🌹 “...and I do think that there are other ways that we could live and be. And beyond that, I think we deserve it, we have to demand it, we have to believe that it’s possible. We have to believe in that world, it can’t be a utopia.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've put the entirety of my conversation with @drdenismukwege on my IGTV ❤️.

🌎💔🇺🇸 Last week, a bill was signed into law in Georgia that is a near-total ban on abortion. This marks the fourth “heartbeat” law to be passed in the United States in the last year - a name that is designed to be emotive. It refers to the first signs of the development of a heart in a fetus at 6 weeks of pregnancy, long before most people know they are pregnant. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🍑💔 Georgia’s bill stands out for going one step further in including personhood language, criminalising not just abortion providers, but also pregnant people for having abortions or even miscarrying. Today, Alabama passed its own law banning abortion except when the health of the mother is at risk. We remember that Savita Halappanavar died in Ireland with the same law on the books. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🇬🇧💔 Currently, women & pregnant people living in Northern Ireland are forced to travel to mainland Britain for abortion care that is illegal in their home country. There will always be people who cannot travel because of domestic violence, immigration status, and disability. People living in Northern Ireland and the USA deserve the dignity of accessing safe, legal & local reproductive healthcare at home. #nowforni These laws won't stop women and pregnant people from having abortions, or from making the best decision for their bodies and families, it will just mean they are forced to do so unsafely and with stigma. #reproductiverightsforall ✊ Please join me in supporting @plannedparenthood @womenhelporg @all4choice @abortionsupportnetwork ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

💐💪🏾 “Taking action means saying ‘no’ to indifference. If there is a war to be waged, it is the war against the indifference which is eating away at our societies.” - @drdenismukwege ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dr. Denis Mukwege has been a brilliant colleague and collaborator on the @g7 Gender Equality Council in Paris. 💫 To borrow praise from a mutual friend, Eve Ensler, Dr. Mukwege is truly ‘a beacon for all men to follow.' The Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of Panzi Hospital is so inspiring to me as a doctor, activist, and male ally in the fight against gender-based violence.✊🏾🧡 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was so fun interviewing him in my home city as part of @how.to.academy & @nytimes ‘How to Understand Our Times.’ Thank you for sharing your learnings and lifetime of work with us and declaring what feminists across the gender spectrum know to be true: “Rape is not just a physical, violent act perpetrated against one victim, it is an assault on humanity." 🌻💛 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌟 If you would like to take action to support Denis’s work, please visit @mukwegefoundation or www.mukwegefoundation.org/get-involved

“We urge G7 leaders to be as brave as women and girls are every single day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We expect G7 states to urgently adopt, fully implement and fund, the most ambitious legislative frameworks on combating gender based violence against women in order to create a fair, safe and dignified world for its constituents. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This goes beyond politics, and left and right. We are simply asking member states to protect universal human rights and be the leaders we know they can be. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As human beings, please do not be passive bystanders to the attacks and roll backs we see happening all around us and every day on women’s rights all across the world - be active participants in moving us forward.” ~ @g7 Gender Equality Advisory Council, Paris 2019

💙 ”The role of the artist is to make the revolution irresistible.” ~ Toni Cade Bambara Honoured to be back in Paris with my colleagues for round two of @g7 Gender Equality Advisory Council meetings to complete our proposed document for the Biarritz Agreement. I had the opportunity to meet with @women7official (a coalition of civil society organizations & feminist leaders) who are advocating that @g7 make concrete commitments to finance feminist movements around the world. Financial commitments are essential - without them it’s impossible to implement gender equality laws and make them a reality in the world. I sincerely hope we can realise their vision of creating a feminist #G7!

@teatumjones have joined @goodonyou_app ⭐️ allowing them to vocalise the work they’ve been doing to move towards being a better, pro-social, sustainable and modern brand. ✨ I love that their SS19 collection was inspired by interviews with activists & campaigners (including @jusmarai 💛) working to End Violence Against Women & Girls! 🆘 With the awareness generated by #metoo, there is an increased demand for support services as more people are emboldened to name what happened to them.❣️Rape Crisis Centres❣️offer much-needed support to people who have been assaulted across England and Wales (@rapecrisisew), but demand way outstrips supply.❗️This time last year, there were 6,355 survivors on Rape Crisis waiting lists and these can be as long as 14 months.‼️ This means that if a survivor calls to look for support they may be turned away... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⌛️💷 Successive UK governments have failed to fund life-saving services. There are just 44 Rape Crisis Centres in England and Wales. 🎯 But the Istanbul Convention (which our Government will soon ratify) sets out a minimum provision of support for victims of rape which would require that there be 150 Rape Crisis Centres in England and Wales. 🚨 It’s simply unacceptable that a country like mine falls so far short of the minimum standards set across Europe. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📋❤️✍🏻 So on #IWD2019, I encourage you to sign Fern’s petition 👆🏻LINK IN BIO👆🏻and demand that Theresa May guarantees sustained 💰 funding for rape crisis support services, 💌 so the survivors of sexual violence can access the support they need. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🔗📋✍🏻 tinyurl.com/FernsPetition ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 💪🏻👩🏼 These are the words of 25-year-old Fern Champion, who was raped in 2016 and has launched a petition 💌 asking the Prime Minister to ensure that specialist rape counselling support is always available for everyone who seeks it: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤲🏻 💔 “By not adequately funding support services this Government is telling survivors that their recovery does not matter and by extension that they do not matter. When you have been raped, the vital, life-saving counselling should just be there when you need it.” 🙌🏻❤️👏🏻 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ☎️ RAPE CRISIS NATIONAL HELPLINE: 0808 802 9999 (rapecrisis.org.uk)

🛍 It's a minefield out there in the fashion world !! Fair trade, organic, sustainable, ethical, vegan, carbon neutral, artisanal, fast fashion, slow fashion. What does it all mean?! 🤷🏼‍♀️ Does it matter? What matters most? How do I choose? What is green washing? Which information or recommendations do I trust? 🥳 I was SO happy (and relieved!) to find the @goodonyou_app team because their app made the information easy and accessible for me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They take into account information from over 50 certification schemes, standard systems and NGO rating projects. Then they break down and rate brands based on their impact on 🧵 labour, 🌳 the environment and 🐑 animals, rating them either 'Great', 'Good', 'It's a Start', 'Not Good Enough' and 'We Avoid'. They also suggest ethical alternatives to anything you might be looking for. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Their articles are also brilliant, up to date and on the button. You can also favourite any brands you want to remember. 🤳🏼👩🏼‍💻 Check them out 😎

🥰💪🏻🌹 #Repost @gloriasteinem “3rd edition out today with a new foreword by my dear @emmawatson. I had a lot of fun updating it, hope you’ll feel the same reading it!” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📚❤️ “Why do I love Gloria’s writing so much? She makes what otherwise can be arduous and depressing reading, into something not only relatable but enjoyable...She believes in personal testimony - the sharing and passing on of women’s stories...She uncovers things that are obscured by today’s conditioning and normalizing which when exposed, are absolutely fascinating...Her plain common sense - calling things out as they are - will make you laugh out loud... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sometimes the world she envisions seems so far out and impossible to me or just wildly optimistic. But I have come to believe it is through radical feminism and the radical nature of Gloria’s message, that the job of equality will get done. I used to think the citadel didn’t have to topple. Now I believe it just might and should, and that we need to let old ways of being die for something new to be born. This book contains ideas for that new road, even though some were written almost forty years ago. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ People have asked me what the feminist movement needs to succeed. A new word? More men involved? I would rephrase the question. What obstacles need to be removed for us to succeed? In order to win our full humanity, in life, we have to confront the biggest superpower in the world: the patriarchy... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I never liked the idea of being a rebel. I played Hermione Granger, for goodness sake, who once famously compared the notion of being expelled to death! I remember thinking my first detention was the end of the world. But of all the things to fight for, I’d say freedom and respect are pretty good ones! And if I can do it with, and in the wake of, women like Gloria, all the better. And actually, as Hermione and I learned, being disruptive was quite fun after all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, have your mind blown, laugh out loud, think in

💫 One of the most memorable moments of TIME’S UP in the UK for me has been the launch of the Justice and Equality Fund (the UK’s version of the Legal Defence Fund), which aims to support women who have experienced harassment and abuse, improve accountability, and prevent future abuses from occurring. 💸 The JEF offers much-needed funds to existing expert services and to grassroots activism. 🌱 Many people don’t realise that very basic services which protect and care for women in the UK are under threat, and it’s incredible the difference the fund has made in a short space of time. 🌷 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Justice and Equality Fund (JEF) has already resourced the vital work of organisations like 💪🏾💗London Black Women's Project, who provide specialist support to women of colour and migrant survivors of abuse, and 👩🏻‍⚖️ Rights of Women, who will resource a free and confidential helpline led by women lawyers offering legal advice to women experiencing sexual harassment. ☎️❤️ The JEF has also supported keeping the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre for England and Wales helpline open and is resourcing the first rape crisis service provision in Northern Ireland in 12 years. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⭐️ I hope that more people will be inspired by the #TIMESUP anniversary to give at home here in the UK, so the Justice and Equality Fund can reach even more under-resourced organisations and campaign groups in 2019. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨ To donate go to uk.gofundme.com/Justice-and-Equality-Fund ✨

Thank you to everyone who has been part of TIME'S UP over the past year. 💗 From my sisters in the film industry to the activists and campaigners around the world who have supported us, I've been so inspired by the way people have reached out to each other, shared experiences and advice, and organised together as part of this movement for change. 🌍 Gender equality can only become a reality if we harness the transformative power of solidarity across professions and across borders. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There’s still a long way to go, but the achievements so far make me optimistic for a fairer future. 2018 was just the beginning. 💪🏻 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🎉 See link in bio for some reflections on the journey of Time’s Up that I shared with @cnn.

📚💌 Here’s an excerpt from the powerful November & December @oursharedshelf letter written by Brittney Cooper (@professor_crunk) & Rebecca Traister. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Dear Our Shared Shelf Readers, ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are honored to be able to begin a conversation with you about the power and consequence of women’s rage, both personal and political. We could not be prouder or more excited that Audre Lorde’s Sister Outsider, Brittney Cooper’s Eloquent Rage: A Black Feminist Discovers Her Superpower, and Rebecca Traister’s Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women’s Anger have been selected as the Our Shared Shelf books for November/December 2018. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The famed feminist activist, poet, and essayist Audre Lorde was one of the foremost thinkers on the importance of anger. In her essay, “The Uses of Anger,” which you will get to read in her book Sister Outsider, she wrote, “every woman has a well-stocked arsenal of anger potentially useful against those oppressions, personal and institutional, which brought that anger into being. Focused with precision it can become a powerful source of energy serving progress and change.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To encounter these words is to be changed by them. We have been changed by them. And we hope that women’s anger, put to use within progressive coalitions in which fury is expressed and treated as instructive, will in turn have the power to change the world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In this period, as we reckon with the rise of hard right authoritarian regimes around the world, many determined to roll back human rights—the very freedoms generations of angry women before us worked to win—today’s women are again being called to embrace our rage–its force, its potential, its messy complications. The fight against global patriarchy is far from over. Violence abounds but so does the possibility of building a new world from the wreckage of the old one.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✊🏾📝✊🏼 You can read the rest of their letter here: tiny.cc/OSSLetter

As part of their Incredible Women list featuring letters to remarkable changemakers, it was a great honour to be asked by @portermagazine to pay the deepest respect to the legacy of Dr Savita Halappanavar, whose death powered the determination of activists to change Irish abortion laws & fight for reproductive justice all over the world. ••• The planned new legislation has already been dubbed ‘Savita’s law’ by campaigners out of respect for a woman who didn’t want to become the face of a movement, but simply wanted a procedure to save her life. ••• A note on her memorial in Dublin read, “Because you slept, many of us woke.” Yet from Argentina to Poland, restrictive abortion laws still punish and endanger girls, women and pregnant people. Free, safe, legal and local abortion care is needed across the globe. In Savita’s memory, and on today’s 7th Annual March for Choice in Dublin, I’d like to say a huge thank you to all those who continue the fight for reproductive justice. ✊🏼 #mybodymychoice #freesafelegal #ARCMarch18

☀💦✍🏼 I am excited to announce that July/August's pick for @oursharedshelf is our first poet, @rupikaur_ , and her book of poems Milk and Honey 🍯🥛. Rupi Kaur is an Indian-born, Canadian-raised poet and artist. She chooses not to use upper case letters or punctuation in her poems as an ode to her native language, Punjabi. She travels the world, including recently to her native country India, performing her poems and drawing crowds of hundreds. Both of her books, Milk and Honey and The Sun and Her Flowers, have made the New York Times bestseller list, which for a poet, is astonishing. ••• Over my lifetime, I have fallen in and out of love with poetry. Performing poems was what got me into acting (I had a primary school teacher that made everyone learn one a week, and eventually I won a poetry recital competition!) In secondary school and at university, I loved deciphering the codes of poems in class discussion, but I honestly wondered if poetry would continue to feature in my life outside of an academic context. ••• Enter poets like @holliepoetry, @SabrinaMahfouz and Rupi Kaur- I demolished whole books in single sittings. Unlike poems I have often spent weeks unraveling, Rupi’s poems are not designed to obscure meaning or entertain too much ambiguity - they hit you like punches to the stomach. They are immediate, visceral and not easily digested. I am loathe to say Rupi has made poetry “accessible” because while this is the truth (Rupi’s poems and illustrations fit well into those famously square shaped Instagram frames), there is nothing easy or accessible about what Rupi chooses to talk about. In fact, the topics she chooses, are audacious. ••• Here is a 25-year-old girl saying the unsayable… to hundreds of thousands of people: that she has been raped, that at times she has been abused, that she bleeds. And sin of all sins… she actually likes the hair that grows on her body. Yes. She actually thinks it is beautiful. And that she is beautiful as God made her - what a

This week is #mentalhealthawarenessweek. A time to reflect on how gender plays a huge role in determining our mental health. _ People of all genders can feel constrained by social norms and expectations based on their gender and sexuality, and these expectations impact on our life and sense of self. _ People of all genders should feel free to be sensitive, to be strong, to be powerful. Yet the societies we live in often send us prescribed messages about what our gender roles and emotions should look and feel like. _ This #mentalhealthawarenessweek, I hope we can celebrate the diversity of our emotional lives as unique individuals, as that's what makes us beautifully remarkable.

I am proud to be part of this action with @5050x2020 #TIMESUP ••• Repost: @timesupnow ____ Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of our industry says otherwise,” Blanchett said, reading from a statement written by her and legendary director Agnes Varda, who delivered the speech in French. “As women, we all face our own unique challenges, but we stand together on these steps today as a symbol of our determination and our commitment to progress. We are writers, we are producers, we are directors, actresses, cinematographers, talent agents, editors, distributors, sales agents, and all of us are involved in the cinematic arts. And we stand today in solidarity with women of all industries. _ We expect our institutions to actively provide parity and transparency in their executive bodies and provide safe environments in which to work,” Blanchett continued. “We expect our governments to make sure that the laws of equal pay for equal work are upheld. We demand that our workplaces are diverse and equitable so that they can best reflect the world in which we actually live. A world that allows all of us in front and behind the camera, all of us, to thrive shoulder to shoulder with our male colleagues. _ The stairs of our industry must be accessible to all. Let’s climb.
