"Shrill: Notes From a Loud Woman" by Lindy West @TheLindyWest # Lovvvvveeedddd, loved, loved, loved this book!!! West is a truly remarkable writer and her stories are beautifully poignant while dosed with her incredibly sharp wit.  I found myself laughing out loud multiple times while reading it, pausing to appreciate her ability to bring humor to some really deep topics.  Check out her show as well, by the same name, on Hulu!  # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads (link in bio) #mcgreads

We were not raised in a culture of consent, let alone enthusiastic consent (Google the term is you’re unfamiliar). Most of us were not raised learning to value body autonomy and most of us are woefully inept at talking about sex in a real nuanced way. As men, we have been taught that we should always be confident and be knowledgeable about sex...which often goes against how we can ever create a culture of consent and normalize it in our relationships. As a man, I will attest that using a model of enthusiastic consent as we approach new levels of physical intimacy can feel clunky at first, but only because we were never taught it and rarely ever hear about it. We need to have the courage to lean into our discomfort and feelings of vulnerability...it is the only way to create a world and relationships where we are truly honoring other people’s bodily autonomy. We must resist our conditioning and create a new way. Not to mention, being able to have conversations about our wants, needs, and boundaries and learning to honor other people’s, is essential to creating a world of equity and justice. # Repost from @givingthetalk - “How do you ask for consent? . Because at the end of the day, whomever you’re with should be excited and enthusiastic about saying Yes! . Asking for consent isn’t unsexy and doesn’t have to be awkward. We simply need more examples that model this type of exchange and that demonstrate direct respectful communication in order to normalize it. Asking for consent can be flirtatious, sexy, funny, silly, kind, loving, not just formal and stilted. Find your own way to communicate your desires and to check in with your partner(s) about their comfort, desires and boundaries. . 📷 @givingthetalk . #normalizeconsent #expectconsent #consentissexy #consentisrespectful #givingthetalk #allthetalks #sexed #sexeducation #sexualhealth #reproductivejustice #communication #healthyrelationships #consent #sexualhealth #pleasureispower “

@weinspirejustice produced this powerful campaign calling for action to end white supremacy. “For, if they take you in the morning, they will be coming for us that night.” The legendary James Baldwin understood that an attack on one community is an attack on ALL communities. We cannot deny that the recent domestic terrorism in Texas and Ohio and large-scale ICE raids in Mississippi stem from white supremacy and should be seen as an attack on this country as a whole. Now is not the time to be silent or numb. Join @weinspirejustice and take action to #EndWhiteSupremacy in all of its manifestations. "The Cross of Redemption: Uncollected Writings" by James Baldwin # Baldwin's birthday was August 2nd.  His magnificent writing is unfortunately just as relevant as it was when he was alive.  This book is a collection of essays, reviews, and other writings, that give insight into the mastery of his writing and also his ability to name white supremacy...and how it is perpetuated and upheld by "well meaning" and liberal white people.  What often sticks out to me, as a white man who believes that one of the main purposes in my life is to engage other white people in anti-racism, is his ability to name the problem. # I believe that overwhelmingly, white people who denounce racism in its most extreme and obvious forms, refuse to look inward in a deep way.  We refuse to learn about and recognize the white supremacy in ourselves and in our own liberal communities.  And as a result, we give ourselves credit for not being White Supremacists, without actually dealing with the root causes of of the issue.  We overwhelmingly refuse to invest in anti-racism as a life practice and understand that this is our responsibility.  We love to talk about Trump, but we are severely lacking in ability to understand *ourselves*. And as a result, the whole country continues to be destroyed by racism. White people, we must summon the courage to truly look within. (Thx for the book @amberconey ) # "I am tired not only of being told to wait, but of people's saying, 'What should I do?' They mean, 'What do I do about the Negro problem; 'What should I do for you?' There is nothing you can do for me.  There is nothing you can do for Negroes. It must be done for you. One is not attempting to save twenty-two million people.  One is attempting to save an entire country, and that means and entire civilization, and the price for that is high.  The price for that is to understand oneself...It is time to ask very hard questions an to take very rude positions.  And no matter what the price.  It is time, fo

“White terroristic violence is the foundation of how this country came into being.” When we use mental illness as the scapegoat for white nationalist acts, we divert attention from the real culprit and from the action that needs to be taken to stop white supremacy in its tracks. (Not to mention, access to mental health resources hasn’t improved so we’re further stigmatizing this community with nothing to show for it) We have to stop the radicalization of white people in this country. Period. • REPOST @sonyareneetaylor: For the Last Damn Time: White supremacy is NOT a Mental Illness and Here is Why that Ableist Narrative is WRONG! "it is ablest. it is a function of a way to scapegoat neurodivergency. So that we don't have to deal with the fact that we have a murderous society in America built on domination and violence and power-over and power-over happens at the state level. Power-over happens at the inception and creation of the nation state and then funnels down into the individual identities of its inhabitants."

To read the full article, Google: "Scientific American Dr. Linda Bacon." @amee_rd @lindobacon For more info on Health At Every Size #HAES , read Dr. Linda Bacon's book by the same name and/or their book "Body Respect"). # This article is specifically about the way that body fat and health are wrongly equated with one another. And the way that the myriad of incorrect beliefs about body fat in our culture harms everyone (and especially fat people) and actually *causes* health issues. Because the fatphobic cultural beliefs around fatness run so deep, it will likely take some time to truly understand what this article is saying, and where you may be projecting your own deeply held beliefs. I encourage you to sit with it and refer back to it if necessary. And to read the books mentioned above if you truly want to understand this issue...and we all should. # This should not need to be said, but I believe that it is necessary to state plainly. While this article is about health and in some ways how to achieve better health, no person deserves to be treated in a bigoted, dehumanizing way. No matter how "healthy" or fat they are or not. To argue that they do, is simply a justification that is based in anti-fatness. To argue that upholding the stigma of anti-fatness is somehow of a benefit to *anyone*, is also to uphold bigotry. And this is also true for the "well-intentioned" ways that we perpetuate these beliefs. # And just because you wouldn't say that you "hate fat people," that doesn't mean that you haven't internalized many notions of fatphobia. Just because we may say that we don't "hate people of color," doesn't absolve us of the fact that we live in a culture where white supremacy is the norm and must be unlearned. Just bc a man may say he “doesn’t hate women," doesn't mean that he’s free from sexist beliefs and upholding sexism. Like any system of oppression, anti-fatness runs incredibly deep and requires conscious unlearning, self-examination, and acti

"Color Of Violence: The INCITE! Anthology" edited by INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence # This may not be a beginner's book...But for those with a solid foundation in feminism, I feel that it offers really important perspectives from a wide range of people of different identities and from different communities. This anthology is definitely intersectionality in action, uplifting the struggles of women and trans people of color and broadening the framework of what we are up against in the fight for liberation of all people. # For those that may be interested in feminism but not necessarily aware of the impact of imperialism, capitalism, and colonialism on how we prevent violence against women, this book will offer great insight. I definitely came away with knowledge that I didn't have before. # CW: "The violence of nuclearization and militarization has included nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands, where more than sixty bombs have been detonated. We must all remember that the world's first hydrogen bomb was tested on Bikini Island. The force of this weapon of desruction was one thousand times stronger than the Hiroshima bomb. Marshall Islanders were used as guinea pigs to test the effects of contamination. They were not told of the bomb's effects nor were they removed before testing. Predictably, cancer is now widespread among the Marshallese. They have one of the highest rates of severely deformed children, including "jellyfish babies" who have no heads, arms, legs, or human shape...Such babies are not only born on islands declared radioactive by the Americans, but on all atolls and five major islands in the Marshall's archipelago." # "Attacks on our sexual and reproductive systems are among the most pervasive types of medical violence against women of color. From the 1930s to the 1960s, close to one half of Puerto Rican women of childbearing age were sterilized without their informed consent...while at the same time multinational corporations had re

Words can't express how grateful I am to have been a part of the iconic and trailblazing 'Orange Is The New Black' for a little over two seasons. I can't believe how time has flown...it feels like just yesterday when I got the call that I had booked a possibly recurring five line role on a Netflix streaming series. I still remember asking my personal training client to hold on a moment while I answered the call. I remember being unsure of how excited I "should be" given the amount of unknowns with what I was walking into. This was before Netflix became the platform that it currently is, and I was still grateful for what I thought was likely a small role on a web-series that could have been two episodes for all I knew. As it turns out, it was one of the biggest hit shows on what became one of the most forward-thinking platforms of storytelling. And it was the opportunity to perform in service of brilliant and nuanced writing. # I am so proud of the stories that we got to tell, the people that gained amplification from the platform, and the culture shifting that took place with the power of storytelling. To be a part of something so unique and groundbreaking, especially for my first real role on a television show, is beyond anything that I ever could have dreamed of. And the fans...oh boy...I'm just so damn grateful for every one of you. Who poured your heart into the characters and the brilliant writing, whose passionate support made all of this possible. It's sad that the show is coming to an end, and at the same time, I am so thrilled to see what all of the beautiful creatives who have been a part of this show will do next. # Friday, July 26th marks the release of the 7th and final season of OITNB. Incredibly, Monday of this same week, I began filming my 6th and final season of 'How to Get Away With Murder' as well. I feel so fortunate, and filled with gratitude, thinking of all that is possible for the future. For all of the art that will continue to

I’m so unbelievably grateful to have been a part of this important show. I can’t believe we are coming up on our 6th and final season. The cast, the crew, the writers, and our creator @petenowalk have all worked so hard and poured their hearts and talents into creating #HTGAWM and making it something that I am so proud to be a part of. The storylines pushing for social change and the increasingly political and progressive nature of the show is something that I am eternally grateful for. And to all the fans out there...this wouldn’t have been possible without you. Thank you so much for allowing my dreams to be possible. I am excited to have one more season to play Asher Millstone, and give it my all. I hope to make you LOL and feel the feels. I’m finding it hard to express all that needs to be expressed, partly as I’m pressed for time now and just wanted to get this news out ASAP. Will write more later. :) Love you all! ❤️❤️❤️

This June, I had the honor of working with @weinspirejustice on curating a symposium exploring gender and sexuality for @playboy. The five pieces were written by activists, foremost thinkers, storytellers, and trailblazers - ensuring that directly impacted voices are centered in conversations that all of America should be having. We got real about collective liberation, fat black girls, nontoxic masculinity, intersectionality, and the invisibilization of male survivors. Literally, bringing our stories into the fold! Big thanks to @jlovecalderon @freckledwhileblack and the @weinspirejustice family for making this all possible! "You Have The Right To Remain Fat" by Virgie Tovar ( @virgietovar ) # Wheeeeeeewwwww. This is a tiny book but it packs such a huge punch. Every sentence is a gem and every page a manifesto that breaks down fatphobia and other intersecting forms of oppression with precision. I frequently found myself nodding my head (perhaps too aggressively) as I read along, and excitedly sharing excerpts with my friends. This will definitely be one of my go-to books to recommend for people interested in understanding anti-fatness and how it is a necessary part of social justice. Just read a few of the pages and you can see why for yourself. I think it’s also an important read for people that are interested in body positivity whose bodies may not be the *most* marginalized. As with any other movement for social justice, those of us with more privilege need to be intentional with our practice of allyship. Learning about how we have privilege, even when we are working through our own struggles with body image, is essential to making sure that the most marginalized are not left behind. As this has been the case with many social justice movements over the course of history. ❤️ # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads (link in bio) #McGReads

Repost from @munroebergdorf from yesterday, 50th anniversary of #Stonewall - “If you are anti-trans or anti-sex work then you do not understand the roots of queer #pride. The most marginalized members of our community continue to be on the front lines worldwide, fighting to exist in a world that has only accepted *some* of our community. Whilst pride is about "love". It's also about highlighing the stuff that isn't as palatable to the cis straight white masses... It's about the high numbers of young queer people of colour experiencing homelessness in the UK after being kicked out of their homes. It's about black trans women being raped and/or murdered by the same men who want to have sex with us (rest in peace #NaomiHersi). It's about UK media outlets employing anti-trans activists to print bigoted misinformation on trans people to incite intentional public hatred. It's about the fact that more than one in four (27 per cent) of trans young people in the UK have attempted to commit suicide and nine in ten (89 percent) have thought about it. 72 per cent of trans people have self-harmed at least once. We've come so far in 50 years and have so much further to go, but in order to progress we need to be amplifying the voices of the most marginalized. Not glossing over everything with a *love is love* slogan. Pride was started by transgender women of colour, black butch lesbians and queer sex workers. Failure to centre them within the modern day pride movement is a failure for us all. For more UK trans statistics visit @stonewalluk. “

Repost from @beauty_redefined seen on @fyeahmfabello ‘s stories- “It is hard to escape people glorifying weight loss with before/after posts, even in the world of body positivity. This is an issue because it perpetuates the popular diet culture idea that smaller is always better, healthier and happier. ✖️Actions speak louder than words, and on IG, photos speak soooo much louder than captions. Yes, maybe she lost weight after kicking bad habits or breaking through shame to enjoy physical activity. Yay! But if the "progress" or "transformation" shown is one where her body became smaller, that post -at its core- is not celebrating happy lifestyle changes, it is celebrating exactly what the image shows: weight loss. It is reinforcing the inescapable message that health equals thinness, and that body love leads to (and maybe even requires) body shrinking. ✖️Weight loss is fine. Showing it online is fine. But we've gotta be straight about it and realize the consequences of posting those images. If you want to show off your new size, receive validation, or sell your weight loss plan, that's fine, but don't co-opt #bodypositivity rhetoric to do it. If you are going to promote body acceptance and the message that our bodies are OK at any size, you can't *also* post and celebrate before-and-after weight loss pics. We have to learn to separate our ideas about our worth and health from cultural ideals that thinner is better. ✖️Why? Because research shows many major health and fitness improvements DO NOT result in weight loss. And because research shows most women measure their health "success" in terms of weight loss, and when doesn't happen, we often give up entirely or go to extremes that result in eating disorders, overexercise and shame. Even when weight loss does occur, 95%+ of people will gain it back and more within 5 yrs, so these posts are going to be painful for future you, too! ✖️We have to challenge the value system that tells us smaller is always better. I moved away from my home of NYC around 6 years ago to start working on ‘How To Get Away With Murder.’ Every time, when I’ve gone back and visited, I’ve found myself overwhelmed, stressed out, and exhausted. Trying to see so many people, being asked to do work things and fit in all of the activities that I can only do in NYC made me feel constantly guilty if I felt like I was letting people down by not seeing them or overwhelmed because I never had enough alone time to recharge and do the things that I know allow me to thrive. The city has a pace that can support a never-ending grind, and it has been very easy for me to fall back into that pattern when I visit. # This last trip, a few weeks ago, was the first time since moving away that I was able to say that overall my experience being back in NYC was joyful and that I truly loved it. I had to make time for naps, for reading, for spending time alone, and for sitting in the park just watching people go by. @jlovecalderon has been so helpful in this process, as we worked to transform my trips to NYC into one of joy...removing the word “should” from my mind, and exercising healthy boundaries. # Being born and raised in New York City, I’ve always loved people-watching. And I’m grateful for even the simple moments of pause and reflection when I go back to NYC...the moments that make it feel more like living than visiting. Or course, it helps that it wasn’t spring so my allergies didn’t get fucked up, it’s not cold-ass winter, and it wasn’t so hot and humid that I felt like I was living inside of a sun-baked scrotum. # I hope you enjoy this minute of the sights and sounds of the City (I’ll let you imagine the smells on your own).

"No Ashes In The Fire: Coming of Age Black & Free in America" by Darnell L. Moore ( @mooredarnell ) # Darnell is a tremendous writer.  His words are beautifully pieced together into a truly stirring portrait of life in all of its complications and humanity.  He so deftly paints his story, one in which the United States of America is built to trample, and anchors it in a love for Black folx, LGBTQ people, and ultimately himself. # I’m so appreciative of all of the work that Darnell does, and feel so incredibly fortunate that he is an advisor at @WeInspireJustice as well! @jlovecalderon and I just feel so lucky and grateful! ❤️ # AND if you're in NYC come out to the panel I am producing with Playboy on The Future of Masculinity ‪this Friday June 21st 5-6pm‬ featuring the brilliant minds of @mooredarnell, @freckledwhileblack @carlosaglive @conradricamora with a mindfulness collab with my partner @jlovecalderon and beatboxer @airloombeats -- you don't want to miss it! http://playboyevents.com/playhousenyc/futureofmasculinity 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 # "Loving oneself and being loved while navigating the violence that harms black people's psyches and well-being is a survival tactic that requires work.  Staying alive when you've been counted dead is love." # "The negative portrayals of Camden and the black people who lived there, which pointed to the problems that seemed to undermine any potential for good in Camden, always upheld the black and Latino inhabitants as the sources of the violence and poverty plaguing the city.  But that is a misguided and ahistorical idea.  We were never the problem.  The entrenched, interlocking systems of antiblack racism, economic disinvestment, and political exploitation ravaging Camden and its black and Latino residents were the sparks always smoking, and they preempted the eventual flames that would drastically shift the sate of our city." # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads (link in bio) #McGReads

In response to this shitty fatphobic article from @telegraph . Repost from @shishi.rose : “I work out at home because for years I’ve been too scared to go to the gym and thought things like ‘what will people think or say about me being at the gym in this body?” Or ‘What if I can’t do what everyone else can do there and I look pathetic?’ I have an auto immune disorder and hip issues that means I can’t always keep up with everyone else no matter how fit I am. I also didn’t want to go to the gym and look frumpy or have on too many clothes and overheat. • Its wild to me how much people hate fat bodies. That people tell us to work out constantly and yet when there’s work out gear designed for us to do just that we are still shamed and vilified. • You don’t make comments about peoples bodies because you are genuinely worried about their health. You do it because we are walking embodiments of everything you hate about yourselves and try not to be so you attack it. You hate to see someone existing in a body with joy that you deem disgusting, so you put it down. And even when you think you dont you still do it in tiny ways whether you realize it or not. We all do. • Some of the women in my family used to have this game that they played when we were out and about. They would see someone and ask “I dont look as bad as that person do I?” The person would usually be in shorts or something tight that clung to their bodies. I feel like they choose those ones because they wanted to find the ones that looked the most carefree and cut that down. One of us kids would say “no you don’t” and somehow that would reaffirm that their lives weren’t total fuck ups. I learned a long time ago to hate fat people, unpacking that and changing that has been one of my hardest struggles especially as a fat person. Because giving that up means I’d have to stop self hating. • Im wondering - have you examined your own fatphobia? Have you unpacked your relationship to it and food? How do you talk t

Dawn's creative work has long intersected with her advocacy work, which has ranged from youth arts empowerment to advancing gender equity to racial justice organizing. Edgar Villanueva is a Native American author and activist who is passionate about racial and economic justice, particularly in communities of color, Indigenous communities, the US South and in communities impacted by HIV/AIDS. Check out his game-changing book “Decolonizing Wealth”! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 # RSVP at bit.ly/2VKWPx6 or click the link in my bio!

This is why accountability feels like an attack to those of us that are used to having our lies validated. Unlearning ego, unlearning all the shit that our society teaches us everyday is essential to our own happiness, liberation, and higher consciousness. To truly be agents of change, we need to look at the lies we tell ourselves and unlearn the belief systems that prop them up. (Image reposted from @larenztate )

"Communion: The Female Search For Love" by bell hooks # I've loved every bell hooks book that I've read (this is my third)! I find her takes on love as influenced by patriarchy, gender roles and systems of oppression to be spot on in my experience. Having first read "The Will To Change: Men, Masculinity and Love" and then "All About Love: New Visions," this was a great compliment. It was also important to me to read this to better understand what the women in my life go through when it comes to dating and looking for a partner. Too many books about love and dating leave out the impacts of the way that we are socialized, instead teaching people how to adapt to these oppressive systems. But the truth is, we must liberate ourselves from them if we are ever to explore the full range of our humanity (and love) that we are possible of, no matter what gender we identify as. # "Often, especially for adult women, the choice to be self-loving requires tremendous sacrifice. This is especially true if prior to doing the work of self-love everyone in their lives were accustomed to devaluing and/or subordinating them. Acknowledging this helps us understand why masses of women who may intuitively know they need to do the work of self-love are trapped by fear. Significant changes means we have to confront loss. Whenever we give something up, there is a gap- even if what we are giving up needs to go." #bellhooks #communion # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads (link in bio) #mcgreads

"Vanishing New York: How A Great City Lost Its Soul" by Jeremiah Moss ( @mossvanishingnewyork ) # Absolutely loved this book and if you love NYC, I can't recommend this enough. Was having dinner with @moustachemannyc in NYC when we happened upon a bookstore called "Unoppressive Non-Imperialist Bargain Books" which ended up being a fitting place for me to buy this book. # Growing up in Manhattan (in Chelsea), this book truly shifted much of my understanding of how the City has changed since I was a child. Yes, NYC is always changing, as Moss says, but what has taken place more recently has been more rapid and unlike any of the previous changes that NYC has seen due to numerous factors...but especially those in power catering to the extremely wealthy, real estate interests, and to corporations at any costs. # Moss is truly a talented writer and portrays the spirit of the City in a captivating way, mostly through his own stories and the stories of those that he has been in contact with through his work. It is these personal stories that patch together the depiction of the soul of the city in such a gripping and intimate way. A fabric that has been and is continuing to be rapidly torn apart as poor and working class people (and especially People of Color) are continuing to be displaced at alarming rates. This book both rekindled a deep passion for NYC and simultaneously made me angry at what has been and continues to take place. # On a sidenote, I went to preschool in the basement of the McBurney YMCA a few blocks from where I grew up (which has since become a few different gyms). It wasn't until reading this book that I learned that the Village People's YMCA song was based on the YMCA where I went to preschool. So much incredible history to be learned from this book. #VanishingNewYork #JeremiahMoss # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads (link in bio) #mcgreads

Statement from the Coalition to #FreeMasonique @freemasonique "Today, Masonique pled guilty to a reduced charge of involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutor Ron O’Brien bullied this teenager into accepting charges for a murder that Officer Eric Richards committed. This is one of many instances of the racist, classist carceral system pressuring Black people into needlessly accepting punitive measures. By scapegoating her and disappearing her behind bars, Ron O’Brien has allowed another killer cop to evade accountability. We are angry and disappointed in the outcome, but we as a coalition still stand alongside Masonique and will do what we can to advocate for her. This is not over!"

Columbus Police killed 16-year-old Julius Tate Jr. in December and are pinning their murder on his girlfriend Masonique Saunders. This system is so fixed against black youth that when an unarmed teenager is shot dead by police, instead of being accountable they scapegoat a young black woman. Since December, Masonique has sat in a jail cell languishing as they attempt to try her as an adult (Masonique 'celebrated' her 17th birthday behind bars). We know that these charges are unjust, and demand that they #DropTheCharges and #FreeMasonique. You can support by doing any or all of the following: -Write a statement or post a video in support of Masonique, tagging @freemasonique. -Donate to Masonique’s legal fees at https://www.gofundme.com/free-masonique-legal-fees and get involved with the National Week of Action at freemasonique.home.blog -Call Prosecutor Ron O’Brien at (614) 525-3555 and demand that Masonique be released and that her charges be dropped.

"Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight For Sex Workers' Rights" by Juno Mac & Molly Smith # I have a deep appreciation for this book and it touched on all of the areas that I hoped it would plus more. Too often, sex workers are left out of conversations about their own lives, rights, and the laws that affect them. The result is disastrous for sex workers and it only further marginalizes one of the most marginalized populations. Too often, our culture's way of 'caring for' sex workers is actually antithetical to their safety and well-being, in large part because we are making decisions without centering those that have the lived experience. Only when we are able to listen to those that are most directly impacted, will we ever achieve a world of true liberation. # As with any undocumented workers, harsher border policies make the workers more easily exploited by their industry/employers (it's very hard to stick up for your rights or unionize when you can be easily deported). The book also does a good job of making sure to include how various practices affect the lives of prostitutes of color, those who are trans, chemically dependent as well as unhoused prostitutes. Our politics really aren't worth shit if they're not including how to achieve liberation for the most oppressed. # "It is not the task of sex workers to apologise for what prostitution is. Sex workers should not have to defend the sex industry to argue that we deserve the ability to earn a living without punishment. People should not have to demonstrate that their work has intrinsic value to society to deserve safety at work. Moving towards a better society- one in which more people's work does have wider value, one in which resources are shared on the basis on need- cannot come about through criminalization. Nor can it come about through treating marginalized people's material needs and survival strategies as trivial. Sex workers ask to be credited with the capacity to struggle with work- even to hate

By @farhoudmeybodi : “Astronomers have just taken the first ever image of a black hole, one the most mysterious objects in the universe. The black hole itself – a cosmic trapdoor with a diameter stretching 38 billion kilometers, from which neither light nor matter can escape – is totally unseeable. But this photograph reveals a beautiful halo of dust and gas, tracing the outline of a colossal black hole, at the heart of the Messier 87 galaxy, 55 million light years from Earth. Black holes were first predicted by Einstein’s theory of relativity – although Einstein himself was skeptical that they actually existed. Since then, astronomers have accumulated overwhelming evidence that these cosmic sinkholes are out there, including recent detection of gravitational waves that ripple across the cosmos when pairs of them collide. The breakthrough image was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a network of eight radio telescopes spanning locations from Antarctica to Spain and Chile, in an effort involving more than 200 scientists. This magical photo is our first glimpse of a black hole’s accretion disk, a fuzzy doughnut-shaped ring of gas and dust that steadily feeds the monster within. I mean how much more esoteric can this whole thing get? We’re quite literally gazing into the womb of the universe, which is a manifestation of darkness and shadow, not light. And if you venture too close to this mythic force and cross “event horizon,” you'll never escape. It boggles my mind how similar the macro of the universe is to the micro within each of us. Every one is us has a shadow deep within. A hidden place where we suppress the darkness of our childhood traumas. But this pain isn’t the end, only the beginning. By journeying into the shadow, which is a Herculean task, we break through to the other side, into the light, the joy, the possibility. And ironically, the only way we can truly grasp the gravity of this monumental force is through true collaboration from differe

"Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good" by @adriennemareebrown  # After loving Adrienne's last book, #EmergentStrategy , I was very excited about #PleasureActivism .  I've found her thoughts and methods to be very different from a lot of what I read about activism, and also really necessary for our movements.  Growing up as a boy and living as a man in this world never taught me that joy should be a priority for me.  For most of my life, in fact, a great deal of my sense of value was directly tied to how hard I could grind and push myself through difficult circumstances to achieve my goals.  This was true, not only as I competed in powerlifting and bodybuilding, but also through how I moved through life, affecting all of my decisions.  So much so, that I never imagined that there could be another way. # In the last couple of years, I've been working on exploring what brings me joy.  This is a concept that I really hadn't even considered until not that long ago.  And with the absence of this mindset, my life was really controlled by things I felt like I *should* be doing, which is really based in obligation.  I was constantly living in a state of feeling guilty for not living up to my own expectations, or overwhelmed by trying to fulfill the obligations that I thought that I *should* fulfill.  And this was true across all areas of my life, from friendships to family, and activism to my career. # I love how this book urges us to get in touch with our deepest desires, and pleasure itself.  People of all genders have been socialized one way or another, away from being in touch with what gives us pleasure, especially during sex.  As a straight man, it's actually been a pretty new journey for me to understand that I could say 'no' to sex, without feeling shame for it. If “no” doesn’t feel like an option, our “yes” will always lack clarity. # Activism can be very difficult, especially for those that are directly targeted by oppression.  Even for myself, I have

"Dare To Lead" by @BreneBrown # Really loved this one by BrenĂŠ Brown! Being in leadership positions can be difficult. Oftentimes we unintentionally cause harm because we haven't really dealt with our own issues. This profoundly affects our relationships and the spaces that we are creating and a part of, particularly when there are power dynamics involved (which there almost always are). I found this to be a really helpful resource when it comes to thinking about how to lead in a way that is healthier, happier, and more productive for all people involved. # The parts about perfectionism and how they impact one's capacity to lead were particularly resonant. As BrenĂŠ says, "Whenever perfectionism is driving, shame is always riding shotgun." So many people have never really addressed their perfectionism and in fact, many believe that it is a positive quality, but it is not...it is very different than "striving for excellence." Thinking of perfectionism as being a cover for shame has been really helpful for me in letting go of this harmful way of being. A way of being that created huge amounts of stress in my life and not only prevented me from being my happiest self, but from being in relationship with others as my highest and best self. Digging into the shame underneath it is critical. Only then will we finally realize that trying to be "perfect" will never compensate for the profound lack that we feel underneath. # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads (link in bio) #McGReads

Sending my love to all of my Muslim brothers and sisters and kin. ❤️ I’ve been so angry and heartbroken over the #ChristChurch white supremacist terrorist attack. I’ve been at a loss for what I want to say. To non-Muslims and those that are not directly targeted by a culture of white supremacy (white people), we must recognize how our own actions and inactions normalize white supremacy. And when I say white supremacy, I do not mean people who identify as such, but a culture in which whiteness is seen as the default, and which makes every other identity an other. This is the foundation from which all anti-Muslim racism exists. If we are not noticing the ways in which we minimize or are indifferent to many acts of anti-Muslim racism, we will unconsciously suppose the the foundations of the white supremacist period pictured above. # If you are not NOTICING white supremacy, you are NORMALIZING white supremacy. I would encourage people (particularly white people) to look through the slides above and really think more deeply about how you normalize white supremacy in your own life. # Repost from @munroebergdorf - "White supremacy starts with indifference, and builds upon that with racism, discrimination and violence, slowly normalising these behaviours and systems. We need to work together to dismantle this system: issues like gender inequality and racism intersect and result in violence which affects us all. “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor” - @desmondtutu." #repost @theequalityinstitute #feminism #genderequality #theequalityinstitute #theEQI #equality #feminist #whitesupremacy #race #racism #infographic #endracism

“That White Girl" by JLove Calderón ( @JLoveCalderon )  # So much love & appreciation for my friend, coach, mentor, & creative and business partner JLove.  I've known her for only a little over a year, and she has had a profound effect on my life and my activism.  Having only heard little bits of information about her early life and how it impacted who she came to be, I was tremendously grateful to be able to dive into her herstory through her writing. It is honest and has given me a lot to reflect on how whiteness, class, and patriarchy function in this country. I truly feel that this past year of my life has been one of growth that I never would have imagined was possible and that my transformation is largely part of the work that we've been able to do together.  And I've grown to understand how transforming beliefs and fears that were constantly running in the background of my mind have allowed me to feel both more joyful and more bold in my life and activism than ever before.  # I am beyond excited to announce that JLove and I just launched a Social Impact and Creative company together, called Inspire Justice! :) ( ( @WeInspireJustice / WeInspireJustice.com ) There are two main platforms of our work: the first of which is Social Impact Empowerment Coaching for public figures who want to leverage their voices, creativity, and hearts for social change and to help them become the activists that we need them to be to cause real, deep change.  The second part is doing trainings for creative companies on how to shift culture to a place where folx can thrive and be their best and most fully expressed selves.  I am so excited to be living out a dream of mine where I am coaching clients as well (I’ve always said that an alternative career choice of mine could be a therapist, but in many ways this feels even more aligned!). We're also going to be producing socially conscious content, so stay tuned on that! :) # Our company will be giving reparations to Black-led grassroot

Repost from @tamararenaye via the @theequalityinstitute # This is so true. Particularly for those of us that are new to social justice work and for those of us with the most privilege. When I started out as an activist, I remember being upset and angry when people tried to hold me accountable for the effects of my words and action (as white men I would say we tend to do this the most). Despite my best intentions, I inevitably made mistakes, as we all do. Nowadays, I still sometimes feel my heart rate speed up when someone tells me about how my words or actions or lack of actions has caused harm, but I am more adept at getting curious rather than getting defensive. Working through the shame that used to be easily triggered in me was a part of that process as well. Perfection is a cover for shame, and the way to address it is not simply by “trying to be more perfect” (although as activists we should learn and grow from our mistakes) but also do the uncomfortable work of understanding what is deep underneath. Our activism and our allyship requires that we are able to take criticism and grow from it. Without accountability, there will never be justice or equity.

Text below is reposted from @rachel.cargle and art is by @jeeheipark . Let’s all become familiar with the term “Spiritual Bypassing,” starting with Google. SB often shows up as white people speaking a big game about spirituality without understanding our responsibility in confronting systems of oppression. It’s dangerous and inauthentic. # “Spiritual bypassing as it relates to race: a gaslighting technique in which someone from the white community insists on dismissing the lived experiences of an oppressed or marginalized group in the name of “love”, “light” or “peace”. • This perceived higher morality is really just their white privilege materializing as the option to opt out of acknowledging or engaging in a reality they aren’t directly affected by. • As opposed to taking into account their role in the social constructs that exists, they’ll try to make the oppressed communities think they simply “aren’t showing up better spiritually” and that’s why they are in the position they are in as opposed to the truths of structural racism. • Thanks for coming to my @ted talk 🙏🏾 • Art by @jeeheipark • #yoga #loveandlight #lululemon #howdarling #pnw #puppiesofinstagram #kittensofinstagram #yogaeverydamnday #spiritualganster #gabbybernstein #supersoulsunday #feminist #feminism #intersectionalfeminism #rbg #solange #momsofinstagram #momsofboys #knittersofinstagram #letterboardquotes #stationery “

"Angela Davis: An Autobiography" by Angela Davis # So much respect and appreciation of Angela Davis, who has become a shero for me in the past few years.  The amount of repression that she and other Black Power revolutionaries faced to advance justice is just a blip in most history books, if it is mentioned at all.  Her story is incredible and her resilience is inspiring.  This book offers a first-hand account of the U.S. governments tactics of repression that ranged from incarceration and assassination of activists that fought for justice. The power of activists like Angela Davis and mass grassroots movements posed such a great threat to the white supremacist and capitalist bedrock of this country, that she ended up on the FBI's most-wanted list. # Davis spent 16 months incarcerated (mostly in solitary confinement) and faced the possibility of the death penalty.  Learning the history of our country from those who have pushed forward change highlights the importance of strength in numbers and current activism such as the mobilization around Dr. Melina Abdullah, ( @docmellymel ) lead organizer of Black Lives Matter LA ( @blmlosangeles ), in response to 8 bogus charges intended to silence her and the movement.  With the dedication of her attorneys and the power of people in numbers, these charges were dropped.  But if we don't understand history, we cannot understand the present, or what needs to happen to get to the future that we all desperately need. # "The real strength of my approach at that time resides, I think, in its honest emphasis on grassroots contributions and achievements, so as to demystify the usual notion that history is the product of unique individuals possessing inherent qualities of greatness...while one of the protagonists in this battle was indeed the state, the other was not a single individual, but rather the collective power of the thousands and thousands of people opposed to racism and political repression." - #AngelaDavis # My Booklist: b

(Vid from @drjoedispenza ) I believe that we can all make decisions that allow us to lead more empowered lives. And that with the right tools, resources, and mindsets, that we can accomplish more and be healthier, happier people than we likely could have ever imagined. # AND. I know that external realities that we live in also hugely impact the everyday lives we live. Being empowered is important, but by itself will not fix so many of the hugely destructive issues in the society that we live in: racism, sexism, capitalism, LGBTQ-phobia, etc. Without a deep analysis around how these systems of oppression operate (particularly in the areas where we have privilege) and consistent action taken to dismantle these forms of oppression, I believe that self-help and empowerment is problematically wielded as another tool that tells people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, while ignoring the very real external factors that impact people’s lives. # Those of us with great amounts of privilege, particularly in class, race and gender, must include anti-oppression as a part of our life’s work if we are ever to decenter our egos and reach to higher levels of consciousness (both socially and spiritually). And not just through charity work, which does not ultimately change the systems that caused the need for charity in the first place. Repost from @mia.mingus (and I suggest you follow her!) - “we must not only take action when full-blown violence happens, we must also take action to change the many (seemingly small) conditions that contribute to violence—and can often prevent violence. because harm, violence and abuse do not happen in a vacuum and they are supported by dynamics that we often ignore or avoid. . if you can’t give or receive feedback (or even reflections or feelings) with the people you’re in relationship with, then you are setting yourself up (and your relationships) to be unaccountable. you are reinforcing and contributing to a normalized culture of unaccountability, which directly feeds a culture of harm, violence and abuse. . (and this goes for all kinds of relationships: friend, partner, date, child, parent, coworker, housemate, relative, mentor, etc.) . so, do the work now to make sure that people feel and know they can come to you with feedback, reflections, feelings, questions. and do your own self work to make sure you can make good on that offer. and vice versa, bc i know for many of folks, they can receive, but they don’t know how to share how they truly feel with the people in their lives. . because if we can’t address the small things between us, how will we be able to address the big things? (and also, addressing the small things can help to prevent the big things.) . if we want other people to be accountable, then we must also practice accountability. every day, every moment. in small and big ways. we must also *proactively* build accountable lives and that starts w building relationships where we can talk about and *practice* accountability w each other. because the quality of our relationships is a key condition that can help us create (or block) the conditions that support transformative justice. 🌿 . . [tweet from @tayywalkk: I read this today: Any relationship you have that could be ruined by having a conversation about your feelings, standards, and/or expectations

ANOTHER BIG WIN IN LA!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Grateful for everyone that has been a part of this campaign and everyone out there fighting the prison-industrial complex! (Link in bio for article) # Below from @mikedelarocha # “I still remember the phone call. It was probably super early in the morning or super late at night. The one and only @osopepatrisse called me and asked if @revolveimpact would be interested in creating what would now be known as @justicelanow — We would integrate arts and culture. We would invite new allies and voices. We would have a strategic inside/outside strategy. And most importantly we would build off the decades worth of tireless work of advocates and groups like @lacanetwork @dignityandpowernow @youthjusticela @curbprisons @criticalresistance and so many others. — September 2017. We launched. 100 jail beds dropped in front of the LA County Board of Supervisors. No one said it was possible. But we believed. We organized. We all played our roles. And we kept moving. — February 2019. We did it you all!!!! We stopped a jail from being built. We changed hearts and minds. We redirected resources. We centered love so much in our work that our family members would no longer be treated in cages but in hospitals. — I love you @osopepatrisse @cocosouthla @dignityandpowernow @youthjusticela @curbprisons @justleadershipusa @criticalresistance @translatinacoalition and everyone whose a part of @justicelanow This is our victory. Those in power and aligned to the LAPD tried to repress the dissent of the courageous and awe-inspiring @docmellymel and those who protest against the daily injustices committed by the LAPD and the city of Los Angeles. The country has a despicable history of attempting to and actually silencing Black revolutionaries through many means. But they can’t do that when we have people power on our side. As I continue my fight for Black lives and for all those that are oppressed, I am also taking time to celebrate. As Melina says, “When we fight, we win!” # Repost from @docmellymel - “A VICTORY TODAY!!!! This morning, we marched into court led by a fearless legal team and supported by hundreds of folks in the courtroom and lobby. We said loudly, “No plea deal! We want the charges dropped. We have a right and a duty to fight for our people!” And WE WON!!!! So deeply grateful to the tens of thousands of folks who stood up and demanded an end to the criminalization of Black protest. All praises to our Creator, our mightiest Ancestors, and those on whose behalf we struggle. Thank you to my family, to the Mama and Baba freedom fighters who walked before us, and to the beautiful family that I have gained through this work. I am so blessed to be a part of such a beloved community. Thank you for your unwavering support and tireless work. NOW...let’s channel that energy into the real freedom struggle! See you on the frontlines!”

"Invisible Man Got The Whole World Watching" by Mychal Denzel Smith @mychaldenzel # Smith is a tremendous writer. Highly recommend reading this. I really loved his memoir and deeply appreciated reading about his journey and evolution as a human being and as a Black man who is deeply invested in justice for all people. I also really admire the view of intersectionality that his journey has had, as he explores his own sexism, transphobia, homophobia, ableism and other oppressive ideologies that we are all steeped in and internalizing by living in the U.S. For me, it felt like a perfect mix of life story blended with discussions of some of the most important issues that we are up against as Americans who are struggling for equality. His reasons for frustration with electoral politics and analysis of Obama's presidency are a much needed point of conversation that is sorely lacking on the Left. # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads (link in bio) #mcgreads

From @sonyareneetaylor . I feel this deeply. Sometimes, people ask me why I am compelled to read so much about social justice. There are a number of reasons. One very important one is that my ability to be an agent of change will always be limited by how much education and understanding I have about the issues that we face as a society. # I spent 28 years of my life rarely doing any deep, intentional consideration of people’s perspectives outside of my own. About how my experiences and the lives of others are impacted by their race, gender, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, and other identities. Nor did I have any recognition of how this impacted my relationships with every person. # The knowledge that I have gained from political education has hugely impacted how I live my life and who I’ve become. It allows me to understand how change has happened in the past, and what must happen for us to create the future that all desperately need. # For me, unlearning oppressive ways of thinking and being is undoubtedly and act of self-care. Integrity matters to me. And without this knowledge that I use to inform my actions, I can never be in integrity. Without it, I can never live up to the values that I espouse because this world is constantly asking us to side with our privilege through “going with the flow.” # Morality and fairness have always been important qualities to me. It’s what drew me to philosophy when I was younger. But even when I studied philosophy in college, I never realized how they information that I was getting was so shaped by the fact that there was no analysis of how systems of oppression impact our “philosophies” and how each of us view the world. # If we can recognize that hate is a quality which destroys the lives of those that live with it, then we must acknowledge the cousin of hate...apathy. # We all have learning and unlearning that we must do to be in alignment with our values. What is the next area for you to become more educated abou

"Decolonizing Wealth: Indigenous Wisdom to Heal Divides and Restore Balance" by Edgar Villanueva @villanuevaedgar @decolonizingwealth # This book is definitely a must-read, particularly for those who are involved in philanthropy, non-profits, foundations, or charity work.  Villanueva gives real insights into the problematic aspects of philanthropy and how systems of oppression are often replicated through the processes of philanthropy by those who get to decide where the money goes and how it is used.  The unique aspect about this book, is the hope that Villanueva gives about money's capacity to be used "as medicine" to heal communities and traumas, not just for the colonized and oppressed, but for the colonizers and those of privilege. # One of the major problems with philanthropy is that it very rarely puts those who have experienced the oppression in charge of deciding where the funding goes.  Instead, it relies on people on the outside of those communities, to determine how they want to engage in the process of "helping." # From the book, "My central argument is that what ails philanthropy at its core is colonialism.  Almost without exception, funder reinforce colonial division of Us vs Them, Haves vs Have Nots, and mostly white saviors and white experts vs *poor, needy, urban, disadvantaged, marginalized, at-risk people* (take your pick of euphemisms for people of color). That statistics speak for themselves: 92 percent of foundation CEOs are white, 89 percent of foundation boards are white, while only 7 to 8 percent of foundation funding goes specifically to people of color.  Philanthropy is the savior mentality in institutional form, which instead of helping- is ostentatiously proclaimed intent- actual further divides and destabilizes society." I don’t have the words to describe how furious, devastated, and disgusted I am by this. I find myself compartmentalizing the rage that I am feeling not only about this hateful act of terror, but of the silence and complicity of my fellow white and heterosexual people. Just a few days ago, it was International Holocaust Remembrance Day. And many people, including myself, posted that the holocaust did not begin in the gas chambers, but with the rhetoric of hate through stereotyping, scapegoating, and the general indifference of many people who did not directly commit these crimes but silently condoned them by not speaking out against them. Sometimes I find myself so frustrated with other white and heterosexual people (of all political affiliations), wondering how bad it has to get before we collectively up our level of engagement to stop this poison. Are we so resistant to discomfort that the surging violence against LGBTQ people, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color will continue to be an afterthought in our daily lives? Or will we finally commit to making this a priority in our lives? It is time to decide. NOW. # Repost from @ruralsurjnorcal - “I do not care if people you love wear that hat. It's not debatable, this is evil, homophobic racist terror. "Empire" star Jussie Smollett was brutally attacked by 2 men who beat him up, put his head in a noose and screamed, "This is MAGA country." Sources directly connected to Jussie tell TMZ, the actor arrived in Chicago from New York late Monday, and at around 2 AM he was hungry and went to a Subway. We're told when he walked out, someone yelled, "Aren't you that f***ot 'Empire' n*****?" The 2 men -- both white and wearing ski masks -- viciously attacked Jussie as he fought back, but they beat him badly and fractured a rib. They put a rope around his neck, poured bleach on him and as they left they yelled, 'This is MAGA country.'" #MAGA spells R-A-C-I-S-T “

“The Alchemist” by Paulo Coehlo # I tend to read only about one fiction book a year, and I’d been hearing about this one for years. It’s highly regarded by many people that I admire, so I went ahead and gave it a whirl when @vickivortex gave me a copy! I quite enjoyed it, and understand why so many people feel so strongly about it. Having transitioned to a place in my life where I now very much believe in the power of creating one's future and destiny through tapping into a universal force, this book is definitely an affirmation of that. I finished it on New Year's Eve, and then at 4am on New Year's Day I decided to stargaze in LA for about 15 minutes...and I saw a shooting star. :) For those who have read the book, I think they will understand the beauty of this. I am sitting with appreciating the message of trusting the universe. # It is also important to note that the story falls into the trope of “Orientalism” (a term coined and book written by Edward Saïd breaking down the causes and effects of stereotypical depictions of the Eastern world from a Western perspective of superiority). From Osama Filali Naji's blogpost on Arab Millennial: “The ´Arab deserts´ through which he and the Englishman travel are filled with mystery, tribes, magic, mischief, uncertainty, danger and thieves. This is a dangerous narrative as it reinforces the colonial attitude that Muslim and Arab cultures are ´fascinating´ interactions that are to be ´observed´ or ´studied´ by more intelligent and ambitious European travelers and readers – at least, that is the implication... almost as if we are exhibits in an art gallery waiting to be observed and commented on for all of our mystery and majesty...I don’t believe that Coelho has written this book intentionally to disempower Arabs – he appears to be a very kind and humble person on social media. I have therefore concluded that he, too, is a victim of age-old narratives on Middle Eastern culture that simply ‘sell’ to European audience.” #

MLK speaking on white privilege, without calling it that. Us white people whose parents were born here have been benefitting from the privilege of whiteness since before we were born. The wealth accrued that was not available to Black families gets passed down and continues to build wealth in white communities and so on and so on. This does not mean that every white person has class privilege or money, but is one of the reasons that white people, as a whole, are disproportionately more wealthy than Black people. It’s time to get to work to even dismantle these systems.

Posted this last year and I’m posting it again this year. # A few years ago on MLK day, I posted, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." I saw that a woman of color had commented, "why do all white people post this quote?" I remember feeling defensive. I thought, how could she disagree that love was a good idea? How could she disagree with MLK about love? # It wasn't until quite a while later that I saw the limitations of my thinking. Now, 3 and a half years into making a life priority out of confronting white and male supremacy head on, I can better understand what I was missing. It is not that the quote that I shared is "bad" or "wrong," or that I am either of those things for posting it. The problem is in the fact that I posted this quote, and then the next day, went about living my life the same way that I always had. I rarely thought about racism. Being white, I never HAD to think about it. Despite considering myself liberal, I wasn't politically engaged, and I certainly was not engaged in consistently exploring my whiteness or working to change the systems that gave me those privileges. # So the problem with posting the quote...and ONLY doing that, is that it let me (and often lets most other white people) off the hook of having to continuously think about and engage with whiteness and racism that shows up even in liberal and progressive circles and cities. MLK wrote, “Whites, it must frankly be said, are not putting in a similar mass effort to reeducate themselves out of their racial ignorance. It is an aspect of their sense of superiority that the white people of America believe they have so little to learn.” # White folks...we must do more than be angry at the current president. The is work to be done in our hearts, our minds, and our communities...no matter how liberal or progressive they are. Will you honor his true legacy? # We must be CONTINUALLY become more engaged in the

Highly recommend following @ruralsurjnorcal for lots of great political memes like this first one # Yesterday was MLK's birthday. And Monday is MLK Day. Perhaps you are white and wondering what this meme means? I would say it applies to white people of all genders. Unfortunately, MLK's legacy (that has been severely altered by the white retelling of history) has made him out to be some apolitical figure, like Santa Claus. And too often, as white people, we use the limited understanding of his legacy to explicitly (or sometimes we just think it), tell Black people that they should be nicer to us while they are fighting their oppression. We assume that MLK would have done it differently, and wouldn't have been so "mean" to us. # And we might even think, "if Black people weren't so sensitive about race/racism, then maybe I would really be an ally!" Or, "If I was alive when MLK was around, I really would've supported HIM!" But the truth is, allyship can not depend on how easy a marginalized group makes it for you. If we REALLY and truly care about justice and equality, we will push forwards, continue learning and growing and trying to change the world so that racism and this huge wealth gaps doesn't exist. Saying, or thinking, that Black people not making us comfortable is our barrier towards trying to be better allies, is an excuse. It says that you value your comfort over equality. # And for the love of god, can we as white people, PLEASE share some different quotes on Monday than about how "love drives out hate"? There are some in this post. Google Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and "capitalism," "socialism," "white people," "the white moderate" and read his letter from Birmingham Jail. Sharing the same quote that most of us do every year (I've done it before too!) is just a way of remaining safe, comfortable, and apolitical as this man was hated and murdered precisely because he WAS radical and political.

Consistently working on this. It’s so deep how hard this is to do. Not long ago, I wouldn’t have even thought I had many needs or the need to be better at setting boundaries. But the more deeply I’ve gotten to know myself, the more I’ve realized how important this is for allowing me to live my best life. So often, I’ve felt overwhelmed because I haven’t felt capable of setting boundaries, or anxious that I wouldn’t be able to set boundaries about something in the future, or guilty for even needing to set them. But that’s no way to live. We all deserve to express our boundaries and have people in our lives who care enough about us to respect them. # Repost from @lost_nowhere - This is what healthy boundaries feels like! Thank you for sending me this @dahliaseed 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 # Repost from @theconsciouskid # "For the first time in its 127-year history, the American Psychological Association has issued guidelines to help psychologists specifically address the issues of men and boys — and the document features a warning. “Traditional masculinity ideology has been shown to limit males’ psychological development, constrain their behavior, result in gender role strain and gender role conflict and negatively influence mental health and physical health,” the report warns. The new “Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Boys and Men” defines “masculinity ideology” as “a particular constellation of standards that have held sway over large segments of the population, including: anti-femininity, violence, adventure, risk, achievement, and eschewal of the appearance of weakness.” The report links this ideology to homophobia, bullying, sexual harassment, and a series of stark statistics: Men commit approximately 90 percent of all homicides in the U.S., they are far more likely than women to be arrested and charged with intimate partner violence in the U.S., and they are four times more likely than women to die of suicide worldwide. The guidelines for psychologists outlined in the report include encouraging them to "recognize that masculinities are constructed based on social, cultural, and contextual norms"; "understand the impact of power, privilege, and sexism on the development of boys and men and on their relationships with others"; and "reduce the high rates of problems boys and men face and act out in their lives such as aggression, violence, substance abuse, and suicide." APA psychologist Jared Skillings said parents can play a part, too. He recommended they let their boys know, “It’s OK to not be OK all the time.”' --Tim Fitzsimons, @nbcnews #toxicmasculinity #masculinity #men #boys #psychology #sexism #metoo #timesup #consciousparenting #raisingboys #feminist #maleprivilege #gender #ge

“The Next American Revolution: Sustainable Activism For The Twentieth-Century” by Grace Lee Boggs with Scott Kurashige # I was thrilled to have this book be my first introduction to the movement leader and activist, Grace Lee Boggs. Having written this book at ninety five years old(!!!!), she offers immense insight into movements of the past and how we must adapt to create the world that we all so desperately need. She makes the case for hope and shows examples of the work being done in communities throughout the country, like in Detroit (with urban agriculture), that we must learn from order to thrive and survive. Challenging some pretty widely held beliefs about how revolution should happen, this book definitely got me thinking. # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgread (link in bio)

"Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood" by Carlos Andrés Gómez @carlosaglive # I really appreciate the depth of vulnerability and self-reflection in Carlos' book.  Both around his experiences as a man and specifically as a Latinx man. He grapples with his experiences being discriminated against based on his ethnicity while also understanding the privilege that he has due being light-skinned and at times, passing for being white. I found his experiences of being raised as a boy/man were similar to many of my own, as well as many of the men that I know.  When I first began to learn and speak about feminism a number of years ago, I only saw it as learning about the sexism that affected women (certainly not even considering non-binary people). I saw it as something that I was doing for *other people* simply because it was the right thing to do.  # It wasn’t until later that I realized the way that this same system of patriarchy has held me hostage as well.  The lives of men are often so constricted by these deeply entrenched forces of what it means to be "a real man," that most of us barely even notice the harm that it causes us.  It begins when we are children and is so ever-present that it becomes completely normalized before we are old enough to even consider it.  We are taught not to be vulnerable...so we are unable to process and understand our emotions and shame in ways that are so critical to us being healthy and happy human beings.  We are taught to dehumanize women in ways that prevent us from ever fully being in integrity. This is a deep soul-wound that is inflicted upon our hearts and souls. I now know that dismantling patriarchy is essential not only for the liberation of those that are oppressed based on their gender, but for cisgender men as well. We must break free of our allegiance to this oppressive system. #  My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgread (link in bio)

@thefatsextherapist : “...a message to all the white women who like & share my content. this is a message to every thin, every able bodied neurotypical, every cis, every hetero, every documented non black person of color. this is a message to anyone who’s never been incarcerated, or done sex work, or been criminalized for their drug use. . the information i offer on this platform feels so revolutionary because it is. this is what political ed feels like. & the reason it feels so painful to unlearn hegemony, but hopeful to imagine a more just future is bc we’re playing with new possibility models together in our imagination. but if that’s the limit to our shift in consciousness, then i’m here to tell you that’s not enough. . as the brilliant audre lorde wrote, “I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.” i expand that quote to any PERSON who is unfree. do you get it? our liberation is tied to each other. our struggles are interwoven like a rope. & we cannot achieve fat liberation without black liberation, just ask @chairbreaker. they literally wrote a paper on it for patreon! . all of the words you consume on this page is only useful until the MOMENT you’re willing to DO something with that knowledge. if you’re sitting at work & are worried about ruffling feathers or losing your likeability by raising awareness of an issue - RED ALERT - thats the feeling of being unwilling to give up power. @ihartericka posted a thorough explanation of how white folks retain power by posturing & theorizing their path for liberation without ever really taking the steps to destabilize an oppressive structure. i recommend checking their highlights for more gems. also the book : adrienne marie brown ‘Emergent Strategies’ . if you’re not actually taking steps to use this political education to disrupt the status quo, then you are upholding oppressive systems. share your ideas of what you’d like to see folks with power doing more of. is

Via @shishi.rose “I think the biggest lie that so many of us still believe is that there is something somewhere that is worthy of trust within our “justice” system. We still put our faith in these systems because we’ve built nothing else to lean on and when we do try to build it’s quickly burned to the ground in front of us. • Someone snatches our purse or one of our relatives has a mental breakdown and we don’t know what to do? We call the cops. We keep calling the cops hoping for a different outcome as if hundreds of years of them proving to us that their original names - Nigger Hunters isn’t just as valid today as it was then. So we rely on them to save us. Like finding/arresting the white man who is responsible for this 7-year-olds murder will somehow mean justice. As if him rotting in a cell will help her see her 8th birthday. We cling to that because its all we think we have. • Its so much trickier to dismantle racism when its not done only on a reactionary basis. Because that would mean you can’t just wait until something happens to fight or to react. It means you fight always, before a thing happens. It means you never stop building. It means all these white people that say everyday “im listening” are actually pointless. They want to scream about these stories after they happen but do zero work to do more than merely listen or stop these things from happening in the first place. How much longer will you listen to racism? Everyone keeps doing the bare minimum and expecting that to end this. • White parents have the biggest job out of anyone else and they continue to fail. They make sure to flood my DMs with the books they bought their white child about race as if a book is going to stop them from growing up to inflict racial violence. They read books to their child every night before bed about Black people after the child spends the entire day fully submerged in their white privilege. But when something like this happens its always “Not my child, my child wo

Repost from @jlovecalderon # “Good morning!!!! Know The Ledge brought to you by @lahtere 💫💫 telling truth, tho hard af, is a contribution to the person your telling it to. When we are not fully expressed we create fake relationships built on fake conversations. Relationships are built one conversation at a time which means the quality of your conversation IS the quality of your relationship. (Got that from Susan Scott, author of Fierce Conversations). I’m blessed with a commUnity that tells me when I need to step up my game & I’m grateful. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my homies telling me hard truths. “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” as told to Alex Haley # Damn, this was a BOOK. Not just from a viewpoint of politics but from personal transformation and life story this is such a remarkable read. It’s fascinating to see Malcolm’s journey and his lifetime of learning paired with unlearning the internalized white supremacy that he was “brainwashed” into even as a child. He believed that this culture where whiteness was (and is) considered supreme, when compounded by institutionalized barriers of racism destroys the self worth of (in addition to the lives of countless) Black folx. His own journey of fighting against this is truly incredible. And while he dishes out necessary criticism of not just actively racist white people, he talks about the racism of Northern white liberals that would rather protest in the South than work to fix the problems in their own cities. This is still a problem as most white liberals complain about Trump and Republicans but mostly do nothing to address the oppression in their own cities or unlearn their own racism. Why do you think we have 60,000 homeless people in LA and the most murderous police force in the country? And yet somehow white liberals can find the fire to occasionally protest and get mad at the federal government...as if these forms of oppression aren’t also products of white supremacy when they happen in Hollywood. # In the words of Malcolm, “Yes, I will pull off that liberal’s halo that he spends such efforts cultivating. The North’s liberals have been for so long pointing accusing fingers at the South and getting away with it that they have fits when they are exposed as the world’s worst hypocrites.” # I have always appreciated his guideline for how white people can be of service to the movement in creating our own organizations intending to work in solidarity with POC-led orgs. And also by building a movement of white folx committed to undermining and ultimately destroying white supremacy for the liberation of all pe

The hypocrisy of those that talk about a “season for giving” and “love thy neighbor” while defending the human rights violations at the border is despicable. If you can’t be bothered to give a shit about these refugees, then you surely wouldn’t have cared about the political persecution of Jesus Christ. # “An 8-year-old boy from Guatemala died in government custody in New Mexico early Tuesday, U.S. immigration authorities said, marking the second death of an immigrant child in detention this month. The death came during an ongoing dispute over border security and with a partial government shutdown underway over President Donald Trump’s request for border wall funding. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the boy — identified by the Guatemalan consul in Phoenix as #FelipeAlonzoGómez — had shown “signs of potential illness” on Monday and was taken with his father to a hospital in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He was diagnosed with a cold and a fever, prescribed amoxicillin and ibuprofen, and released Monday afternoon after being held 90 minutes for observation, the agency said. The boy was returned to the hospital Monday evening with nausea and vomiting and died there just after midnight, CBP said.” Art found on @autonomousbrownberets_san_anto via @ruralsurjnorcal

Hope y’all have been nice and not naughty! And when I say “nice” I mean committed to dismantling systems of oppression and using your privilege to amplify the voices of the marginalized. And when I say “naughty” I mean refusing to acknowledge your silent complicity in systems of oppression simply because you think someone else (usually with less privilege) is going to handle with it. I care more about *what* you do than if you do it with a smile on your face.

From @chenchenwrites . I echo this to anyone who is part of a privileged group that claims to be baffled but what to do and how to help. Start reading. Start googling. I keep hearing men proclaiming to be confused by how to date in the “#MeToo era.” If we committed to reading books and googling articles by women (and especially women of color) about feminism how to end rape culture, and sexual violence, we would find the answers we are looking for. We can follow and repost the voices of the marginalized on this very issues. But for all of this to happen, we first have to accept that there are things outside of our first-person experience that we don’t have a full understanding of. And as white people, and/or men, we have to be willing to listen to and value the voices we are taught to devalue. If you only expect to learn from men and especially white men (consciously or not), we will never be able to learn about other people’s lives, and in turn our own unexamined perspectives that we hold to be objective and unbiased. It’s time to wake up.

Repost from @bodyimage_therapist - “Every now and again I get messages asking what to do next - what's outside of dieting and how do I get there? This is what I recommend initially - to start laying the foundations for new learning and unlearning. This list is about meeting yourself where you're at and shifting the focus. As simple as they appear, all listed out nice and neatly, it's an 'iterative' process. This means that you go back and forth over these points and approach them with new understandings over time as you learn more. Also, we need to be realistic from the start and recognise that diet culture is so pervasive at the moment, it's not going to go away super fast, and there will be people in your life that will refuse to consider what you're doing. That is their journey, not yours. Be curious and keep an open mind - you're about to learn so much about yourself 😁 . . From here, start with books 'Health At Every Size' by Linda Bacon and 'If Not Dieting, Then What?' by Dr Rick Kausman. There are many other books, but these will give you a foundation. If anyone wants to pop other books in the comments go for it! . . #psychology #healthateverysize #stigma #mentalhealth #feminism #wellbeing #health #edrecovery #dietitian #diet #dietculture #bodyimage #bodypositivity #bopo #intuitiveeating #nondiet “

#JakelinCaal. 😠😞 From @glowmaven - “A story broke about a Guatemalan girl who passed away in custody after crossing the border. She had not eaten or had anything to drink in days, sustained a fever over 105 degrees, which is beyond dangerous & results In febrile seizures and death. They didn’t get her medical attention for 90 minutes. _ DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen saId “This family chose to cross illegally.” _ Choice? Let’s talk about choice. Choice is an act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities, a possible course of action. This is not a choice. To leave your home, your homeland, your family, your customs to travel a deadly path to a foreign land where you don’t speak the language, be met with resistance and arrest... to risk your life to hopefully make it to the USA... THAT IS NOT A CHOICE!!!! People are leaving because they have NO choice. Who wants this??? Nobody wants to choose death. They are fleeing violence and unlivable conditions. _ Just because there seem to be options doesn’t mean there is choice- for those who are privileged to walk freely, in comfort and safety- this may seem like a bad choice- but it’s an illusion of choice. No one wants to put their children in harms way. The U.S. is a well resourced country, there is no good reason for anyone to die in the custody of border patrol. Neglecting the dire medical needs of a 7 year-old baby- that’s a choice. To see someone else as beneath you and mistreat them because they are from another country- that’s a choice. To deny basic human rights- that’s a choice. To spray tear gas on women and children at the border- that’s a choice. To physically pull children apart from their families and separate and deport parents with no intention or plan for reuniting- that’s a choice. Detaining 15,000 migrant children in camps- that’s a choice. To blame immigrants for all of your problems- that’s a choice. To punish immigrants escaping peril and seeking asylum, that’s a choi

Repost from @thelingerieaddict . This resonates deeply with me. I remember when I first became aware of my privilege and the oppression that so many people (people of color, women, trans folx, etc) face that I never had to think about. And I remember learning that if I wanted to change the world for the better, I had to be willing to challenge people and systems in ways that often make others uncomfortable. Some people interpret this as “not nice” because they don’t want to be challenged and have their hypocrisy pointed out. # “Niceness” and “getting along” with people were once qualities that I saw as some of the highest values that one could have. And while I still think that these things are “nice,” there are many more important qualities to develop. Every person on the front lines of working towards equal rights throughout history and presently, has faced charges of being “divisive,” and “unkind” (these are often the least severe things one can be called when it is aimed at people from marginalized identities). # Feminists and/or anti-racist activists face harsh criticism for not “doing it the right way” when we advocate for equal rights and human dignity. But usually this comes from people who have no history of fighting for equality. And from those who have the privilege not to think about these issues because they aren’t oppressed by them. We need more people of privilege committed to freedom, justice, and equality rather than “niceness.” Because what is niceness really worth, if it’s really just an excuse to preserve the status quo?

Love this piece by my friend and incredible artivist (artist and activist) Favianna Rodriguez ( @Favianna1 )!!! I am so honored to have this piece in my home. I greatly respect Favianna’s work, as an artist and an activist, and deeply appreciate how much of herself she puts into all of it with great transparency. She’s also having a holiday sale right now...details below! 2nd photo is @osopepatrisse , @favianna1 and I heading down to the border in solidarity with immigrant communities. # About this piece called “Balance”: “I created this print series in honor of my commitment to work less, and to stop judging myself in relation to how productive I am. Instead, I desire a life of balance - a life that is equal in play and work.  Like many other high achievers, I work all the time. 12-15 hour days are normal for me. Although I really love doing art, I also want to learn how to have down time, engage in more pleasureable activities, and be more present for those I love. I feel guilty when I'm not working on my never ending list of stuff. I make up all kinds of excuses for why I need to work late night and weekends. Everything feels urgent. I grew up seeing my parents work 2-3 jobs, always in the hustle - and it's such an ingrained part of who I am. But I imagine another future for myself. I want to break free of the mental limits of our productivity oriented society. I want to make more room for nothingness, for joy, for pleasure and for lots of fucking.” # “There’s still time to get your loved ones one of a kind art works! Shop link is in @favianna1 bio (bit.ly/faviannastore ) Please put in your orders no later than Mon. Dec. 17th for guaranteed pre-holiday delivery. And please choose priority shipping. "Breaking the Habit Of Being Yourself: How To Lose Your Mind and Create a New One" by Dr. Joe Dispenza # My silly face is a play on the trippy cover of this book that looks like a Pink Floyd music video and also the awe of self-transformation that I've been going through in the past few months. @JLoveCalderon , who recommended this book to me, has been a light in my life. Through working together in coaching, I have been challenged in ways that I never knew I needed to be, and my life, my career, my art and my activism has blossomed in beautiful ways in just a few months. I will write more in-depth about this at a later point. :) # Much of what JLove and I talk about is learning to let go of old stories that we tell ourselves about who we are. These stories keep us stuck, recreating the same life conditions that often limit us and return us to negative beliefs that actually feel comfortable for us. We believe them to be a part of us because they have been for so long. But they don't need to be. # This book definitely taps into much of what JLove and I have been working on, and in large part, that is why I appreciate it. I have yet to do the meditations that are a big portion of the book, but the information itself I have found incredibly valuable. One part that has truly blown my mind is the "observer effect" in quantum physics, and how Dr. Dispenza connects to one's ability to manifest and create new realities for ourselves (can be seen in the second slide I posted). # As my consciousness has grown around systems of oppression, I have had resistance to some of the language and ways of being of the self-help community. While I do believe that many of us are capable of immense growth and finding our own happiness, there MUST be a recognition that systems of oppression undeniably DO affect people's lived realities. Self-help is great, but if we are ever to reach a greater level of consciousness and spiritual awakening, we must use our own empowerment to disman

Mourning dead bigots by pretending like they weren’t responsible for the catastrophic loss of human life is the making of modern-day Confederate statues. # Why don’t we just tell the truth now, and maybe we won’t have to tear those statues down in 50 years? This kind of de-politicization of an actual politician is a privilege afforded to only those who have the privilege to not have family and friends or themselves have been impacted by Bush Sr. (or whoever else’s) bigoted policies and beliefs. # The legacy of ones personality traits should be buried by the marginalized bodies stacked impossibly high from your hateful policies. "By the time he left office, about 100,000 people had died of AIDS here in the United States, about more than a million had died globally," recalls Steven Thrasher. The Bush administration also created a refugee camp at Guantanamo Bay in 1991 where Haitian refugees were tested for HIV and sterilized by the U.S. government without their knowledge. "No One Is Illegal: Fighting Racism and State Violence on the U.S.-Mexico Border" by #JustinAkersChacĂłn and #MikeDavis (this and other books currently 50% off at @haymarketbooks ) # This 357 page book is incredibly eye-opening, and provides a sweeping entry-point into understanding the current conversation about the U.S.-Mexico border that has deep roots in history and U.S. attempts to control labor, and thus capital. # As a person living in California, I found it very useful to learn about the long and brutal labor history in this state and how the legacy of racial and immigrant oppression has served to siphon money away from the poor and working class, into the hands of the elite. The close relationship of racist vigilantes, the KKK, the police (ever heard "Cops and Klan go hand-in-hand?"), and business owners that serve(d) to break up chances at solidarity of workers in order to organize for better wages and conditions continues to this day. And the particular vulnerability of the undocumented worker provides an easily exploitable upper-hand for those who want to drive the cost of labor downwards. With the threat and reality of deportation looming, it becomes very hard to form a united front. And as racism and nativism is stoked, it prevents (and always has) a true united working class that could more effectively work together to fundamentally restructure the economy of the United States. # Republicans AND Democrats have been guilty of dehumanizing policies that continue to exploit the labor of immigrants (and especially undocumented immigrants), destroying the lives of people being deported and those losing their lives crossing the border in more severe climates (which was intentional on the part of the US. govt). And so many of the people attempting to cross into the U.S. are doing so as a result of fucked up international U.S. policies that have widened inequality and brought unnecessary war abroad. Mostly in the name of money and power (aka capitalism

Repost from @moustachemannyc - “This week I hiked through the foothills of Altadena, CA with @mattmcgorry in search of Owen Brown’s gravesite. Owen was instrumental in his father John Brown’s abolitionist activities. He killed one of the pro-slavery thugs in the so-called “Pottawatomie Massacre,” fought in the Bleeding Kansas wars to secure Kansas as a free state, and followed his father and brothers to Harper’s Ferry, where he gathered intelligence on slaveholders in the area. He was the only Brown to make it out of Harper’s Ferry alive, leading four other raiders through the woods in an escape that lasted weeks. He went on to serve as an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War and moved to California with his sister Ruth and brother Jason. He spent his last years living in the hills of Altadena in a log cabin with Jason (standing on the right in the last photo, next to Owen). When he died in 1889, a crowd of 2,000 people (nearly the entire population of Pasadena) marched from his funeral up to the gravesite. Ten years later a stone marker was placed on the site, reading “Owen Brown, Son of John Brown, The Liberator. Died Jan. 9, 1889. Aged 64 Y’rs.” Over the next hundred years, admirers of #OwenBrown and his father would hike up to his grave and pay their respects. Opponents made their way up there as well. The marker was thrown down the hill so many times and dragged back up by supporters that a stone base was eventually added to it. In 2004 it was removed again and remained missing until it was found in 2012 by the artist Ian White. Ian’s father, by the way, is the legendary artist Charles White, who has a retrospective at the MoMA now. Apparently #CharlesWhite depicted only two white men in his artwork over the course of his career. #JohnBrown was one of them. Today Owen Brown’s stone marker is hidden in a secure location until the community can figure out how best to protect it. A hollow replica was installed by residents last year in a small park in t

The holidays are upon us! Thankstaking is tomorrow! # White folx, WILL YOU COMMIT to having bold conversations about race with the other white people that you are spending the holidays with??? *Link in bio for tools to help with this!* # The call has been out for a long time. Folx of color have been asking white people to have these conversations for forever. When we don’t engage, our silence is approval. # White folks...we NEED to be having bold and uncomfortable conversations with each other about race. Learning how to have difficult but necessary conversations are an extraordinarily important skill for building our best lives and also for creating a world that is free from oppression. And like anything else that we are not practiced in, it will take diligence and commitment to do so in the best possible way. # So again, I am asking YOU...will you commit? Will you commit to learning more about how racism operates in our everyday lives? Will you commit to leaning into discomfort, even when you don’t feel like you have the perfect answers? And will you commit to the practice of having effective dialogue about these issues? # I’m beyond thrilled that I was able to partner with @colorofchange and #ShowingUpForRacialJustice in this, and hope it serves as a useful resource as well for people of color to point well-intentioned white folx towards. # Go to bit.ly/boldconversations to learn more, (or click the link in my bio) and text SOS to 82623 for helpful tips and talking points to help you easily navigate your bold conversation about race. # With love & liberation. ❤️

This holiday season, I'm challenging fellow white people to use their time with family to have difficult conversations around the dinner table. I'm talking about race. Race is a social construct, but racism is real. It's time for white people to show up and talk about its impact on Black people and other marginalized groups. Join me, @ColorOfChange and #SURJ as we dismantle white supremacy. . Repost from @theeggisyou # “Had a bit of a setback yesterday. Something hit me hard reminding me that my feelings and emotions around some things were still very raw and that I was still hurting and that even hearing of similar suffering sent me back to my own experiences and gave me flashbacks. But then I was reminded of this artwork by @frizzkidart. Healing isn’t a linear process. How many times I’ve said and written that! But yesterday I started going into a spiral thinking I sat with this for a year the next year I focused on turning to solutions (therapy, medication and also looking at what I can do to change things), I started freaking out that if two years of creating intentional space for healing wasn’t enough - how long will it take? But I know healing isn’t linear. So it’s okay if I have days I’m not okay. It’s okay if I relapsed, or had flashbacks, or felt intense emotions around something, yes it’s still raw but that’s okay, because maybe one day it won’t be. Maybe one day I’ll be able to hear about certain things that triggered me with empathy for myself and others. Maybe one day i’ll let the emotions pass without panic and tell myself it’s okay. I’m okay! . I saw this come up for so many people the last couple of days. Sending you so much love. As @yassmin_a said to me “we’ll get through this”. Inshallah we will. . . . #cultureofcare #healingisnotlinear #healingisaprocess #itsokaynottobeokay “

Repost and caption below from @bodyposipanda # “Don't get it twisted, there is no weight where people stop being worthy of respect. Point blank. End of story. To anyone who wants to put a weight limit on body positivity and say that some people are taking it "too far" - what you're really saying is that after a certain size people should be made to feel like they aren't valuable, like they aren't worthy of respect or dignity. Because THAT is what body positivity is trying to teach people, that every body is worthy of respect. And creating a cut-off point based on your own internalised fatphobia goes against everything body positivity stands for as a movement. And I hear you - what about people's health? Well, in short: - Health is a million times more multi-dimensional than weight and weight alone and you will never know someone's health just from looking at them. - Putting an 'as long as you're healthy' requirement on body positivity is ableist and exclusionary. - Someone's health isn't a marker of whether they're worthy of respect either. Seriously. - Mental health is health too, and fatphobia & weight stigma are proven to cause negative health outcomes in and of themselves. - Stop using 'health concern' as an excuse for not wanting to see fat bodies. It's tired and we see through it. There is no too fat where people stop being worthy of respect, stop being valuable, or should be made to hate themselves. And if you believe that there is, then you really don't believe in body positivity at all. 💜💙💚🌈🌞 P.s. this quote obviously applies to all genders and not only women 🌻 • [Image description: a Tumblr post from thedefenderrs that reads "Let fat women be happy. "Rising Strong: How the Ability to Reset Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead" by @BreneBrown # Just recently, I was with a friend of mine grabbing some food during what we had determined would be a chill, early bedtime, night. We met a group of fun people who asked him to get drinks and then announced to the group that "we are going to get a drink!" Knowing that we had agreed to make it a relaxed night, I did not feel like that was the vibe we were about to be in. And knowing myself...I'm never really a "1 drink, hang out for an hour person." If I am out, then I am OUT. While my friend had asked me what I wanted to do, I tossed it back to him, to which he said he was down to go with the flow. I knew that we wanted to be up at a reasonable time the next morning, and in my mind, knew that this would likely prevent that from happening. # The next morning, we got up late and I was tired from having a late (and fun!) night out. It made our original plans a bit harder. It wasn't until maybe two days later, that I realized I was holding on to some anger and resentment about how things went down. Using a tool from the book, I said "this is the story that I'm making up in my head," and told him that in the moment of deciding to go out, I felt like he didn't really care what I wanted to do. And my own fear of coming off as "needy" or "having too many needs" prevented me from being fully expressed about what I wanted, or asking for a minute to discuss our plans more fully. A lifetime of conditioning as a man has told me that having "too many needs" is the opposite of what men are supposed to be. We are "supposed to be" self-sufficient and stoic, not vulnerable. # When I fully realized what was happening in me, I was able to express to him the shame I felt in having a need to "talk it out," not feeling able to express my needs, and the additional shame of holding onto resentment when it came to one of my best friends. Our conversation blossomed, and as wit

It’s important to celebrate when we accomplish something together when are in the Movement for the long haul. We know that voting is just one tool, and that mobilizing, base building and organizing is truly where the power to create change is. I want to start by acknowledging and honoring Black Women who have continued to trailblaze in their bold and powerful leadership. I am blessed to have powerful Black Women in my life with whom I share this journey toward justice together. Thank you to the phenomenal nonbinary leaders of color who are leading the way! We also have our first ever Somali-American and Muslim Woman in Congress. So many amazing firsts… * * Also want to acknowledge in my hometown in LA we ousted Sheriff McDonnell and now have Alex Villanueva, who has made significant promises to community groups and we plan to hold him accountable. S/o to my comrade @osopepatrisse and so many others in this huge effort! * * CALLING-IN WHITE PEOPLE, especially white women *continued in comments* We must, must, must do better ya’ll. We must dust off the indoctrination of white supremacy and truly overstand our humanity is at stake until we SHOW the FUCK UP and work toward a vision of true freedom and Liberation for all people. We gotta Do.The.Work. * * Shout out to all badass Black, Latinx women, indigenous, nonbinary, and explicitly anti-racist white women organizers and leaders. I see you. I acknowledge you. Tomorrow is the day to vote in midterm elections (see below for voter guide!!!). For those who are eligible to vote, it is an important tool in fighting for the change that we want. But don't get it twisted, it is far from being the only way to make change. And it is important that we be organizing and building collective power to create the changes that our country so desperately needs. # @BYP100 has put together a progressive voter guide for Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Texas, Washington D.C. and Wisconsin. Friends, next Tuesday, November 6th are the midterm elections. (Please see @kendrick38 ‘s IG story highlights for a progressive voter guide in LA and follow him for a lot of other voting-related information) # White supremacist terrorism continues to rise in various forms such as the murder of 11 Jews at the Tree of Life Synagogue, the murder of two Black people, Maurice Stallard and Vickie Jones in a Kroger, the increased militarization at the border in response to a refugee crisis, and countless other incidents. # Voting is an important tool in creating the change we want. For those that are eligible, it is our MINIMUM commitment to civic responsibility. Organizing, building collective political power is an absolute necessity (and always has been) in order to win in the future and for the victories that movements for justice already have. Remember, the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts were won through organizing, not voting. And still, who is in office can change our ability to organize. # For those of us that are white, have class privilege, and have the life conditions that allow us to choose much of how we spend our time, we MUST UP OUR POLITICAL ENGAGEMENT. How far into white supremacy will you allow this country to sink before you decide to become more involved? It is time to show up, be uncomfortable and have the courage to fight like hell for the principles that we espouse. (Image reposed from @kifahshah )

For Halloween yesterday, I went as "White Fragility." If you are unfamiliar with the term, it was coined by Dr. Robin DiAngelo, a sociologist who used it to describe the extreme resistance that white people have in talking about our participation in racism. Because white people have had the privilege of not having to think about race very much in our own lives, we get highly defensive when people have tell us that something we are doing has had a racist impact, despite what we believe are our good intentions. As a conversation starter, this costume was effective in the ways that I had hoped it would be. # Dr. DiAngelo's book, "White Fragility," is one that I would highly recommend, particularly for white liberals and progressives. She also has a 17 page document online (pages that I've included in this post) that you can find here: https://bit.ly/2fua7dz # From a New Yorker interview about the book/her work: "DiAngelo addresses her book mostly to white people, and she reserves her harshest criticism for white liberals like herself (and like me), whom she sees as refusing to acknowledge their own participation in racist systems. “I believe,” she writes, “that white progressives cause the most daily damage to people of color.” Not only do these people fail to see their complicity, but they take a self-serving approach to ongoing anti-racism efforts: “To the degree that white progressives think we have arrived, we will put our energy into making sure that others see us as having arrived.” Even the racial beliefs and responses that feel authentic or well-intentioned have likely been programmed by white supremacy, to perpetuate white supremacy. Whites profit off of an American political and economic system that showers advantages on racial “winners” and oppresses racial “losers.” Yet, DiAngelo writes, white people cling to the notion of racial innocence, a form of weaponized denial that positions black people as the “havers” of race and the guardians of racial knowled

Shut down Rikers Island, close it now! . The bedrock principle of the American legal system is that we are all presumed innocent until proven guilty. Then why is it that 79% of those detained in New York are people who have not been convicted of a crime!? . Pre-trial detention means thousands of black, brown, LGBTQ, differently-abled, and poor people are treated as guilty simply because they can’t afford to be free. Poverty is NOT a crime. . @MassBailOut began the process of freeing women and children who haven’t been convicted of a crime, but can’t afford freedom. Your freedom should not depend on how much money you have in the bank, your zip code, your race, gender, or orientation. . By donating you are helping put families back together. 80% of women in jails are mothers. When we remove mothers from society, we harm families, opportunities, and communities. Your donations matter . Amplify on social media! follow @massbailout @essie4justice @WPA_NYC #MassBailOut #EndMoneyBail #CloseRikers

The opioid epidemic which is ravaging the country at the moment is killing people in record numbers . Ohio, which is a state that has been worst affected by poverty and drug epidemics in recent years has been hit particularly hard. The “war on drugs” tactic which has been employed by the state does nothing to address or solve this terrible problem except to criminalize those most vulnerable (disproportionately targeting poor and working class white folx and people of colour). The Neighborhood Safety and Drug Treatment Amendment (Issue 1) aims to reduce the number of people in state prison for low-level, nonviolent crimes and put the money to better use by directing future savings to drug treatment and victim services. . “We know the solutions and it is not incarceration, it is care, we need to implement systems of care for everyone” . This amendment will stop the criminalization of drug use by changing low level nonviolent drug possession from felonies to misdemeanors diverting people from the monumental psychological and socially stigmatizing damage of a prison sentence. It stops the parole to prison pipeline by authorizing earned time credit incentives to people in prison to rehabilitate themselves to reduce repeat offending. All the tens of millions of dollars estimated to be generated using this programme will be directed to local drug treatment programs and help people recover from all the traumas associated with drug use. . This issue is not Ohio specific. The “war on drugs” tactic has been employed across the country for many years and is detrimental to the health of our society specifically poor working class white folx and people of color . TO HELP. Go to surjaction.org/ohio and sign up to the phone bank, talk to voters about Issue 1 and get them to the polls. Find the groups helping to spread information and organize: @ohorganizing @ohiostudents @harmreductionoh @averyxq @jlovecalderon who have all been doing fantastic work. "Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire" by #DeepaKumar # This book provides a history of anti-Islam ideology and tactics and how they have been perpetuated by the West for forever. Even today, mainstream rhetoric from the left is weak enough that it cannot effectively combat the Islamophobia so persistent in our national ideology used to justify imperialism, colonization, and other forms of violence. # When John McCain died, the white, non-Muslim left was hailed him as an anti-racist saint for disagreeing with a woman who had said that Obama was an Arab and a Muslim and, therefore, could not be trusted. McCain's response was that Obama was a Christian, while doing nothing to push back on the idea that Arabs and Muslims were not to be trusted. With very little education to act as an antidote to the Islamophobia, most of us are likely to miss how deeply problematic a response, such as McCain's is, even when it is hailed as a progressive act. # The racist, Islamophobic double-standard is very real. The term "terrorist" is assigned to any Arab person who commits acts of violence; they are held up as examples of why Islam is "inherently flawed." Yet, one is more likely to be killed in a mass shooting by a white Christian man, but these acts are never called "terrorism" or seen as testament to the flawed nature of Christianity. We live in a country dominated by white, Christian men who fight to roll back reproductive rights -endangering countless people- and discount the voices of survivors of the epidemic of sexual violence, but we do not hear about the impact of Christian fundamentalism in the mainstream media. From the Crusades to the Iraq war, notions of Christian supremacy have justified the loss of millions of innocent lives under the guise of "civilizing" and "liberating" Muslims, yet conveniently evades the label of "terrorism" because of the magical white cloak of invisibility. It is imperative that those of us who are not Muslims educate ourselves on these is

"John Brown Abolitionist: The Man Who Killed Slavery, Sparked the Civil War, and Seeded Civil Rights" by David S. Reynolds # The way that we are taught history in the United States, teaches us to be racist. It teaches us how to overvalue the contributions of white people and undervalue the contributions of People of Color. This book is a powerful antidote to the stale history taught in our schools systems that is divorced from the present day systems of oppression and struggles for liberation. # John Brown was a name known widely before the abolition of slavery, but a name that has largely been erased. I, like most of us, learned a false history; that the Civil War was launched by a benevolent Abraham Lincoln and was fought by the North to free enslaved people. In school, I learned barely anything about the resistance of enslaved people. I learned nothing about Nat Turner, who escaped from slavery, and the violent rebellion that he led which struck terror into the hearts of the pro-slavery Southerners, or the ripple effect that this had, including inspiring the white abolitionist, John Brown, to take violent measures in order to strike a deadly blow to the institution of slavery. # It makes sense to me, why we are taught history this way by our mostly white teachers. Believing that the North was "good" and non-racist, while the South was "bad" and racist, allows most white Northerners (present-day liberals) to feel a sense of moral superiority over the white South (present-day conservatives) without actually doing much of anything. If the white South (conservatives) are the ones upholding racism, then we don't have a responsibility in working to see and dismantle it in the our own backyards and our own lives. # The truth is, Abraham Lincoln (like most white abolitionists of the day) had deeply racist beliefs and was PUSHED to an abolitionist stance by abolitionist organizing. Eventually, he came to espouse abolition, but believed that Africans should be sent

Brett Kavanaugh is the symptom. Rape culture and patriarchy is the disease. Same with Trump. Same with the rapists outted by the #MeToo movement (not to mention white supremacy, capitalism, etc). Men, if you actually care...listen to women, and the women on the front lines of the anti-sexist, anti-rape culture, feminist movement and GET TO WORK. And if you’re a man, wondering if I’m talking about YOU, I can assure you that I AM. You need to be a man that OTHER MEN know stands against rape culture. That other men know won’t let this shit slide. That other men can come to you with their questions about what to do to be a part of the solution. We all have circles of influence, and we need to influence them. We don’t deserve credit for not being a Kavanaugh, a Trump, or a Weinstein. The only way to change this world to make it safer for women and girls is to be preemptive and do the shit that you see almost no other men doing. When you see lots of women in your life re-posting an article or a meme about rape culture, but not men doing it, YOU DO IT. Violence against women is *MEN’S* VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN OVER 99% OF THE TIME. This is OUR job to fix. Guys, next time you hear liberal men complaining about Kavanaugh, ask “what are YOU doing to end rape culture?”

“The Body Is Not An Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love” by Sonya Renee Taylor ( @sonyareneetaylor ) # I meaaaaannnnn...I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more glorious book cover than this one. Judging a book by its cover might not normally be the best idea, but you’d be more than okay to do it in this case. At a little over 100 pages, it is packed with beautiful writing, thoughtful questions to inspire change, and just an incredible articulation or what is needed for us to embrace our own radical self-love, and to create a world in which it exists for all bodies. @sonyareneetaylor is also a great person to follow on Instagram and her website TheBodyIsNotAnApology.com is a great resource for those on this journey. # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads #mcgreads

Last week was the birthday of my incredible friend, freedom fighter, and lead organizer of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles (@blmlosangeles ), Dr. Melina Abdullah (@docmellymel ). This joyous photo was taken during her birthday last year (Happy Bday Melina!!!). For the past few years I’ve had the great honor of working alongside her, and being inspired by her fierce commitment to liberation. (**action this Friday in LA at bottom of caption**) # Like many Black organizers in the past and of the present, Melina is being targeted for her political actions in an effort to intimidate and silence her through political prosecution. Like Angela Davis Assata Shakur, many member of the Black Panther Party, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and many others, the state is leveraging their power in order to squash the potential for justice and equality of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color). # They are charging Melina with 8 COUNTS in relation to her attendance of the weekly Police Commission meetings, dating as far back to 7/25/17. # **THIS FRIDAY, at 9am, we need everyone who is able, to show up in support of Melina at her hearing. 210 W Temple St, Dept 48.**

“Body Respect: What Conventional Health Books Get Wrong, Leave Out, and Just Plain Fail To Undertand about Weight” by #LindaBacon & #LucyAphramor # I need you to read this, and to consider it closely. Please. There are a number of ENORMOUSLY missing components from the way that we are taught about health in our society. For those of us seeking to improve our own mental, physical, and spiritual health to those of us that work in the health and fitness industry, and for people that are medical professionals...we have been fooled. All of us. # Understanding the Health At Every Size (#HAES) movement is absolutely imperative to creating a world where people can be their best, most whole and the healthiest versions of themselves. Learning about how we’ve been sold the absolute bullshit of how “obesity causes disease” and the ways that these lies prop up multi-billion dollar industries is essential. Without understanding this, we will continue to spew and justify fatphobic garbage, and we are absolutely complicit in the detriment of people’s physical, mental, and spiritual health as a result. I am not being hyperbolic. Even ost health professionals simply do not understand the ways that systemic oppression (of race, class, size, gender, etc) impacts the health of their clients/patients. For anyone who says that they care about the health and well-being of others, I implore you to learn about, think about, and implement these ideas into your practice. **continued in comments** # I can see the trolls lining up to give me the same tired arguments that I see tenfold when people of size post the same things that I do. So let me dissuade you real quick. I was a personal trainer for 10 years. I’ve written for Men’s Health and Men’s Fitness, have won a natural bodybuilding competition at 5.5% bodyfat, have deadlifted 576lb in competition and have been nationally ranked in the deadlift in 3 weight classes in a single year. Last month I got the chance to have a conversation on @Unapologeticamc with @AishaTyler, @LaverneCox and Robin Weigert. Toxic masculinity affects men, women and gender non-conforming people. The socialization of what it means to be a “real man” is harmful to the full development of men and not to mention negatively impacts how men view and treat women. It’s beyond time to redefine what it means to be a man. . If we do not work to stop the dehumanization of women and trans folk we will continue sacrificing large parts of ourselves and our humanity. We must do better! Now! . Listen, Interrupt, Amplify, and Unlearn. Listen to the wisdom of women, especially of women of color, and gender non-conforming people, as they have been at the forefront of this global movement. . #unapologetic #toxicmasculinity #smashthepatriarchy #aishatyler #lavernecox #ACallToMen #ManEnough #SURJConnector

"Landwhale: On turning Insults Into Nicknames, Why Body Image Is Hard, and How Diets Can Kiss My Ass' by Jes Baker ( @themilitantbaker ) # I greatly admire Jes's vulnerability, and it made me reflect on my own expression of vulnerability in my writing and activism. I think this is the power of seeing someone speak their truth in such a candid way. It allows us to self-reflect and take stock of how we may be capable of going further and opening up more than we previously imagined that we possibly could. I seek to do this for other people in sharing my own struggles and messiness and always appreciate when people are willing to "go there." I really enjoyed this book, not just as a look into the mind and life of a fierce Body Positive activist, but as a story that covers a great deal more ground, about relationships, family, trauma, and more, and all with great humor and wit. # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads #mcgreads

Last 50/50 day I had the honor of having a scintillating dialogue with the great Kimberlé Crenshaw. Kimberlé is the person introduced the term “intersectional" to feminism theory which has had a huge influence on my life/activism and also changed how we view oppression and social injustice around the world. . 50/50 Day is an annual global conversation on gender equity which had over 35000 events happening in over 60 countries with thousands of people across the world from India to Nigeria and beyond. The goal is #GettingTo5050, an equal and gender-balanced society that is beneficial for everyone. My commitment is to continue to work daily to interrupt patriarchy and sexism wherever and however I can, knowing that I have, and I will make mistakes but that’s no excuse to do nothing (and noting that perfectionism is a behavior of white supremacist culture). . Go to whyipledge5050.org to watch talks, films and conversations to educate yourself on gender equity, write a pledge at whyipledge5050.org to commit to an action that will help push us closer to #gettingto5050. (I want to acknowledge that while I support 50/50 goals of gender equity that I support gender non-conforming people who may not feel seen in the equation). . #letitripple #genderequity #genderpaygap #5050day #SURJConnector #IntersectionalFeminist

Listen up, on April 15th, 7 people lost their lives in Lee Correctional Institution during an avoidable riot which happened as a result of inhumane living conditions. Overcrowded conditions are commonplace across the US due to a penal system which is based on profit, greed, racism and a lack of respect for human life. . That is why incarcerated women and men & gender non-confirming people across the country are striking until September 9th, to demand humane living conditions, access to rehabilitation and the end of modern day slavery. . You can help in many ways; educate yourself by reading the strike demands and learning about the racist history of the US penal system, donate to the official strike fund, promote on social media by using the hashtags #prisonstrike, join or organize a solidarity rally. . The prison industrial complex is at the core of white supremacy. We have a choice and chance to do better. . “In its unprecedented expansion, hyperincarceration is one of the major institutions within which racism operates structurally in American society today....by imprisoning masses of black and Latino youth, destroy the fabric of communities of color and undercut their capacity to regenerate massive democratic movements” (Abu-Jamal and Fernandez, 2014). . #prisonstrike #August21 #endwhitesupremacy #prisonreform #10demands #SURJConnectors

Colin Kaepernick is the face of Nike’s 30th anniversary campaign. I believe that freedom work MUST come with sacrifice. The goal is not to sacrifice out of guilt or for the sake of sacrifice itself (this can be martyrdom). But in attempting to fight oppression, there will inevitably be many choices we make where the anti-oppressive option will come with sacrifice. If you are willing to make no sacrifices, then you are not working for freedom. Or as Frederick Douglass said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” #ImWithKap @kaepernick7

"Lovable Racists, Magical Negroes, and White Messiahs" by David Ikard @blkeducator # This book is a very astute criticism of how notions of white superiority and Black inferiority (aka white supremacy) are unconsciously fused to our belief systems through all media, but especially film, television, and art. I first became familiar with the "magical negro" trope a few years ago in an article written by @feministajones called "This Isn't The 'Magic' We Are Talking About" (which I'd recommend Googling). It opened my eyes to the ways that white supremacy is taught to all people who consume this content without a critical lens, and especially to white people. A film doesn't need to be D.W. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation" to reinforce white supremacy. Even many of the films, made by white directors, that make us (white people) feel like we are having positive feelings about Black folks can and often are still be teaching us white supremacy culture in insidious ways.  # I do not believe that ill-intentions are what cause these narratives to persist. In fact, despite our good intentions as white people, we often produce and reproduce these harmful narratives without really questioning them. Without trying to understand more deeply what messages have been taught to us, and in turn the beliefs that we have been socialized into, we will continue to perpetuate the narratives of white superiority and Black inferiority (white supremacy). And ultimately, falling back on “good intentions” rather than the racist impact that we have is a luxury born out of white privilege. This is why we must be ANTI-racist in our education, our life, and our practices of solidarity.  If we rest on the notions that we are "good people" because we don't believe ourselves to be racist, then we will never be capable of fully recognizing the pervasiveness of white supremacy (even in white liberal Hollywood) or of interrupting it.  And without both of those things, we will continue to miss the mark of two

This is so important. We all have communities that we need to be allies to when we look at how we occupy various privileges. Unfortunately, the burden of this work often falls on those with the least privilege, whereas cisgender, white, heterosexual men with class privilege often do the least with the most. We need to do better. # **original post from @ignantintellect ** Repost from @decolonizing_fitness , a great account to follow. - “Allyship is not an identity. Allyship is a moment-by-moment doing. We are all momentary allies. We get things right in specific instances. We aren't broadly allies all the time. Allyship is not a noun. Allyship is not a social construction like race or gender. . Allyship is a verb. One cannot say "I am an ally". One can say "I do allyship to the best of my ability. Which means I get it right sometimes and I get it wrong sometimes”. Allyship is NEVER determined by the "ally". It is ALWAYS determined by the person/group most marginalized/systematized.” ~Zerandrian S. I am eternally grateful for having discovered White People 4 Black Lives ( @wp4bl ), Alliance of White Anti-Racists Everywhere (AWARE-LA) and Showing Up For Racial Justice (SURJ) a few years ago. I can safely say that being a part of these organizations and working with our People of Color-led solidarity orgs has been absolutely essential to my growth as an activist. # As white people, we need to take responsibility for our journey of anti-racism. Yes, we need to learn from the endless information that POC have put into the world about these issues (and follow/amplify activists of color on social media), but we can’t sit around waiting for POC to hand us the tools to be better allies. Expecting POC to have to personally educate us while they’re also experiencing racism is an enormous and unfair expectation that comes from a mindset of privilege. (More on this in comments section below) # Repost from @wp4bl - WP4BL is one part of a three-part chorus of white anti-racist work along with #AWARELA Saturday Dialogues and The UnMasking Whiteness Institute. Synergistically developing community-building, consciousness-raising and self-reflecting practices. “Conflict Is Not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility, and the Duty of Repair” by Sarah Schulman @schulmanny # This book was incredible. My friend @melissvargas invited me to see Schulman do a talk when her book came out at @skylightbooks and I was fascinated by the complex yet important topics that were being discussed. I struggled greatly with figuring out which excerpts to include in this post because I put tabs in so many places, and because many of these topics and the way that they are discussed are so complicated, that I didn't want things to be taken out of context. # "Conflict Is Not Abuse" addresses some imperative subjects that need to be a point of consideration and learning within social justice spaces. I found myself challenged, disagreeing at times, but ultimately feeling more enlightened for having exposed myself to these concepts, that often go minimally challenged in activist spaces. Living in a gray area, in a society that pushes everyone to see things as binary, is difficult. # But it's an essential part of the work of creating social change, liberation work, and in conflict transformation. I wouldn't recommend this book as a starting place for people that don't have much of an understanding of privilege, systemic oppression, and power dynamics. But for those who do, I believe that it will offer some valuable insights, even for the seasoned activist. I can say that my friend @dahliaseed, who is a badass activist and organizer that I admire greatly, felt like their mind was blown as well.  Plus, bell hooks wrote a blurb on the back. Repost from @shaunking - “Swipe over. First images are of a Black father who killed a man for trying to rape his daughter. Second images are of a white man who killed his own two daughters, and his pregnant wife. This disparity is no accident. It’s how Media advances racism. We must demand better. Images and text from @authorqasimrashid “ # From Matt- Perfect example of how we learn racism in ways that are so subtle to most of us white folks that we barely notice. And that “barely noticing” is called normalization. And it’s how the culture around us influences us, training us to have anti-Black bias, and then we put that out into the world again, like the people that chose the pictures to use for these news stories. If you’re not noticing racism, you are unconsciously absorbing it, and then you are putting it out into the world again without even consciously doing it. And guess what that does to your beliefs about who is dangerous, trustworthy, redeemable, etc?

Here, Tatyana describes her definition of what an “ally” is. It is important for those us that are white to recognize that allyship is not a self-appointed badge that we wear. Whether or not we are allies can only be determined by the people that we seek to be in solidarity with, and is based on our ACTIONS not just our beliefs. It doesn’t really matter if you say you “believe in equality” if you’re not pushing yourself out of your comfort zone to make that a reality. Most white liberals and progressives say they want racial equity, yet so few of us are willing to put in the actual work. No white person is born knowing how to be an ally, but we have to understand that it requires consistent, intentional work, discomfort, listening to POC activists on the solidarity they’re asking for, and often times some sacrifice to make this a reality. Let’s stop patting ourselves on the back for being “less racist” than “those people” and look at how our daily thoughts and actions line up with our beliefs. If we’re only talking about racism/anti-racism around People of Color, then we are missing out on the important work that we need to be doing, which is educating other white people. # Repost from @tlynnfaz - “My thoughts on allyship, particularly white allies. It means to me that you don't just do the work when you are around POC and black people. It's a constant work. The pieces that I created here were during my residency in Seattle with @amplifierart where I interviewed several residents about living in white spaces. The final pieces read "Look Past Your Liberalism to See Your Own Racism", "Not Your Token Black Person", and "Engage Others Past Their Visual Identities”. “

Think about it. Deeply. Especially if you’re not someone that’s been told to lose weight “for your health”. Think about how you’d feel looking at a thin woman that is a model eating french fries in public vs a fat woman doing the same thing. What judgements might you feel and blame would you assign and how would it be different? Most of what we think we know about “obesity” and it’s relation to health is plain wrong and deeply rooted in anti-fat bias (after all, there are billions of dollars to be made from it). And yet we excuse our prejudice as “concern” for someone’s health. But there are much greater health concerns being a fat person living in a fatphobic culture than can be “helped” by additional fatphobia. Additional shame, blame and systemic marginalization are not the answer. # The pages after the first slide are from “Health At Every Size” by Dr. Linda Bacon and may just blow your damn mind. I know they did for me despite a decade of being a personal trainer. #HAES

Screenshot captions after the 1st graphic are from me. I constantly hear people praising weight loss. But we need to think about those “compliments” more deeply and critically. # Repost from @bodyimage_therapist - “Usually, the word 'judgement' brings to mind something negative. However, judgements are judgements. There may be more acceptable judgements, or more taboo judgements. For example, it's more acceptable to say 'oh wow you've lost weight, good job!' and more taboo to say 'you've gained weight, what happened?'. Just because one is more socially acceptable, doesn't mean the praised-based 'positive judgement' serves the person. Whether it be praising or scolding, judgements create a hierarchical interaction. It is implied that the person doing the judging has more ability than the person being judged. If a person thrives off praise, praise will always be based on the values system of the person dishing it out. . . If you've noticed someone's weight change - it is not your task to pass judgement on that - positive or negative. If you thrive off people commenting positively on your body, especially after weight or body related change, what are you really seeking from them? . . I understand this is a topic of debate. This is the angle I take. If this doesn't vibe with you, that's okay. “White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard For White People To Talk About Racism” by Robin DiAngelo (foreword by @michaelericdyson) # Highly recommended read. For white liberals and progressives, most of us have great disdain for racism. Most of us were taught that racism is bad, and tend to think that only the worst of people commit acts of racism or have beliefs of white supremacy/superiority. The problem is, every single person has prejudice (yes even people of color, although that is often brought up as a deflection by white folks from thinking about our own bias and the work that we should be doing as white people). This prejudice is the natural result of growing up in a society where systemic racism results in white people always having been valued above people of color in ways that are mostly invisible to us on the conscious level. This is how socialization works*, and none of us are capable of fully escaping it. # What we can do, is work to unlearn our socialized racial prejudice. But this takes work. Intentional and oftentimes uncomfortable work, and the ability to move past our defensiveness that takes a wide range of forms. Too often, white fragility prevents us from understanding HOW we are inevitably going to enact and/or perpetuate racism because when we are called out, we spend all of our energy defending our intentions or the belief that we “don’t see race” or that we “don’t care if you’re Black, white, pink, blue, or polka-dotted.” This shuts down and derails the conversation (in its most benign forms), and we get to return to racial equilibrium (which always involves white comfort and superiority). And then we don’t get to learn. # Ingrained and unconscious racism is not just something that Trump supporters need to unlearn...WHITE LIBERALS AND PROGRESSIVES MUST UNLEARN IT AS WELL...YES, EVEN YOU. Without that understanding and without doing the work, we will never be capable of being the best allies we can be, and both systemic and individual racism will

I am so damn thrilled that we made AND ENORMOUSLY EXCEEDED the cutoff to make this onto the 2020 ballot. The people want change and we, the people, are going to MAKE IT HAPPEN. So many people were a part of the @reformlajails effort thus far, and I am grateful for every single one of you. There is much more work to be done to making sure this passes. If you say you want change, then BE ABOUT IT. Follow @reformlajails for chances to be a part of this work. Special appreciation and shout out to @osopepateisse and @jcannick for making this possible and for their leadership in making Los Angeles actually live up to its professed morals. Thank you to the people and to the families of those that have been impacted by this racist, classist state-sponsored terrorism, for speaking your truth and for your resilience that inspires us all to work for justice and freedom. # Repost from @osopepatrisse - “Today we made history. A mostly Black and Brown team submitted 246,000 signatures to the Los Angeles County Clerk’s office. We are going to change this county through protest, through policy, through engagement on the grassroots level. This campaign is not over, it really has just begun. It’s been almost two decades since the Sheriff’s almost killed my brother. They messed with the wrong family. If this initiative passes ( it will ). Our civilian oversight commission will get subpoena power and investigative power. It will also push forward a report detailing every single way LA county can actual prioritize people most vulnerable to incarceration. It will help us think about real alternatives to incarceration. #ReformLAJails #DignityandPowerNow #ThisIsForMonte “

And I appreciate that, as a white woman, she understands the necessity of anti-racism and class politics in feminism as well. I read her book, “Hope In The Dark” and absolutely loved it. Hoping to read “Men Explain Things To Me” as the final book in her trilogy soon. # Also, all @haymarketbooks are 50% off on their site for the next 22 days. As white people, we cannot JUST be against the MOST egregious forms of white supremacy, such as white terrorists murdering Black people. We live in a CULTURE of white supremacy. We are all swimming in it, learning from it in the most subtle ways EVERY SINGLE DAY. From the fact that the white man who killed #NiaWilson will not be called a terrorist, but a Brown man who kills white people will be seen as such by default. White folks...if you are not noticing racism every single day, then you have normalized it. Which means that you will also perpetuate it despite your best intentions. The most egregious acts of white supremacy happen because “well meaning” white folks refuse to take on anti-racism as our fight. Remember, racism does not require that we actively hate People or Color for it to persist. It only requires that we don’t care enough to listen from and learn from anti-racist activists of color. That we don’t make it an ABSOLUTE PRIORITY in our lives to work on ourselves, put ourselves in uncomfortable situations, and put our bodies in the way of the inertia of hundreds of years of cultural and systemic racism. If you don’t know what some of the forms of white supremacy are on this pyramid, then Google them. Read articles (or better yet books) from POC who have written about them. Share those resources with other white people in your life. And then examine and interrupt how they show up in your own life and all around you. That is what we must do, if we are white people intent on ending racism. It is the only way. # Repost from @sonyareneetaylor - “earlier this week i shared a pyramid of white supremacy. This one is far more specific. If we start with the reality that white supremacy is a social system we have all been indoctrinated into we can move beyond feeling guilty about catching an intentionally contagious virus and focus on getting well. Examine your behaviors. Where do they fall on this chart. What do you need to unlearn to divest from the system of

Rest In Power #NiaWilson . These reposts are from a few days ago. 1st video from @oranicuhh . The rest, and caption from @shishi.rose - # “The fight for Black lives has become almost entirely about police brutality. And almost entirely about Black men. • That does not represent the reality of Black women and girls also being abused and murdered all the time by police and ordinary citizens. • 18 year old #NiaWilson murdered and her sister Tayisha left in critical condition after a white supremacist by the name of John Lee Cowell stabbed them both last night at the Bart train station in Oakland. This terrorist was a member of a white supremacy group called The Proud Boys. The girls father is currently not being updated by the police. • Black people are under constant attack. I think sometimes people don’t realize how much shit like this is happening because Black people aren’t posting about it all the time because we mentally can not handle it. And also many stories aren’t even properly documented. But we are never safe. These young women were targeted for their race and for being women, an intersection that feminists like to leave out of discussions. This terrorist was caught on camera stalking the sisters before attacking which the BART train station had video proof of and didn’t release for hours. White supremacy fuels misogyny and Black women are the most at stake. • Black people stay safe out here to the best of your ability. Buy mace, a knife, a taser, anything that can help you if you find yourself in a situation like this. White people and non Black people get off ur ass and do something, fight this shit. • We are tired of screaming at you to care. Your silence has a body count. #JusticeForNia #SayHerName Photos and video via @misscarolf “

I am so excited for the incredible projects that Anna is continuing to align herself with and for the world to get to know more of her brilliance and immense kindness. Sending you love and strength, Anna! #IStandWithAnnaDiop # Repost from @minkakelly using - “I would like to take a moment to acknowledge how proud and excited I am to be working alongside @The_AnnaDiop. In my humble opinion, @DCUTitans, @theDCuniverse and all of their fans are lucky to have her talent, her grace and her beauty on board. While the abhorrent racism in this country seems to be going nowhere anytime soon (#NiaWilson), the dignity, strength and couth my friend continues to exemplify in the face of it humbles and inspires me. That so many racist cowards would take the time to attack her instagram so that she has to shut off comments after having already shut down her entire account once before over this bullshit makes me feel rage. Though I also feel a small relief knowing how strong and thick-skinned Anna is. I know she is and will be ok. It takes zero courage to sit in your dark lonely room spewing your venom online while protected by your anonymous faceless accounts. I cannot begin to fathom the courage it requires everyday just to exist as a black woman in this country (#ChikesiaClemons) let alone to also have the audacity to fight for and follow your dreams. I bow to you, Anna. I can’t wait for everyone to see the brilliant work you’ve done. Shine on, my love. You are a queen and all the people who matter know it. #IStandWithAnnaDiop 👑✨ “

I can’t overstate how proud I am to be part of @wearemanenough, and in particular, this episode. (Swipe for trailer) * It should not solely have to be on women to call out sexual harassment and misogyny. Men need to take up this burden as well. So far women & specifically women of color have led the global movements in regards to battling sexism and gender inequality, but we as men have barely entered the conversation. This has to change. We need to do some serious self reflection. And then we have to ACT. In order to be a part of the solution, there are a number of principles that I strive to live my life by now (having made plenty of mistakes in the past & undoubtedly with more to come in the future). Three of those core principles are to Listen, Amplify, and Unlearn. On #ManEnough, we discuss negative mindsets that can be improved upon and in doing so how we can change negative patterns of behavior, create culture-shifting dialogue and in turn, move towards a better future. We do this because we know that so many of the harmful pressures of what it means to be a “real man” in our culture also leads us away from being true allies and accomplices to women and non-binary people. And we know that no one is free until we are all free. Through conversation, honest dialogue, and real-time action we hope to redefine what it means to be men in both The United States America and globally. Please join us on this journey. * Tag a friend and join me for the premiere TODAY of the @wearemanenough #MeToo episode on Facebook Watch. * I am proud to be both a participant and a producer of #ManEnough * http://bit.ly/2JQosiq (link in bio). The #Metoo movement started by @taranajaneen has been a watershed moment in our society, yet for the most part men have been largely quiet on the subject. If we want to be allies/ accomplices and make progressive changes in the sexist dynamics of society we need to challenge ourselves to ask difficult questions, and be in action. I sat down at a table with a group of men on #ManEnough and had an honest conversation about men and the #MeToo movement. By asking the simple question “What does it mean to be a man?” we are looking to explore and redefine traditional masculinity in America. * Tag a friend and join me for the premiere of the @wearemanenough #MeToo episode July 24th on Facebook Watch. #ManEnough * http://bit.ly/2JQosiq * Featuring @justinbaldoni, @mattmcgorry, Jamey Heath, @lewishowes, @scooterbraun Tony Porter, @advertisingdiva Susan Brison, Alma Gonzalez and @yazminmonetwatkins

“Men’s Work: How To Stop The Violence That Tears Our Lives Apart” by Paul Kivel # I loved this book. Men, I would encourage you all to read through these few pages and see what resonates. In the wake of how much men’s violence against women has come into the public eye in the past few months, we owe it to ourselves and the women in our lives to make a serious effort to understand how we got here and what we can do to change the culture. This book is a great resource to begin that process. # As men, we constantly receive messages on “how to be a real man” for our entire lives. Unfortunately, so many of these expectations are actually harmful to us, and result in us being unable to live our best, fullest lives. Four years ago, if you had asked me whether I thought that the pressures of traditional masculinity played a role in my life, I would have estimated that it was minimal. That’s the way socialization creates the status quo. We don’t notice it happening because it begins at birth, continues until the day we die, and is so pervasive that it becomes what is considered normal, to the extent that it’s practically invisible. # Only with tools that allow us to view it through a critical lens, by engaging in deep introspection, and taking action to push against the walls of “The Act Like A Man Box” do we stand a chance of living as fully as we are capable of. We are constantly swayed away from fully naming and exploring our emotions, asking for help, working in equal partnership with women, even considering the possibility that we can turn down sex, and developing deeper, more intimate and authentic relationships with the men in our lives (for fear of “seeming gay”), and the women in our lives (because we are trained not to see them as leaders and to objectify them). # This book provides some incredible insight into how we can fight for justice, live to our greatest potential, and be forces for ending the epidemic of violence against women in our society. # #PaulKiv

Got this from @sonyareneetaylor ‘s IG...follow her for some daily wisdom! And her book “The Body Is Not An Apology” is out now as well! 😊😊😊 # Repost from @sonyareneetaylor using - #Repost @consciouslens ・・・ Let's talk about fear... You don't have to agree with the following facts but nonetheless they are true. Everyone gets afraid. Everyone experiences fear. Fearless is an interesting concept but the brain tells us that everyone experiences fear. Whether we experience fear isn't in question, the question is, what is our response to fear? What do we do when we feel the sensations that we call fear? sweating trembling hot flushes or chills shortness of breath or difficulty breathing a choking sensation rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) pain or tightness in the chest a sensation of butterflies in the stomach nausea headaches and dizziness feeling faint numbness or pins and needles dry mouth a need to go to the toilet ringing in your ears confusion or disorientation It is essential to recognize that fear is healthy, a natural part of the human design. In many cases it is fear that prevents us from taking risks that would harm ourselves or others. Some fears are Illusions and others we learn from traumatic experiences, or what we were taught to be afraid of. Back to our response to fear... How do you respond to fear? How many times have you allowed fear to stop you? How many times has fear caused you to quit, run or be unwilling to risk? What type of relationship would you like with fear? If none is the answer...go back to the beginning, we all experience fear. What will your relationship with fear be? How will you cultivate it? Can you live, thrive and be successful through your fears? Let me change that. Will you? #fear #fearless #doitanyway “

When you a man and someone does something that hurts you or that you don’t like but you’re socialized to believe that vulnerability makes you “like a woman,” “not a real man,” or “gay” which you are taught to avoid at all costs so you don’t express your feeling in a healthy way and thus sacrifice the ability to ever fully be yourself or truly resolve conflict which makes you unable to deal with your inner life in constructive ways so we turn to anger because it’s the only socially accepted form of emotion for men and then we wonder why men commit nearly all of the violence in the world. # Yes I’m aware that people of all genders do what is depicted in the meme. But as men, we really take the cake on not expressing our feelings and punishing other men who do...and punishing women for doing it too bc we think we are owed things by women which are only based on our own sexist perceptions. Like judging and controlling women’s sexuality (shaming them for being a “tease” and also for being “a slut”), their assertiveness (we call it “bossy” or “cold” in women), in conversation when we constantly talk over and interrupt women without noticing it, and when we dismiss women’s concerns as “crazy” or “dramatic.” Let’s not. # (Image from @el_monchiz24 seen on @ernestoyerena ‘s IG)

Art by @rubyetc_ / post below from @bodyposipanda # “UNADULTERATED 💃 BULLSHIT 💃 casual reminder that the concept of 'problem areas' is a marketing ploy that the diet industry invented to guarantee that there's aaaalways something new to sell us. Step 1: Realise that a shit tonne of money can be made teaching people that completely natural bodily features are problems to be fixed. Step 2: Saturate the media with headlines on how to eliminate the hideous 'flaws' that you literally just invented for profit. Step 3: Get rich. Step 4: Make up a new problem area. Thighs without a gap. Hip dips. Cellulite. Wrinkles. Saddle bags. Bingo wings. ALL OF THESE COMPLETELY NATURAL BODY PARTS WERE NOT SEEN AS 'PROBLEMS' UNTIL WE WERE TOLD THEY WERE. In fact, some of them didn't even have a name until the diet industry realised that naming and shaming them could make cash. What's next? How many more times are we going to buy into the lie that we're made of flawed pieces that need to be fixed? We are WHOLE human beings. Our bodies are SUPPOSED to look different. We need to stop focusing on fixing 'problem areas' and start focusing on fixing the real problem - how we're taught to see our bodies, and how to unlearn those lies. 💜💙💚🌈🌞 Art by @rubyetc_ “

“In The Country We Love: My Family Divided” by @dianexguerrero # Storytelling is an essential part of activism and creating change. It also requires a willingness to be vulnerable and open one’s self to criticism and the fear of harm that this openness can result in. I’m so proud of my friend, Diane, and her willingness to do this. Her story is one of inspiration and hope, and also of great difficulty. Learning about the hope with which her family arrived in this country, to the dehumanizing and vulnerable experiences of being undocumented in the U.S. really impacted me. To understand a bit more about this common and intense fear of living in the shadows is an important fact of understanding my friend better, and also of understanding myself, the country that I live in, and the privileges that are afforded to me by the sheer luck of being born a documented citizen. And Diane’s ability to impart this with honesty, humor, and an inspiring message, is just another thing I get appreciate her for. Looking forward to the stories that you will continue to tell and the impact that you will continue to have, Diane! #InTheCountryWeLove #DianeGuerrero # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads #mcgreads

Appreciative of the beautiful photography (and mind) of @hfdavis . Actions such as the one just 2 weekends ago organizes by @conmijente are an integral part of the fight for freedom. When I am feeling overwhelmed and down with what is going on in the world, being among a community of people that have gathered for the purpose of liberation uplifts my spirits. Oftentimes, the way that we digest information online and in our silos can make us feel more alone than we really are. In a country that worships individualism and the savior mentality, we often don’t make time to be in community with our fellow humans that are striving for justice. But there is so much to be learned just in showing up. So much that can’t be learned just by reading and studying. Solidarity requires action, not just beliefs. Seeing and being a part of folks showing up for one another is a beautiful, life-affirming action. # Repost from @hfdavis - “An incredibly powerful day in San Diego as we fought to #FreeOurFuture and bring an end to the unjust criminalization, detention, and killing of our people. The more than 2,000 children probably will need to deal with court proceedings even as they grapple with the trauma of being taken from their parents. “We were representing a 3-year-old in court recently who had been separated from the parents. And the child – in the middle of the hearing – started climbing up on the table,” said Lindsay Toczylowski, executive director of Immigrant Defenders Law Center in Los Angeles. “It really highlighted the absurdity of what we’re doing with these kids.”' ⚠️⚠️⚠️ @nowthisnews . . . . . . #AbolishIce#WeAreTheMedia #peaceaccelerators#IndependentJournalism #PeoplePlanetPeace #ItsInOurHands #ItsUpToUs#OurRevolution #PoliticalRevolution #WeThePeople#ForThePeopleByThePeople #WeAreThe99Percent#WeAreInThisTogether #PeoplePlanetPeaceView “

If you care about progressive issues (aka human rights) please read article in @nolympicsla ‘s bio). Liberal white supremacy is still white supremacy. # Repost from @nolympicsla - “Why We Crashed Garcetti’s Mansion” up on our blog now (link in their bio). It’s not super complicated. @mayorofla claims to be "progressive" on these very pressing issues -- housing, homelessness, immigration, ICE, policing -- but, in fact, his true positions are that of a moderate Republican. #WakeUpGarcetti # Excerpts from blog- “Garcetti ensures LA is not a sanctuary city By aiding federal and local law enforcement, Garcetti enables the deportation machine while pretending to be an ally of immigrants.Garcetti recently traveled to the Texas border for photo opps claiming he wants to #KeepFamiliesTogether, yet he has never pushed for Los Angeles to be a true sanctuary city. Instead, he’s allowed ICE and other federal law enforcement agencies to coordinate with local law enforcement throughout his entire tenure. This includes LAPD sharing intelligence with ICE via the CalGang database system, and allowing ICE access to LA jails. Later on the same day we protested and urged him to make LA a true sanctuary city, Garcetti spoke at the immigration rally downtown and proved that he doesn’t want to abolish ICE or stop their coordination with law enforcement in LA. Instead, while members of DSA-LA and other groups drowned him out in boos and chants of "ICE out of LA," Garcetti declared he doesn’t want to abolish ICE and other agencies. He just wants ICE to “do its job,” which is an unacceptable and inhumane position in general but especially for an area with 800,000 undocumented people. He also will support taking money from Trump's DHS for the racist Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) program.” # “He wants to criminalize sleeping on the sidewalk in the American city with the most people sleeping on the streets. Regram from @kendrick38 2 days ago. # “What we think of these borders 🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽— and especially the way Brown, Black and Native people are being abused and violated at the border by Jeff Sessions, ICE, Border Patrol, and the continued legacy of white supremacy, invasion and colonization in the Americas, especially in most recent history by the US. # Families are STILL being separated. Children and parents are still being traumatized and abused. And m we have to remember, this is not just a Latinx issue... black immigrants from Haiti, the Caribbean, Africa, Afro-Latinos, Native, and Muslim immigrants are being treated just as bad and sometimes WORSE because of the intersectional oppression and invisibility. TPS, Zero Tolerance Policy, and Muslim Ban together is filling for profit immigration PRISONS and separating families. These are not separate. # Remember that the Spanish were European colonizers. The brown ethnic identity of Latinx people comes from NATIVE South and Central AMERICAN blood and Black blood from the slave trade. So this is a DIRECT continuation of enslavement, abuse, genocide of Native American, brown and black people by the white MINORITY of the Americas occupying stolen land. # Today we have an awesome group of influencers, celebrities, activists sharing stories at the border and participating in social justice training and education on this issue from grassroots activists doing the REAL work like @instabaji @migrantfreedom @panasandiego #HatianBridgeAlliance #AlotroLado Learning how we can raise money to post bond for some of these immigrants who literally are in prison and separated from family because they can’t afford to post bond. 1/3 of these people are eligible and would otherwise spend as long as 7/8 years in “detention” aka prison until they see a trial date. These are refugees and asylum seekers that are fleeing violence largely created and/or exacerbated by our government. #closeimmigrantprisons #keepfamiliestogether #abolishICE “

The government’s current war on immigrants, exposed recently through the inhumane separation of migrant parents and children has struck a nerve with the population and spurred them into action. People are organizing and mobilizing across the country to make a stand against the immigration policies of the Trump regime. The separation of families (which Trump’s executive order did NOT stop), the deportations, the criminalization of immigration are all inhumane practices which have to stop. We demand for immigration policy that calls for the aboliltion of ICE and a full-scale decriminalization of immigration. * Parents are being threatened with never seeing their children again unless they agree to be deported, the government is setting up “tent cities” that can hold tens of thousands of people indefinitely. * Mijente has called for mass direct actions which are taking place today across the country which call for the removal of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, the abolition of ICE and the end of Operation Streamline, a program which seeks to drastically speed up the deportation process. Today is the day that the mass criminalization of migrants at the border is expected to escalate. We have to act NOW. * The best way to be an active participant is to put your body on the line. But you can help out online too by spreading the message and word through social media. You can find information about the mass mobilizations here: https://bit.ly/2KDBReA * You can volunteer to provide legal support here: https://bit.ly/2KFUAGE * You can sign up here to support Mijente in planning these actions: https://bit.ly/2z4dupe * This is the moment we get to decide what side of history we want to be on, do we want to say no to the terror and lifelong trauma that will be inflicted on children, or do we want to remain silent and complicit? * #AbolishICE #FreeOurFuture #ShutDownSessions #AbolishCBP #FreedomForImmigrants #EndFamilyDetention * @thepeacepoets @alelaplebe #IsmahanAbdullahi Th

I heard that 75,000 people showed up today in LA for #FamiliesBelongTogether rally. As always, was honored to spend time with some bold and fierce activists that I admire greatly; @lavernecox , @labamby of @translatinacoalition , @docmellymel of @blmlosangeles , and @kendrick38 # Melina drew the important comparisons of family separations through inhumane immigration policies to that of what Black folks have experienced through the long legacy of slavery, mass incarceration, and police murder (not to mention what Black immigrants face in addition). And never afraid to tell the truth, she called out @mayorofla (who also spoke) for his liberal racism and two-faced speeches about “keeping families together” while people are detained just a few blocks away under his watch. My time spent with @blmlosangeles has taught me a lot about the continual oppression of People of Color that Garcetti is complicit in, from his lack of action to make LA a sanctuary city, to his continued silence about the $3.5 billion dollar expansion of new jails, and police murder. # This shit isn’t just about the president and the racist troll by the name of Jeff Sessions. It is also about #EricGarcetti. If we truly want families to stay together, then we must fight for this on ALL fronts, and be willing to hold so-called liberal politicians accountable as well. Tomorrow, I’m heading down to the border in San Diego to continue my fight. We cannot let up. Not now, not after this presidency, and not until Black and Brown lives matter.

And this is not even including what is spent on incarceration or the new $3.5 BILLION DOLLAR jail plan that @reformlajails is trying to stop in LA. @mayorofla has approved a new “Emergency Shelter Plan” that provides not nearly enough housing and MORE MONEY for police than for housing. At every turn, @mayorofla works for less police accountability, criminalizing the unhoused population and allocating resources in ways that will never solve the problem of the 60,000 unhoused people in LA. (To learn more about his new plan, click the link in @nolympicsla ‘s bio or go to https://bit.ly/2MBwPzU ) (tweet from @losangelesdsa ). # Never forget that cities like LA and NYC have enough money to end homelessness. What they lack is the political will. And the only way that that will happen is by the demands of the people. Organize, organize, organize. Join and donate to @losangelesdsa , @nolympicsla , @lacanetwork or other grassroots organizations doing the damn work. # And I’ll add to the above tweet, not just “brothers and sisters,” but “siblings,” to be inclusive of all the non-binary folks. # #DefundThePolice #InvestInCommunities #PeopleOverProfits

“Optimism Over Despair: On Capitalism, Empire, and Social Change” by #NoamChomsky # My brother got this for me for Christmas and this is the first book I’ve read by Noam Chomsky, who is widely viewed as one of the most important and brilliant intellectuals of our time. The book is a compilation of interviews including a wide range of subjects and centering the complicity of the United States in many atrocities here and abroad. As one of the quotes outlined in the book says about a U.S. conducted international poll, “...world opinion regarded the United States as the as by far the leading threat to world peace, no one even close.” # From making the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the ensuing violence against Palestinian civilians possible with U.S. support, to the murder of civilians by U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and other countries, to the U.S. policy of undermining democratic elections when it does not serve our needs, there is a great breadth of information on many topics that are important for us to know about. And truths which those of us who care for justice will need to critically examine no matter who president of the U.S. empire. #OptimismOverDespair # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads #mcgreads

**link to film in bio or here bit.ly/VL_15YL** Storytelling and conversations are at the heart of my work. I believe that a great story can provoke people to look more deeply into the world we live in, see a different perspective, and through empathy and compassion, choose different decisions and move into action. * * That’s why I was excited to join @manishdayal and the team to be part of @fifteenyearslatermovie (Link to film in Bio) which surfaces the continued racism, hate crimes, and police violence targeted the South Asian community after 9/11. The themes in the film connect to the broader violence and xenophobia that we continue to experience, and is escalating drastically, across all Black and Brown communities. * * Hope you’ll watch the film! And I hope you’ll continue to be in action NOW amidst the trampling of human rights in our country with the over 2,300 separated from their families with no plan of reuniting them and the murder by police of #AntwonRose. Link in bio for ways to be in action against Islamophobia and police violence. * * About the Film: Sam and Jason, two young men who have absorbed the psychological effects of post-9/11 America in ways they may not fully understand, find their buried issues and resentments bubbling to the surface when their lives intersect during a police traffic stop * * #fifteenyearlater #VigilantLOVE #StopCVE #Islamophobia #SouthAsian #WP4BL #SURJ #NoHumanIsIllegal #AntwonRose @rachelbrosnahan @tracymulholland

“Well, That Escalated Quickly: Memoirs and Mistakes of an Accidental Activist” by Franchesca Ramsey @chescaleigh # I first came across Franchesca’s work when I was just beginning to be involved in social justice. I was immediately drawn to how she was able to break down seemingly complicated concepts to make them understandable, while adeptly using humor in the process. I really enjoyed the book as a look into her life and development as an activist including the nuances and struggles of using social media as a tool for conversations around social justice. I also greatly admire her willingness to admit to her own mistakes along the way. I believe that this is an incredibly important part of activism that we must remember...we will always fuck up at times, and how we handle that makes the difference in the kind of people and agents of change that we become. # #WTEQ #FranchescaRamsey # My Booklist: https://bit.ly/2M1D8wn #mcgreads

Our government is separating thousands of parents and children. Hundreds of these children are just toddlers, some even babies less than a year old.  In the past 2 weeks close to 2000 kids have been taken from their parents.
Sometimes the parents are told the child is just being taken for a bath, and then the child is sent to a government facility across the country. * * This is a moral catastrophe and a human rights violation with echoes of not only our despicable past history of separating children from their parents during slavery, and the forced assimilation into western culture through boarding schools for Native Americans, and the Japanese Internment camps during WWII. * * America continued these racist, xenophobic policies, as discussed in many of the books I read and post about, which has led to where we are now….the criminalization and mass incarceration of Black and Brown communities, rabid gun violence with a blind eye to how white supremacist behavior influences many of the shooters, and continued abomination of cops killing civilians without being held accountable. * Connect the dots. Separating families is only one piece of the puzzle.  Keeping families together in cages is not a win, they are still in cages. And the US has caused and enabled the violent governments folks are fleeing from.Make a commitment to be in Action. There are many ways you can be in action based on your ability. Please go to SURJ to find out more. * * This. Must. Stop. https://bit.ly/2tjGiUL Please call your senators at 202-224-3121 #FamiliesBelongTogether

B. T. W. THA. NOS. We DO have enough resources for everyone to live but we won’t soon if we continue as we have been. Maybe if human beings weren’t so damn problematic and if things weren’t being controlled by a capitalist oligarchy and if the factory farming industry and Big Oil wasn’t destroying the Earth and we actually learned to live in peace with one another and our environment and took lessons from Indigenous populations on sustainability, then we wouldn’t need you to kill off half the universe. Maybe you could do some shit about THAT with your jewel-encrusted, blinged out glove. I meaaannnn...if you can do ANYthing...if you’re all powerful...MAYBE, just maybe, you could fund grassroots movements for liberation or marginalized communities and disintegrate oil drills and break up the big banks and fuck with universal healthcare while disintegrating (abolishing) the police and prison industrial complex while materializing (creating) infrastructure that teaches restorative justice and non-violent communication to all people so that humans actually have a chance of surviving more than a few more generations without making the Earth uninhabitable or killing ourselves off due to some men who are all about toxic masculinity. Or nah? (Image repost from @truevillainy )

Mayor Garcetti of Los Angeles is full of shit. If you live in LA, are you pissed off about the crisis of the unhoused population that has SKYROCKETED under @mayorofla ? Then I hope your anger is well-placed on Garcetti and his fake-progressivism and not the unhoused populations that are victim to these inhumane policies. # Repost from @nolympicsla - “We asked @mayorofla about citations and arrests for unhoused folks on @kpcc with @amartinezla. “The Truth About Criminalization and Homelessness in Garcetti’s LA” is on our blog now (link in bio with full video). #HouseKeysNotHandcuffs #StopTheSweeps @losangelesdsa “ # “...LA’s occasional Mayor, Eric Garcetti, stood before the media to proclaim once again that the city has moved away from criminalization, stating: “We cannot criminalize our way out of homelessness, we must humanize our way out of it.” Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson added: “The number of people incarcerated for homeless related violations is practically zero.” Of course, the facts tell us otherwise, and our everyday experiences witnessing the growth of encampments have confirmed it all over the city. Arrests of unhoused Angelenos continue to rise, with most offenses based on laws created specifically to target and criminalize those living in extreme poverty. Dehumanizing police and sanitation sweeps of homeless encampments continue to endanger the physical and mental health of the unhoused by discarding and destroying their vital belongings. This is nothing new; the commodification of basic human needs like housing has led to the crises we’re now mired in, as public resources have instead been diverted to law enforcement to terrorize, criminalize, incarcerate, and disappear the unhoused in the name of “public safety.””

"I Am Not Sick, I Don't Need Help! How To Help Someone With Mental Illness Accept Treatment" by Dr. Xavier Amador, Ph.D. # *His definition of "serious mental illness" in the book ("for the sake of brevity" as referenced in the book) are "psychotic illnesses including schizophernia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and others." He states that there are many other types of serious mental illnesses but that this book deals with the others for reasons stated below. # I first saw Dr. Amador's Ted Talk (called "I am not sick, I don't need help!" and is available if you Google it) and my interest was greatly piqued. Coming from a family with multiple people suffering from schizophrenia, I have never quite felt like I had enough tools to be as helpful as I could be. There are approximately 6 million people in the U.S. that have serious mental illnesses* (again using the definition of above), and about 50% of these people do not believe that they are ill and refuse to take the medication prescribed for them. # Oftentimes, the automatic response of family, friends, etc to those that are suffering from the serious mental illness* is to deny this person's experiences. To try and disprove the delusions or provide evidence for why the delusions cannot possibly be real. Oftentimes in hopes that this will get the person to realize that they are suffering from mental illness, and thus accept treatment. Too often, we see it as stubbornness or denial, instead of what it really is. # Anosognosia is a lack of insight into illness that actually stems from damage to the brain. "we felt there was good reason to believe that what we were seeing in patients with schizophrenia was a consequence of brain dysfunction rather then stubornness, defensiveness, or ignorance about mental illness in general. The fact is that the brain circuitry responsible for recording and updating self-concept is not working properly in such patients." # I am not incredibly knowledgeable about menta

“Emergent Strategy” by @adriennemareebrown # Brown has written a really beautiful book. I encountered some new perspectives and thoughts about activism and organizing that really resonated. I was moved by the proposition that freedom work is also work of the imagination. As I grow as an activist, so does my imagination. But as an actor and storyteller, I often find that many projects are quite constricted into very narrow constructs of imagination. It’s no wonder that so many of us struggle to imagine a world where everyone gets free. # #EmergentStrategy #AdrienneMareeBrown Check out my complete booklist https://bit.ly/2M1D8wn #McGReads

You know those moments u read about in history books & think, “How could people let that happen?” We’re in one of those moments. Our time is now: Our nation’s treatment of immigrant children, women & families is devastatingly wrong. * Every day, the Trump admin is intentionally separating children from their families. This administration has proven that whether its at the border or in detention, it cannot be trusted with the care of children. * Hundreds of children have been ripped from their families: 658 kids in the first 13 days of the program alone. * Our elected officials need to stand strong against the separation of families. Arresting, putting children behind bars, and then losing them is cruel and inhumane. Call members of Congress & demand they Defund ICE & CBP: 210-702-3059 * #FamiliesBelongTogether www. webelongtogetherkids.org

#HappyMothersDay to my wonderful mudder* (*as I often call her)! # Through the last few years of my commitment to unlearning much of my socialization, I’ve become aware of how much I had distanced myself from identifying with the parts of my mother (and other women) that were deemed feminine. # Despite the fact that I never really recognized this for most of my life, I drew lines that would prevent me from being considered a momma’s boy, “a girl,” “gay,” or any other thing that society taught me that I should not be like if I wanted respect and to be “a real man.” Despite growing up in an extraordinarily progressive household, I still got these messages from my peers, the movies I watched, and every area of life. # I am thankful that I am on the lifelong path of re-educating myself out of these dangerous beliefs that lead to anger, shame, and the insatiable need for control, in exchange for becoming my fullest, best self. And I am grateful that this now allows me to more fully appreciate some of the qualities that I gained from my mother, that I was less likely to lean into previously...compassion, empathy, and sensitivity. # To be able to more fully learn from the wisdom of women and girls and be able to see my mother as hero (or shero) and to see other women as my leaders as well is a great gift. One that too many of us men (and particularly straight men) miss out on. I love you mom, and I’m grateful to be spending this mother day with you.

“All About Love: New Visions” by bell hooks # As per usual, bell hooks is the source of some incredibly thought- provoking material. Love of friends, family, and romantic love are just some of types of love explored in this book. Culturally, we are rather devoid of examples of a deep love that is possible. This book is an antidote to that. # #McGReads #bellhooks

“Pedagogy Of The Oppressed” by Paulo Freire # Classic text. Not the easiest read (for me) but some really important perspectives that have been very significant in shaping the marriage of social justice movements and education. #McGReads

Link in bio for full article # When people ask me about my motivation to be an activist I think about why it matters so much. This weekend connected & reminded me of my Why. And it’s simple. Our connection to each other as human beings. I don’t care that some people will say that’s so corny or whatever, but it’s my Truth. # On Sunday at the border with the Refugee Caravan I saw people who simply want to live in a world where they can live without violence, persecution and hunger. To love and raise their children. To express themselves fully. # I truly believe that I cannot be the person I want / strive to be without each and every person in the Caravan (& in Puerto Rico, & sitting in a prison, & sleeping on the street on Skid Row) being able to be who they want/strive to be. # The contrite reasons why I have the ability to be my best self & others cannot is based on made up “realities” that serve as death notices, in all senses of the Word. Symbolic & literal in many cases. # This is why I choose (privilege) to fight for a world where Black & Brown lives are as important as white lives. This is why I show up (privilege) when I can, where I can to add my voice & body to the movement to smash white supremacy & patriarchy. This why I commit to/ strive to embody a different way to be white. I know I may not see it in my lifetime, but I commit to the ideals until my last breath. # #refugeecaravan

Repost from @jasiri_x - His new song is 🔥🔥🔥 “The Whitest House”. You can see the full video in the link in his bio. # If we had a world where more artists were as dedicated to truth telling and social justice as @jasiri_x , we would be living in a very different world. Admire this man’s fearlessness. Check out his other work and fall into a rabbit hole of his videos on YouTube like I did.

@kendrick38 @sivaofficial @mattmcgorry @wp4bl @karla_estrada_222 @justinomora1 Link in bio to donate. The Pueblo Sin Fronteras caravan has been operating informally since 2010, safely transporting asylum-seekers from Central America to the U.S. The majority of people in the caravan are from Honduras, fleeing soaring homicide rates, political violence, and a failing economy. Much of the unrest in Honduras stems from their current president, who fraudulently won the election backed by Donald Trump. Recently, the caravan caught the attention of Fox News and Donald Trump's tweets - and he has now called for the National Guard to be there waiting for the caravan at the border.Fortunately, we can help bring this caravan safely to asylum in the U.S. Here's what you can do to make a difference and take a stand for refugees: Donate and spread the word! #refugeecaravan
