We end our trip in Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. This is one of the great wonders of the world and a destination for most who have the opportunity to visit this wondrous country but it also has a special meaning and connection to @everymomcounts. The Taj Mahal (Crown of the Palace) is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (reigned from 1628 to 1658) to house the tomb of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal; it also houses the tomb of Shah Jahan himself. Mumtaz died in childbirth with her 14th child. This would not be so surprising in the 1600’s. But today, more than 300,000 women and girls die globally bringing life into the world. Every Mother Counts is dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere. We invest in community-led programs working to improve equitable access to quality and respectful maternity care in India, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Guatemala, Haiti and the United States. Always good to reconnect with your five year old self. Thank you, Jaipur. It’s been EPIC. This is an elephant sanctuary. They were rescued and are protected from typical tourist attractions and are living comfortably here. There are three females aged 39-50 living a far better existence than they had previously.

This is my 6th visit to India but my first with @everymomcounts and also the first time in Assam. Assam is known for its tea plantations, where the majority of workers are Indigenous Adivasi who were forcibly brought to the northeast province from central India in the 1900s under British colonial rule. Today, approximately one million Assam tea plantation workers make less than minimum wage (176 INR or $2.50 USD per day) and suffer from poor working and living conditions. Pregnant women in Assam face many of the same barriers to health and care that many other poor, marginalized pregnant women in India amd around the world experience, including a lack of access to adequate housing, health care, nutrition, sanitation, and safe water. In Assam, these barriers are compounded by difficulties getting access to the services they have rights to (including iron supplements and prenatal care) due to poor budget allocation and lack of government oversight over clinics in Assam providing maternal health services. @nazdeek1 is working to address all of this by providing training to paralegals who come from these communities to improve the quality of life and health outcomes within this underserved and appreciated population. Despite all of the above, we were welcomed graciously and shown many beautiful cultural aspects during our stay here. The tea industry is a global one but most are unaware of the working conditions of the people who pick the leaves. Each woman in this picture picks 24-30 kgs per day. That’s roughly 50 lbs. even when pregnant or with a baby on their chest. #nowyouknow

We took in some sights in Delhi yesterday after an incredible first day in the capital of India visiting some sites of our partners @nazdeek and the incredible paralegals they have trained with the support of @everymomcounts. All in the wake of Trumps visit here and the violence that insued during those few days. These paralegals are demanding accountability and access to basic human rights which include bathrooms, healthcare and safe housing. We are headed to Assam to see and learn more about their labor rights work with tea workers over the next few days. This is an important moment in history here as citizenship in under scrutiny and marginalized populations pay the price. Sound familiar? Stay tuned... 🇳🇪

Saw the news about @rafsimons joining @prada this morning and then saw this photo turn up in my feed. This photo was taken by @therealpeterlindbergh in 1994. We shot the campaign in Palermo, Sicily at Il Gattopardo where Visconti filmed “The Leopard” in 1963. The photos were inspired by #AugustSander. We had the place to ourselves. When I was 19 I signed an exclusive contract with #calvinklein which was exciting and an honor. This photo was taken during that time by my friend @herbritts The collection was inspired by @kellyaklein who was an equestrian and Calvin’s then wife and muse. We got the chance to spend some time together in Wellington this weekend and it brought back many memories...And now, I get the thrill of watching my daughter accomplish so much more than I ever got to pretend to be on a horse.

Happy Birthday @herbritts I loved seeing all the beautiful iconic photos you have taken in honor of your birthday today. While I have so many memories in Los Angeles and from travels around the world, and the images as mementos of them all, this might be the favorite. We shot this image for @gq in your pool in Hollywood. You loved this house and took many classic Herbski photos in this location. This is one of my most classic portraits from the era as well. You were always a dream to work with. Fun, respectful and you treated me like an equal, even when I was a teenager and your were an adult- a true friend. You are still so loved... (1987-ish)

It’s truly an honor to be one of the 15 women featured on the September cover of @britishvogue’s #ForcesforChange issue. Every cover I have shot for this magazine since my first in 1986 has been special and with each cover shoot and story there’s a greater story behind it. This one is uniquely different than all the others because a. it’s 34 years later and b. I share it with women I have admired and respected from a distance. This cover has brought us virtually closer and has helped to amplify our individual voices by bringing us together. The reason I started @everymomcounts, the organization I founded in 2010, is my belief that every woman deserves the same access to safe and respectful maternity care and that every mother deserves the chance to not only survive pregnancy and childbirth but also to thrive in motherhood. Happy Birthday #AudreyHepburn This photo was originally taken for an editorial for @vanityfair which never ran. Probably because it was shot in black & white. Eventually an Italian magazine published the photos. I was 17 or 18 at the time and excited about every opportunity to work with and learn from the amazingly talented photographer #StevenMeisel and his team at that time #FrancoisNars and @oribecanales. @andreltalley styled the shoot and we recreated some of our favorite Audrey looks and moments on screen in #breakfastattiffanys but with a downtown twist. We shot this portrait in front of #TowerRecords on Broadway, instead of in front of @tiffanyandco 🖤

Boom! One down, four more races to go this year! This photo by @vivianesassenstudio was taken after I completed my 3rd Kilimanjaro Half Marathon in Tanzania last month. Next up is the #bigsurmarathon2019 where I will be running my 9th Marathon for @everymomcounts. This will be my first full marathon on the west coast, and in my birth state of California. I started running with @runteamemc in 2011 to raise awareness and funds to improve access to essential maternity care around the world. Can’t think of a better reason or excuse to train and run than for a cause like Maternal Health and making quality, respectful maternity care more accessible for all. Together, we have made a huge impact since then. With your support, and the support of so many others, we are making a difference in the lives of so many. Adieu to the Kaiser. Karl loved taking pictures, often in the wee hours and in his home after feeding us all and entertaining us with his stories and the antiquities and artifacts he surrounded himself with. He was incredibly generous in every way. Whether hecwas sending you flowers with a hand written note welcoming you back to Paris every season, or insisting you go downstairs for a shopping spree on Rue Cambon after a fitting on your way out, or giving you the book about the Ballets Russes off his library shelf he caught you admiring in between shots. Karl didn’t miss a thing. He always called me “Miss Turlington” and that made me feel respected and at ease in his company. About tonight! OMG @themarcjacobs invited me to close his beautiful show tonight and I couldn’t resist. A. I have known and loved this man since I met him at age 16. B. I turned 50 this year and have arrived at a place where “Why the F not” is the answer that comes up when I ask myself questions. C. I have a 15 year old daughter who I desperately want to see and hear me and this is a medium that “speaks”to her. So, thank you’s are in order, @karliekloss @gigihadid and @kaiagerber and all the lovely young women I have met briefly in the recent past or met tonight. You are ALL women I would want my daughter to emulate in your grace, confidence and elegance. Always reassuring to have @guidopalau @diane.kendal @stephenjonesmillinery and @kegrand encouraging you on and making you look and feel your best. And while that muscle did not hurt as much as I would have thought to exercise again, after 20 plus years, I am not certain I could beat the experience of tonight or wish to try! Now I can say exactly when and for whom I last walked a runway and feel so proud and grateful to all the forces of nature who made it possible! 😘@1.800.newbold & Congratulations for all of the amazing people who put shows like this together. Our sweet Fitzgerald left us very early this a.m. to join our other beloved pup Mickey. We got Fitzy to be a companion for Mickey when I was pregnant with my second child. We were worried about him losing some of the attention to the kids. Fitzy and his sister Daisy, who belongs to my sister Erin’s family, arrived in the middle of the summer in 2005. We had moved into a new home and everything was in dissaray, as is often the case when a family is about to grow. I had a much tougher first trimester with my son and was just so tired trying to get our daughter to sleep in her bed and just go to sleep generally. This was the long days/short years period of our lives. The first ones anyway. This dog won our hearts pretty quickly though. He was so gentle and patient. We nearly lost him when he chased after a deer across a highway and was hit by a car but he came back strong and after that we called him “our miracle pup.” And that’s who he remained until about 2:00 a.m. today. He wasn’t feeling great after Christmas and before we left for my birthday trip to Argentina. He had a tumor on his neck that suddenly quadrupled in size. We thought he might not be around when we got home but he waited for us, the little gentleman that he always was. He underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumor on Wednesday and they removed more cancer once they opened him up. He was already pretty weak but the surgery took it out of him and his bloodcount continued to plummet. I spent the afternoon with him yesterday and came home thinking we’d give him the weekend to see if he could rally but by 10:30 last night, it was clear that his condition had worsened and he was having trouble breathing. We drove up to see him with the kids so they could say goodbye and then we let him go. He was peaceful and comfortable in the end. I miss him so much.

Happy Birthday to us! My daughter Grace was born 10.23.03 and her birth changed my life forever. We had every option available to us and we opted for our midwife led team to support us in a birthing center in NYC that is soon to close forever. She was two weeks overdue when she entered the world, the force that she is. On her time, in her own way. We were lucky to receive the care we got but too many are not as fortunate. Grace is my greatest teacher and also a fellow woman who I respect and admire daily. Thank you for the blessing and awakening through your birth, daughter. I am grateful for the gifts you bring and the welcomed challenge of mothering you. I love you with my whole self. Happy Mother’s Day to our Mama and to my sisters! These are the women who taught me all my early life lessons. My mom was my first home and she taught me that there was a big world out there. She introduced me to so many special places, the best places, others only dream about or see on a map. My sister Kelly allowed me to assist her in the birth of her daughter and then I stood in to comfort her son till she came home from the hospital the next day. I named both of my sister Erin’s daughters and love them all like my own.They taught me through their pregnancies and postpartum what was expected and needed, what I wanted to replicate and not, and I am greatful for every lesson they have provided me since. Today is International Day of the Midwife. Midwives are the system’s experts in supporting uncomplicated, healthy childbirth. I chose a midwife to deliver both of my kids and am so grateful to have received such loving and high quality maternity and well woman care since. This photo was taken last summer at the Asociacion Corazon del Agua in Guatemala City. This is Gabriela Melendez and the second class of students to graduate from the first university accredited midwifery school in Guatemala. I can’t wait to return with @everymomcounts next month to see them again. Thinking of these midwives and all the midwives today as I head down to DC for the @marchformoms #idm18 #ConMadre

Every now and again an image turns up in my feed that I have never seen which is always interesting and a good test of my memory skills. This one is a mystery! I remember meeting and hanging out with the legendary #lizaminelli whom I came to know through these two legends in their own right, #stevenmeisel & @kevynaucoin, but I cannot for the life of me recall the moment when this photo was captured.
