I accepted an award on behalf of @abcmodernfam from the @paleycenter tonight alongside @therealdebramessing for @nbcwillandgrace. “Will & Grace”, for me, was a lighthouse during the years I was struggling with my sexuality. I feel very privileged to be that show for others now. “Will & Grace” held the door open for us and I am proud to hold it open for other shows long after we are done shooting our last season. This may be my first “sappy post of Modern Family entering its last season.” Happy Birthday Julie! Fun fact: the cast of Modern Family came together and met 10 years ago TO. THIS. DAY. for our first informal table read before filming the pilot episode of the show. @itsjuliebowen did her best to keep her birthday a secret from us...not because she didn’t want to celebrate with a bunch of strangers (which I’m sure she didn’t) but also because she wasn’t big on celebrating her birthday at all! Over the past ten years we have all become family and even though she still gives us the face that’s making in this photo when we start to sing for her, now she knows it’s coming from a place of deep love & intentional loving ridicule...because hey, that’s what families do...especially fake TV siblings. Growing up closeted and gay in the Southwest, I didn’t have a very broad community of like minded individuals to connect with; I didn’t have social media or the internet to expose me to humankind beyond Albuquerque New Mexico. I had to actively seek out lifelines to the world that I instinctively knew was waiting for me. This play, for me, was the first bridge to a world beyond Albuqurque. It educated me and woke the activist in me. It excited me as an actor, confirming my desire for a career in the arts. It set a bar for me emotionally, proving the power of thoughtful writing. It’s one of the main reasons I do what I love to do. I am just one of many people who have been made better by this play. I am so grateful that this production exists and that I was able to experience it. @angelsbway
