In Manila there is an amazing National museum of natural history . It is in an extraordinary neoclassical building and the collections are comprised of all the natural wonders of this archipelago of more than 7500 islands - botanical , geological and zoological wonders We were treated to a delicious multi course meal of local specialties prepared by leading chefs in Manila What a treat!!!!!!!!! One of the wall hangings is a monumental image of a Tarsier -An indigenous species- and the tiniest of primates

Our dessert last night on #mount desert island I finally got hot use an antique porcelain lobster mold. We made a fresh raspberry jelly with which we lined the mold It had to be a bit firm to insure the sure release of the contents from the mold . The delicious and delicate vanilla panna cotta then filled the mold and all was chilled overnight The mold was turned over in a large platter and warmed ever so slightly with a little butane torch Once released the entire remained surface of the platter was coated with a jelly made from the oddly blue liqueur Curacao That formed the sea around the lobster and it added just enough “punch” to the dessert All in all a successful first try at using this beautiful lobster mold

About 100 stems of lilies grown on my farm in Bedford were just arranged in the great hall of Skylands by none other than @seenbysharkey We transported the cut lilies by truck to Maine to fill the house with unsurpassed scent and beauty!! If you live in zone 4,5,or 6 try planting some STEWARTIA trees They are so beautiful and glower abundantly right after the magnolias, usually concurrently with the Kousa dogwoods The blossoms drop all around the trees and the ground looks littered with silken flowers -and the trunks of the trees are patterned with exfoliating bark!

The company that has so carefully processed my trees by tub grinding is #materialprocessors It costs a significant amount to "rent" the grinder and the operator and depending on the job , will take a day , a week, a month to complete the grinding process But the resulting material is really useful in any landscape And botanical gardens, parks as well as large private farms and properties use this kind of machinery Good luck!!!

We have had a lot of forest work done this year -broken and old and fallen trees are collected in one place and every two years our friends from Materials Processors come and spend a couple days double grinding the trunks and stumps and roots into fine , usable "mulch" which is then mixed into black gold with the horse and donkey manure and all the poultry droppings We use this to refurbish the soil, to mulch, and to further beautify our property It is a great way to conserve, to repurpose ,and enrich the land It is also 2000% better than burning!!!! And polluting!!!

Bedford eggs for maine breakfast So delicious on maine made bread We also had maine grown cracked oats and maple syrup, yellow mangoes , cappuccinos made with Martha coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice -to answer all the questions about how to turn the eggs I don't This cast iron skillet cooks slowly and with very little butter yet the eggs do not stick - the beauty of very well cured /seasoned iron- cook over med low heat and slowly -the eggs cook perfectly -not too runny ,not underdone, just perfect .

Today's haul!!! The chickens are providing us with a nice assortment of sizes and colors Because they are fed organic pellets and lots of fresh greens and kitchen scraps they never really take time off from laying Their coops are heated but I do not try to trick them with 24 hour lighting etc And they get to be outdoors whenever they desire! You cannot believe what we picked in my greenhouse yesterday -temperatures outside 5degrees!!!! All citrus organically grown in pots Picked and washed they are delicious -calamondins and tangelos are excellent the large Meyer lemon is dwarfed by the giant ponderosa lemon which is silly next to a kumquat, bright orange blood limes, clementines Buddha hand lemon citron and fragrant Meyer lemons are just a few of the varieties we grow . limes come next!!!!!

When I take the dogs to the big pool enclosure for a free run I use the Martha dog leads . today Bette Noir did not want to give up her lead she wanted me to put it back on as soon as I removed it I think she wanted to walk and not be put out to run . hard to figure out these complex pets!! By the way for long walks I prefer using a harness to prevent strain in the dogs 'necks and throats

SAD! Dangerous leaning trees being professionally removed by #Sav a tree. Six 100ft+ spruce had to be meticulously cut and lifted piece by piece from the Shade Garden. Sad because taking away 100 year old trees is Sad But we are carefully recycling the wood of these mighty giants. It will be milled into wide two inch thick boards to be used as flooring in a building project

While I was in Tasmania my master bathroom had a serious problem A magnifying makeup mirror , sitting on the back of the toilet , happened to catch the rays if the afternoon sun , reflecting them directly onto the painted window sill . The light was so intense that the paint scorched and smoked And almost ignited ! My housekeeper smelled the burning paint and stopped the problem Please take care not to let such a queer thing happen in your home!!!!!

Rather than buying lunch for the television crew yesterday at the farm I cooked the lunch meal I used two young roosters from the farm freezer, onions, carrots, garlic, squash, celery, fusilli, black beans (cooked in the MarthaStewart pressure cooker) cabbage, garnishes were garden parsley chopped with olive oil, and tons of grated Parmesan cheese Buttered ,toasted country bread ( the stable aga stove is a great toaster ) was for dipping in the very flavorful broth

My very first Uber! I ordered the most expensive version to pick me up on Fifth Avenue and 57th street in front of Tiffany's The first Uber did not show up The second Uber came ten minutes later and parked halfway down 57 th street where I could not see the license plate Then we were facing east when I had to go west and south Took twenty minutes to face south west Etc etc it only took a bit more than one hour On top of it all the car was a mess inside and out!!!!!!!! And I want Uber to succeed! I have been a fan of the concept since day one!!!!!

Had some friends over last evening for an autumnal dinner -one of my favorite dishes is traditional French Pot Au Feu and no one makes it better than chef Pierre @pstailoredevents Dinner started with white truffle risotto , a red endive salad with Warren pears from @froghollowfarm , and giant platters of veal shank, beef shin, Poached capon, saucisson a l'ail, cabbage carrots potatoes parsnips Dessert was fresh pomegranate sorbet made from #Pomwonderful fruit , brown butter shortbreads and whipped cream

Just finished making fourteen quarts of light pink and dark pink applesauce from my orchard apples at Cantitoe farm It's very easy to make healthy and nutritious applesauce without any sugar whatsoever Quarter and core apples Fill six quart pan with apples , add juice if two lemons, one cup water Bring to boil, simmer covered until very tender Cool a bit, put thru a food mill gently, discarding skins No sugar But with autumn sweet apples , it's sweet enough
