We arrive at a wall of ice and snow rising from the slope. “This is perfect,” @carolinewaregeorge says, before taking me off line. Perfect for what, I ask. “Ice climbing.” . . What? I’m not doing that! . . As Paul and Nick rig the ropes, Caroline introduces @adavecalledyeti and I to the basics of ice climbing. “It’s all in the wrist,” she says of the axe. “Kick the wall like a soccer ball,” that’s where the crampons come in. . . But I wasn’t really getting it. My axes didn’t cut deep enough, my crampons were slipping, and I couldn’t get off the ground. I was over it already. . . Caroline attaches herself to the belay line that will secure her climb and descent on the ice, with Paul as safety on the other end. . . She expertly cuts and kicks her way up to the top of the ice formation, and descends with the elegance of a spider on silk. “You’re next,” Paul tells me. What? . . “I’m not doing that!” I point to the wall. “I can’t do that! That’s crazy!” . . “Sure you can,” he laughs. . . Caroline ties the rope to my harness with a figure eight knot, before handing me two axes. “You got this, Joy.” I didn’t believe her one bit, but I went for it anyway. There was no other option; “can’t” is not in these people’s vocabulary. . . To my surprise, I got off the ground… and kept going. . . With Caroline coaching from below (“Push your hips into the ice before you swing!”) I danced my way up the wall. Push, swing, kick, kick! Push, swing, kick, kick! . . As I made my way, all that mattered was the ice in front of me, and the path ahead. And I felt the great pleasure of doing what I’m supposed to be doing, the way I’m supposed to do it. . . I’ve taken helicopter rides before but nothing like this. I’ve even landed on a snowy mountaintop, but nothing like this. . . Ascending a mountain far above the tree-line and landing on a glacier? Absolutely nothing like this. . . We didn’t come to the #FranzJosefGlacier just to cruise around in a helicopter and sightsee. We came to explore. We came for an adventure. . . The helicopter dropped us off with our gear for the night, then took off back down the mountain., eventually fading from sight and sound. . . I stood up to take it all in: the snow and the ice, the rocks and the peaks, the sky and the silence. It was both of this world and otherworldly. And all I could do was smile. . . I took one step and froze. “I can’t do it.” . . . We were halfway through a beautiful 6 mile hike where the biggest challenge was keeping our feet dry while crossing a stream. Now I’m on a survival course that wasn’t on the itinerary. . . . Just a few minutes before, after watching @adavecalledyeti and @eliza_earle cruise across the wire bridge, I thought, “Yeah, I got this.” I have good balance. I’m good. . . . But all of that confidence floated down the river once I climbed up onto the bridge, saw the river below, and looked out to the other side. It was way sketchier, higher, and longer than it appeared from the ground. . . . I tried to breathe the fear away but all I could think about was slipping off the wire and falling onto the rocks as the river carried me away. . . . “Is there another way across,” I ask #EddieBauer guide @carolinegeorge and our #NewZealand guide Bob. They look at each other and don’t even bother to answer the question, but offer an encouraging, “You can do it,” instead. . . . I look across the bridge and down below again. I try to lift my foot, but it’s stuck. “No, really, I can’t!” . . . “I’ll do it with you,” says Caroline before climbing up the ladder to join me on the bridge.“We’re going to do this together. One step at a time. One breathe at time.” And that’s what we did. . . . With Caroline’s help, I was able to focus on my steps and breathe, and not my ‘death by river rocks’. What happens when a control freak hops in a raft with a stuntman, an adventure racer and an elite Eddie Bauer alpine guide on a remote river in New Zealand? She learns to go with the flow. . . . I am not a water sport enthusiast and rafting is not on my bucket list. But I said yes anyway. The idea of floating from river to sea in a part of the world few get to see was something my mind could embrace. But actually getting my body in the raft was a whole other thing. . . . So there I stood on the banks of the Hollyford River, listening to the safety briefing about what to do when you fall out of the raft. “Any questions,” they ask. Yeah, why did I say yes to this adventure again? But I held my peace and got in the raft anyway. Turns out, that was the hardest part. . . . Our 3 raft crew paddled almost 20 miles in 3 days, under the sun and in the rain, in water descended from the towering glaciers that guided our path; water so fresh, we never hesitated to drink. . . . We spent our nights in cabin style “huts” along the route, surrounded by tall ferns and moss covered trees, comforted by good food, great company and a warm fire. . . . And every night, I went to bed proud that I let the flow take me where it wanted to go.
