn if they’re hungry. I know food is just as important to my students’ ability to learn as pencils and notebooks. The last six of those have been with my partner in teaching, Holly Williams (who has been a Kindergarten teacher for 30 years!) at Arsenal Elementary School. Arsenal is an ESL centered school, which means many of our students are learning English along with everything else that is important in Kindergarten. Our school has students from 18 different countries, including some refugees and recent immigrants. In our two classrooms alone, we have children speaking 7 different native languages. We love the diversity within our school, but also recognize that this can present challenges many other classrooms may not face. Teaching in this school requires much more than following a standard curriculum. Our biggest struggle is having the resources to let our students not only learn, but learn through play! Heres a program I LOVE: Repost: @pawsitivechangeprogram: (Great work, @zachskow!!) 3 million homeless pets die every year inside America’s shelters. While this is happening, 3 million men, women and kids are incarcerated in America every year. It is my deepest confidence that these statistics can work to cancel one another out. Incarcerated inmate/trainers can save countless lives, while giving themselves a legitimate path to employment when they are released. The pet industry is a 90 billion follow juggernaut, with ample opportunity for our student inmates. In fact, the industry is scrambling to fill a training gap, created by a lack of qualified, experienced trainers. By the time many of our students are released, they will have had thousands of hours one on one experience and hundreds of hours shadowing and directly learning from industry professionals. Additionally, the majority of our students released from prison have joined the pet services and rescue community as a career! At any given time, we have up to 40 dogs living inside of State Prisons and juvenile halls in California. 40 lives which may otherwise have been lost needlessly. In turn, these men and women are gaining much needed confidence and skills to ensure they don’t end up a recidivism statistic. Recidivism is at 80% because former inmates don’t have a path to employment. This program is that path! Here’s her story: “My name is Katrina Morris and I teach in a very rural school in Idaho, Timberline Elementary. Our school serves two towns in Idaho - Pierce and Weippe. We are a K-12 school with about 200 kids and we are a Title 1 school. I currently have 16 students in my 4th grade class. I love that in our small school the kids taken care of like family. It was a dream of mine to be a teacher from a very young age. I loved to play teacher as a young child and continue to really like my job. There is never a dull moment in teaching! The day flies by. Living wage jobs are hard to come by in our community and that often shows in our classroom population. I battle many of the effects from poverty and childhood ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences) everyday. However, we (teachers and students) do our best each day! One of the most important things to me in my classroom is to develop positive relationships with my students. I am a strong believer that positive relationships foster learning. I love to share my passion for reading, technology, math and history with my students but most of all I hope they leave my class being a better person! Oh yeah, it’s #FeaturedTeacherFriday! Reading the comments and seeing the love you all share with these teachers each week is THE BEST. Today, meet Kristen Williamson from Omaha, Nebraska. “I’m a 5th grade teacher in a Title 1 School, in Omaha, Nebraska. My class has 23 students (7 boys and 16 girls). In my classroom alone, there are 13 different languages and dialects spoken. I have students from Sudan, Kenya, Cuba, Guatemala, and Mexico. And yes, the most beautiful part of my classroom is the diversity within my students. Is this my dream job? 100% yes. I love every single day of work. The group of students I’m currently working with have given me the most rewarding year of teaching I've ever had. I adore every child in my classroom. Over these past 4 years I have worked really hard to build a great classroom library. Every month, I use part of my paycheck to buy more books for my students. I am not able to build my classroom library as quickly as I wish I could, but I try my best. I’ve spent a lot of time recently looking through my classroom library. It is lacking in so many areas. The area of my room I was once so proud of, is now my biggest mission. My kids deserve books with characters of all races. My kids deserve books with characters who celebrate holidays other than Christian holidays. My kids deserve books that discuss immigration, gay pride, science, technology, refugee journeys, and so many other things. My kids deserve the most amazing classroom library. I want to have a classroom library that meets the interests of EVERY student… and right now, that just isn’t happening. Oh yeah, it’s #FeaturedTeacherFriday #TGIFTF This week I’m featuring a COUPLE, Amy and Jason Oetjens. Two teachers in one day? Heck, yes. (Oh, and they’re from Michigan.) Here’s what Amy shared with me: “My husband and I both work in a rural school in Watervliet on the west side of Michigan just minutes from Lake Michigan. Our district is surrounded by fruit farms (apple, peaches, blueberries, and vineyards). The community is small but definitely a close knit type of community that comes together when a family is in need. We both teach at Watervliet Middle School, a Title 1 school, that has about 352 students in which 70% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My husband, Jason, is a 7th grade Social Studies teacher and I am a 6th grade Science teacher. We both have similar teaching styles where we believe students learn by doing or making. My husband is a very charismatic teacher who builds healthy relationships with his students through stories that bring history alive for his students. Many have said that his class is the reason they come to school every day because they know they not only have fun learning but that they are respected in his class. Many of the students we teach are in tough living situations and to know that someone cares for them is very important in the turmoil they live in. Last week I got to do something really amazing. I visited @pawsitivechangeprogram’s first ever Juvenile Justice program & met with the girls, the trainers, and their pups. I’ve followed this program for ages, but to see it firsthand was really something. In adult prisons, @pawsitivechangeprogram pairs inmates with rescue dogs, and the humans train the animals to be trusting, communicative, and learn skills that will serve them outside the facility walls. (And the animals train their humans to be emotionally open, collaborative, and learn skills that will serve them outside the facility walls.) It’s drastically reduced recidivism and violence, and this is their first juvenile program. The girls learn how to train their dogs, communicate with each other, and share their emotions and experiences. I sat with them, shared some of my own stories, and was completely blown away by the girls’ intelligence and dedication to improving themselves and helping their dogs. He just kept staring at me, asking If I knew when the food lady be around around...Not exactly a shot caller....Secondly, how am I supposed to hurt anyone when my adult teeth aren’t even in I’m paralyzed from the waist down...? So, I did the only logical thing I could think of which was poop myself and hope everyone stayed away. That failed too. To keep them tuned in with today’s world I use a lot of technology in my lessons. I have 2 desktops to utilize for a class of 25. With a few portable computers students will be able to conduct independent or group research projects without having to stand around a single desktop computer. I teach in Harlem/Hamilton Heights. It's a community that has changed a lot in the past couple of years - there are families that have lived here for multiple generations, there are families that have just moved from more expensive parts of the city, and there are families who have just step foot into the United States, looking to set down their roots. My school, PS 153, has seen the demographic changes first hand. We're a Title 1 school - which means the majority of our students are on reduced or free lunch. We have a staff that is full of ideas - but we don't always have the means. We have a variety of new initiatives at our school with the intention to expose our students to activities they might not regularly see. It’s my favorite day of the week- #FeaturedTeacherFriday! 📚❤️ Meet Luis Rincones, a 9th & 10th grade Geometry teacher at Port Isabel High School (Title 1) in Port Isabel, TX! "I left the banking industry after twelve years to be a teacher because teaching was the part of my job I enjoyed the most. I did presentations on financial responsibility to local schools and helped my wife, an English teacher, throughout the year decorating her classroom, grading, and looking and purchasing resources. I was fortunate to be welcomed into the Port Isabel High School family and have really enjoyed my first year here. I started a chess club, coach UIL academics, and—most recently—an eSports team to compete against other high schools around the country. We’re the first eSports team in our area. This district falls under Texas's Chapter 41 Wealth Equalization Law which means the state collects half the property taxes collected by the city. This is really tough for the school and the district because 80% of the student population falls under Economically Disadvantaged and 92% of the students are minorities. My class roster consists of 160 students and includes students from a variety of backgrounds and needs like ESL, Special Ed, 504, and others. We are a small school and there is a large group of students that do not fall into the arts or athletics groups. I felt there was something needed to reach them and gaming is one thing many teenagers do. I started an eSports team and they start on Tuesday. We're using the school computers at the game's minimum setting and they seem to work ok. The headsets will be for them to communicate. Our school also uses Summit Learning, which is a blended pedagogy of teacher instruction and self paced math models, a sort of collegiate model like Blackboard. For many students, the meals they eat at our school are their only source of food and the fee waivers are their only opportunity at participating in sports or taking tests like the ACT/SAT. Something to know about me: I absolutely love to teach. I come from a long line of teachers in my family. I love seeing my students grow in their love for reading and become stronger writers. Though we read a lot of incredible books, all of them are filled with predominantly white characters. Our school population is about 70% Hispanic and 15% African American. So, I would love to be able to stock my library with literature that is culturally diverse, and more relatable to what these teens are dealing with: societal pressures, falling in love (and the subsequent heartbreak), friendships and those trials, being LGBTQ, growing up in poverty and violence, navigating the awkward years that are being a teen. I scour through Goodwill and go to library sales to help get books for my students, but a lot of contemporary fiction is just beyond my budget. I have a lot of students who will be the first in their family to either graduate and/or go to college, and it’s an honor to empower and encourage them on that journey. @jackietohn is by far my loudest friend. She is also my most loyal, most creative, and most hilarious one. We met over 15 yrs ago doing black box theater in L.A. and we promptly fell in love. I cannot tell you how many times we have laughed until we peed making up nicknames for dogs we see on the street, or lip reading conversations from a distance between norm-core individuals on the hiking trail. They dont make em like @jackietohn very often. So when you find one, you gotta hold on tight. @jackietohn ia also a fiercely talented musician. And her new project, @powerfoxmusic is delicious. Pls check it out. Her version of Maniac will definitely be on repeat in my house for a while. Photo by @kouryangelo and glam by the incomparable @courthart1. ***jackie and I also once came across a 60 yr old man named Morty lying on the Griffith park hiking trail stoned out of his mind with a broken elbow. We helped him call his buddy and get to the hospital, but this took us a while due to the fact that Morty was flying higher than a giraffes ass and could barely operate his phone. This story is neither here nor there, but it was an incredibly entertaining experience.

I was out shopping in the local bazaar, a place we had been a hundred times before. It was one of the kids’ favorite things to do on the weekend. We were walking from the toy section across the street to the vegetable stands and all the sudden a riot broke out in the square where we were standing. I ran into the alley away from the crowd and the police shooting tear gas dragging the kids with me to try and be anywhere else, somewhere safe for my kids. . We ran by the onion and pumpkin stand and the men behind the counter called us into their shop and shuttered the doors to keep out the gas. The kids were shaking, terrified, and had no idea what was going on. The shutters were pinging on the outside around us. But inside this little market booth with aluminum doors drawn shut, these kind strangers were offering candy and sugar-filled tea to calm our nerves, protecting both our bodies and our hearts from harm. . About an hour later, they opened the shutters in the silence and went out to check if it was safe. I told them my car was across the street and they quickly recommended that I leave the car and take a taxi from the back side of the bazaar. Then they left their stall to see us safely to the taxi. . In every time of fear or attack that I have experienced while living in one of the most war-torn countries of my lifetime, a stranger has been there to care, console, and provide cover. My children have always been of their utmost concern. . So today, I woke up to images of this mom just looking for safety for her little ones and my heart broke. I wish she could be met with welcome, shutters closing out the dark and sweet tea to calm her nerves. I wish she could say to her babies, “look how nice everyone is here, look how they protect us even though they don’t know us.” I wish she could just have someone come alongside her and ask what she needs

It’s been just 2 weeks since another gunman slaughtered 11 senior citizens at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. Just this past week 12 people were gunned down in a bar in CA. 300 more mass shootings have happened this year. 300. And the primary response for how we stop these shootings continues to be to be “good guys w/guns” intervening & stopping the bad guys. Except the CA shooter killed the good guy w/a gun, a veteran cop, who bravely entered the bar to save those under attack. And now on Sun morn, w/the threat of another mass shooting underway, yet another good guy w/a gun was shot & killed–this time by police. He was black. 26 yr old Jemel Roberson of Chicago, was a beloved church musician who played drums & keyboard for churches all over the city. Like most local church musicians, he had another job to help pay the bills. He worked as an armed security guard for clubs & bars. W/the mass shooting in the bar in Thousand Oaks, CA just days earlier, security guards across the country in similar venues were on high alert. At 4AM on Sunday morn, at Manny’s Blue Room Bar in the small town of Robbins, Illinois, Jemel Roberson was forced to ask a group of drunk men to leave the bar. Suddenly, according to witnesses, one of the men came back with a gun into the bar and opened fire. Enter the good guy with a gun. Jemel Roberson bravely entered the fray, returned fire, then chased a man down outside, & held him down until police arrived. Family & friends say that he hoped to become a police officer himself one day. Right now we should be hearing abt Jemel Roberson the hero, refused to allow people to harmed on his watch, & bravely brought a gunman to justice. But this is America. & what we are all seeing is that being a “good guy with a gun,” while black, might get u killed black, might get u killed by ppl who simply cannot imagine u are there to help. I am an ESOL (English as a Second Language) high school teacher in Falls Church, VA. I teach SIFE (Students with Interrupted Formal Education) Numeracy. All of my students have zero (yes—this is real) to just a few years of formal schooling. Because of their age—they are placed in high school. Many of my students do not only have limited English skills but they have also faced serious trauma on their journey to the United States. When a person has not attended school for many years— it’s difficult for them to engage, adapt to their new environment. I need all types of simple resources to help them. Their current level of education will not define their future. It truly takes a community who believes in them to support them and help them move forward. We read simple books. We are learning Kindergarten math. Everything is new to my group of students. I try very hard to create a safe and inviting classroom. In this day and age, it’s an injustice to be 15 years old and not have had access to school in your life. Next up for #10featuredteachers Round 2 is Angie, a first grade teacher from Topeka, Kansas, who was nominated by her daughter in law, Dani! “ I decided to become a teacher after earning my BS in Business and working 17 years in Corporate America. I wanted to give back because I felt I had been blessed. It took an additional 3 years of undergrad courses to become an elementary education teacher. I did this while going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments after being diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer. I teach in a title 1 school in an inner-city district. Many of my students are on free and reduced lunch. For the past 11 years I have taught in the poorest two schools in our district. I co-wrote a grant that earned our school funding for an after-school program. I coordinated that program for four years which also included a summer program. I completed the Reading Recovery Program approximately 4 years ago and use that training to specialize in teaching struggling readers. I currently teach first grade and love teaching my students to read. Many of my students come from homes where parents are struggling to make ends meet. They come to school without the necessities. I help provide school supplies, breakfasts, snacks, and incentives for my treasure chest, not to mention classroom decorations, Halloween and holiday treats and gifts for my students. Teaching is my passion and I believe it is a calling. I teach in a dual language program where half of our day is taught in English and half in Spanish. Some of my students come from English-speaking families and some come from Spanish-speaking families. A few are even recent immigrants to this country from places like Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, including one little boy who just moved here last week from Mexico. As an immigrant to this country myself, I know the struggle that students can have when acclimating to not only a new home, but also to a new language. I was 5 when my parents brought me to this country, and I had to go to kindergarten without knowing a word of English. I love that I teach in a program that understands that speaking another language is not a handicap, but a gift. Learning in both English and Spanish allows my students to develop not only an appreciation, but also a love of cultures and people different from them, while still honoring where they come from. While I love having the opportunity to teach my students in two languages, there are some challenges. Our school library has only 4 shelves of books in Spanish, which clearly is not enough to provide 300 dual language students with enough engaging reading material at their individual reading levels for an entire school year. We have no class sets of novels for 5th graders and no nonfiction books in Spanish. I would love to put engaging, thought-provoking Spanish literature into the hands of my students. I have been blessed enough to work with amazing, thoughtful, smart high schoolers, but what they honestly need most is books. Many of my high schoolers have given up on reading and chalked it up to "boring" or just something they don't see a lot of value in. I am trying to change that by bringing back daily, routine, independent reading for my kids. So, the thing that my room needs most is books that they actually *want* to read. Books are expensive and I've been able to build a decent classroom library, but it definitely isn't serving every interest and it adds up very quickly as I try to piece it together when I have a little extra cash. And sometimes when I don't necessarily have extra cash--last year I spent $40 on the rest of a series on a tight budget week because one of my most reluctant readers finished the first book (the only book he had read to completion in at least 7 years) and had asked if I had the next one. He was so enthusiastic about it that I just couldn't let him down. So, my classroom wishlist is just that: Books my kids will enjoy, have asked for, represent their backgrounds, and give them voices. I am currently also in graduate school while teaching full time and enjoying my first pregnancy. I am working on my masters degree in behavior intervention to better be able to serve my students. In schools the focus is academics but with my students I know that until we can help them with their behavior and emotional struggles that academic growth will be hard to find. I want to give my students a more equipped room where they can take a break and find their calm. The president has just signed an executive order reversing his own policy of mass family separation at the border. This executive order was signed because OF YOU. This administration took a bet that America had no more unifying non-negotiables – that there was nothing we wouldn’t tolerate – that we wouldn’t care enough to keep fighting. They lost that bet. We cared enough. When it came to the babies we, the people, came together and said: NOT THIS. We need to take a moment to acknowledge your victory. Okay that moment is over. Because this remains a national crisis and atrocity. This order does not change the President’s zero-tolerance regime. Every unauthorized border crossing (even those who may be seeking asylum legally) will continue to be treated as a federal crime. Families may be detained by (in for-profit facilities) indefinitely while the adults face federal prosecution. IT DOES NOTHING WITH RESPECT TO THE THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN ALREADY FORCIBLY REMOVED FROM THEIR FAMILIES through this barbaric policy. NOTHING ABOUT THEM. We have learned today that children have been flown all over the country – hundreds of miles from their parents, and authorities have said there is a high probability that many will never be reunited. We learned today that several of the FOR-PROFIT companies that house unaccompanied children have histories of sexual misconduct and other abuse. ORPHANED & ABUSED BY OUR GOVERNMENT. TOGETHER RISING WILL NOT REST UNTIL THESE CHILDREN ARE BACK IN THEIR PARENTS’ ARMS. We will not forget about these thousands of terrified children. We will reunify these families. Every boots on the ground organization with which are in daily contact tells us this: These babies need advocates to help get them reunified with their families. I'm releasing an EP of covers next week entitled "McGuire's Motel," and to celebrate I'll be posting as many covers as I possibly can over the next 7 days, some from the new release and some just because. •••••••••••••••••••••• This one is an old Blues Folk standard of unknown origin called "Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor." I first fell in love with Mississippi John Hurt's rendition, but many greats have covered it, from Dylan to Gillian Welch to Louis Armstrong. •••••••••••••••••••••• its kind of an obscure thought, but the act of someone fashioning you a simple place to sleep--especially on the floor for some reason--has always felt like one of the kindest and most comforting acts a person can do, particularly during more difficult times of fatigue, sadness, etc. They're essentially tucking you in, and I don't think any of us ever completely loses the connection with that. The unapologetic aimlessness of this character, and shamelessness in the way he asks for a handout fills me with pity and just sorta gets me every time. The line "when I'm broke and got nowhere to go" often sounds like "when I'm broken, got nowhere to go.." which just further intensifies the feelings in it. After giving the audition grind/consistent ramen diet (am I right??) its fair shot in the early aughts, Krinsten left the acting game, fearing Hollywood wouldn't take her seriously because of the similarity between her name and that of Kristen Bell, a more widely known competitor who was advancing in the ranks at the time. Blessings in disguise though, I say. If not for her departure from that shit show, she would've never found her rhythm on the Hackensack carpet cleaning scene, where she handles the entire account at Goir Sushi and interior design. Yup, she, her husband Dan, and her two kids, Sam and Neft are flying high, and she hasn't once looked back.
