So homeschooling day 1 hasn’t been a breeze but we are moving along. Started with sight words and Uno and moved to piano scales and then brain games. And now an art lesson by @mo.willems.studio on Kennedy Center website and thank you notes (aka handwriting for Brady). Some math is still needed and Tuba practice for Brady and a little more reading to feel like we tackled it all. Question is when do I get to work?

When you go to a progressive school that shows kids how to apply what they learn in the classroom, they get to go explore machines and terrain parks that compliment the science they have learned about angles, measurements of landing zones and size while also taking into account accelerations and fall heights to build a safe terrain park. Spending the day in LA, loving how eco-friendly my hotel is. Big reusable bottles in the shower, water for my traveling water bottle and credits when I conserve water by not having housekeeping in my room. How can we get the big chains to do more of this? On this #worldhumanitarianday I can’t help but praise the work that @worldvisionusa is doing around the globe to feed the hungry, bring clean water, improve education, teach skills to those in need all over this big world. You can care for one child by sponsoring them on the world vision.org site. In any of the countries they are in. I saw the work they do first hand this month in Zambia and it was comprehensive and complex and important. And I can tell you the funds go to those in the most need in the villages. The children’s smiles were the best part of our trip to Zambia with @worldvisionusa!!! We traveled with 3 extra huge suitcases full of goodies including clothes, shoes, toys, games, hats, feminine hygiene and a few special things to give away. Here are some of the photos of Angela and a bunch of other amazing village kids enjoying the gifts we brought along. It was my hope to bring things of necessity as well as to just bring joy. Everyday I wore 2-3 cross bracelets from home and gave each one away to a different child. They each looked at them like a special treasure they were given. Here are Angela and our sponsor child Vera receiving theirs. The @nerdscandy company also sent me 18lbs of sweeties 🍬to share and they went over huge when there were lots of kids and we didn’t have enough shoes or hats for them all. They all LOVED getting the little boxes that rattled and once we showed them that they opened to candy, even the adults were thrilled. I will never forget those smiles on those precious faces. And my mom fell so in love with Angela’s photo that she is now sponsoring her. ✨ The first pic I have the bracelet on but the next two, you can see Angela holding it on her arm. 📷- @heathernklinger

It was such a joy meeting the children of Zambia this week and bringing them smiles with some of our gifts. We handed over food to families in desperate need and carried a few fun things with us to share as well. This 3 year old is Maria who has severe malnutrition but thanks to the work of @worldvisionusa she is getting stronger everyday. In our travels around the Moyo tribe villages we met a young group of girls who were part of the @worldvisionusa Savings Group. The girls save their money in a locked box from villages all around and are taught basic saving skills like interest and loans. They can use the loans to start businesses like growing and selling crops and livestock. We bought a chicken (masons purchase) and a bunch of local crops like cabbage and tomatoes and bananas from the girls and then delivered them to our sponsor sisters for dinner. You can see the joy in their faces to have a chicken. They usually save chickens for Christmas celebrations so this was a special night for Vera, Civiness and Lyness and the other 10 family members in their house. (For more about our sponsor children see my post from a few days back) 🥬🍌🍅🍗🐓 PS Lyness is wearing one of my favorite tee shirts from Lake Tahoe that I gave her. @nativetothisplace We have seen a lot of American athletics teams and places on the tees here and it’s amazing how small the world can really be.

This week has been an unforgettable experience as we travel to some deep rural areas of the Southern Province of Zambia during this drought and dry season. We had the opportunity to meet our sponsor sisters, one girl we sponsor for each of our boys. They are Lyness (13), Civiness (9) and Vera (6). We met the whole family who recently lost their dad and were forced to move south but during the drought their crops didn’t do well so they often have hungry days. We brought so many gifts, some necessary and some fun. Mason taught the big brothers to play American football and we taught them to play UNO. They showed us their garden and gave us some greens called rape as well as some wooden stools they carved for us. Our families are now joined and bonded for life! I will pray for them and send them gifts often. You too can sponsor a child (or 3) thru the @worldvisionusa website in my bio. It truly makes a difference. Not just in one child’s life but in the whole village that might benefit from a fresh water well, school, goat gifting or farming program. Been spending the past few days in the most rural and hard to reach places in the hills of southern Zambia. So much to share but will do that later. Here is a little scenery from our very long and bumpy daily drives. Please pray for these villages that need fresh water, food and so many basic essentials. And pray for @worldvisionUSA and the incredible staff and the important work they do around the world for children born into extreme poverty! Their programs are so well thought out and put together. They not only drill the wells, they start savings programs and training plumbers for repairs; they teach girls to save their money and start businesses to keep them from being reliant on marriage for support; they gift goats and teach them to be veterinarians and share their knowledge. They teach them how to farm and start co-operatives to work with neighboring villages to make and sell crops together. You can support them by going to the link in my bio. Spent the most magical few days with my cousins Nancy and Olivia while adjusting to the African time change. It’s been a bucket list item for me to visit Nancy ever since she moved to Botswana many decades ago. Thanks to the mission trip with @worldvisionusa who invited me to Zambia, I had the opportunity to be closer to her and finally see her African life. And it came at a miraculous time when she is fighting a brave battle with cancer and could use some family love before her next scan next week which we pray will show a reduction, or better yet an elimination, in the tumors. Praying for a full and total recovery for her, and strength for her family to keep her energy levels and positivity up as we head off on our next adventure. Love you Nance!

So today’s eco friendly tip is to buy these awesome bamboo cloths that replace paper towels. I’ve been using these for about 2 months and have loved them! Super absorbent and work great for my poached eggs in the morning and especially for little dirty hands full of ketchup and syrup at each meal. I still use paper towels but not nearly as much! I found mine on amazon.

3 young lives lost in a senseless tragic shooting with a weapon civilians shouldn’t be able to purchase. This breaks my heart. Rest In Peace Trevor (who was about to graduate and get married) Keyla (who did chores all morning and was going to celebrate her birthday next week and wanted a puppy) and Stephen ( who was only 6 and shot with his mom and grandmother). The one part of this mass shooting that is hurting my heart a little more is that Keylas family couldn’t find her for a full day and finally got a call that she was gone. Meaning that she died alone and afraid at 13years old. Hate will always try to win, the devil will always have his hooks in someone, somewhere. But as Americans, we don’t have to make it so easy for evil to prevail. 💔

We have liftoff!! 4 summers we have tried to teach this kid to ride a bike and we finally succeeded. He just wasn’t interested before and didn’t care how many of his friends took off on 2 wheels. He would barely ride with training wheels so he never got the feel. These videos probably aren’t very exciting unless you know Tucker but his little “don’t you want to hug me” and the silly phrases “i want to be impressive” and determination are amazing to me! #ItsLikeRidingABike

Do you #compost? After reading that dumping food scraps in landfills releases massive amounts of methane into the atmosphere, I am now obsessed with composting. ( what you see here is old christmas cookie ingredients on top and left over Indian food underneath and of course stale taco shells 🌮 ) I found a company near my home that brings a this little bucket every week and hauls away our food scraps for about $30/month. I add my tea bags, egg shells, and floral arrangements to the bucket and I can get the compost for my garden. I tried to research composting at home but I didn’t have the time for it so I decided to go with this route which makes my conscious feel a little better. I think we need to start to petition US waste management companies to compost as well as recycle and landfill. That would help with our water systems too for people that put their scraps down the sink. If your water company doesn’t remove the food and compost it, it either creates algae blooms in the water which is bad, or it goes in a landfill creating methane. So let’s complain/ petition/ beg until they compost!

Just a reminder that we are borrowing the planet. Let’s not destroy it before our great grandkids get to enjoy it! So many small steps lead to bigger and better things. Start small by refusing strands and by bringing your own reusable bags to the store. Then start saying no to bottled water and carrying a refillable one and coffee cup in the car. Next ditch find products that use glass or metal instead of plastics, like ketchup, milk or vinegar. Buy in bulk and research Composting in your yard or neighborhood/ city (mine does a pick up weekly for $32). But you can’t do it all today! Start small. Turn off lights( leaving TVs on is a pet peeve) and water more often and ditch the straw today. One step at a time!!!! 🌎🌍🌏🌍🌎🌎🌏🌍🌎🌍🌎

Today I’m focusing on paper-free as well as #PlasticFree. Went to the library to get a new book to get excited about our next big trip!! Libraries are awesomeness because they mean everyone has access to great books and fun neighborhood activities for free!! It’s especially great for the kids and reduces the amount of trees destroyed and shipping carbon footprint. I like my ebook but I really love the feel of a book in my hand. I love my home library but I’m thinking more about donating to the library 📚and borrowing what they have. It’s like a blockbuster for books! 📺

Today’s attempt to be #PlasticFree. Invested in a French press (Mark loved the one in our hotel in New Zealand) and using my loose leaf tea instead of tea bags which have plastics in them. Heating up plastics releases toxins that mess with your hormones and endocrine system. So I’m hoping this will be a change for my body💪🏼, my carbon footprint🌱 and my attitude. 😹

Some ways I’m making changes in my bathroom routine this #PlasticFreeJuly. Deordorant bar from @lush, washable bamboo makeup remover pads (which work better than any makeup remover I’ve ever used!) and glass bottle products from companies like @muradskincare @skinceuticals @burtsbees @seedphytonutrients. Oh and bamboo toothbrushes for the kids not shown. Mark and I use electric toothbrushes which is helpful since you only replace the tip once every few months.

My face when I see someone using a single- use plastic water bottle! It’s #PlasticFreeJuly people. Let’s all make small changes that will lead to new habits this month. Who’s with me? @plasticfreejuly Start with refusing straws when you order drinks, carry your own water bottles (especially to the gym, airport, and beach) and bring your own shopping bags. Already do those all those? Try a deodorant bar, bamboo toothbrush, replacing plastic bottle hand soap 🧼 with a good old fashioned soap bar and mesh produce 🍎 bags in the bulk food or produce aisle of the store.
