So on our recent sojourn up the I-5 through Washington State we swung off of that mighty, life-giving freeway (the Mississippi River of the western states) to visit the houses I grew up in. We didn’t knock on any doors because that would have been weird but we did stalk some driveways (which is also weird). First up? My rental home in Olympia, Wa for K-2 (front and back), then our rented house in Lake Forest Park for 3-8 and the “fancy” condo across the street we bought and lived in for 9th and 10th grade. I also included my elementary school and it’s cafeteria/auditorium where I gave my very first performance as Schroeder in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Isn’t it incredible, for those over a certain age, the flood of visceral sensations that flow around your body when you visit childhood homes and those sacred, ordinary places steeped in memory?

Ode to a Champion - Oona Wilson-Reinhorn (2004-2019) You just showed up. Like a brown champion of doggishness. With your waggish eyes that said, “I belong here. I’m yours. You’re mine. Let’s do this.” You were equal parts splendid and evil. Ready with a radiant smile that said, “Here’s the dog of the century! The San Fernando Valley has its canine and it’s name is Oona!” And don’t get me started on the mud puddles. You would plop right into them like a pig into stew, wild-eyed and dreaming of the doggy olympics. And when Walter came home from the hospital you laid right next to his basinet like the Cerebus of Los Angeles, fierce and loyal. You loved that boy. And how. Fence guarder. Suple coated couch lover. Pet petter petted. Snuggler of royalty. Queen of the pack. You loved your cookies and where you’re going there are cookies aplenty. And big fields of wiley dogs and boys like Walter to play with all day long. And couches to snuggle on and that one big mud puddle in the sky to lie in and wiggle in and be as naughty as you ever want to be.

So I was killing some time in the soulless mall-scape of the Phoenix Sky Harbor International airport when I stumbled upon the non-denominational “chapel.” It’s essentially just a quiet little room with a tiled floor, some churchy chairs and no religious symbology to be seen. At the apse of the humble, shabby space was not a cross or a lectern but this poster, mounted on the wall. I’ve seen this poster before. Or one like it. As a member of the Baha’i Faith, which acknowledges the essential truth and divinity of all the worlds major faiths, the universality of the “Golden Rule” as a common thread that runs through every major spiritual tradition (as well as many secular ones) is a relatively well-discussed and pondered idea. But what struck me is how NEEDED all these little phrases ARE during this corrosive, divisive time. Basically every issue we have going on right now can be solved by all parties sitting down and reading their way through this particular starburst of wise religious sayings. As we think about how others might feel about what we’re about to say or do and weigh whether or not we would like that said or done to us, our compassion for the other grows. And compassion for those most different from us is where it’s all at.

An update from @lidehaiti #repost ・・・ Black smoke rises up from the streets of Haiti today. Not long ago what hung in the air over streets in the Artibonite were banners painted by LIDE girls, declaring “Edikasyon pa yon Ikrim” (Education is not a crime). But again this week in Haiti, education has been made as illusive as the air as burning tires, random gunfire, and protests that quickly turn violent prevent girls and all youth from attending school. We are again on shelter in place, and so we thank our friend Cesar Bougon Massena over at Artists Institute for sharing his images of this heartbreaking scene.

The girls of @lidehaiti are fighting climate change with a song. Read about it below and please consider becoming a monthly donor. ・・・ We are simply blown away by this incredible song ---written and performed by the Lidè girls which seeks to spread the word to their families, villages, and the global community about climate change and to offer some daily solutions to Haiti’s burgeoning environmental crisis.* This educational initiative came out of the newest addition to our LIDE curriculum, called TRANSITIONS, envisioned by our 99% Haitian staff and facilitated by our bright and inspiring young interns. "Transitions" is a bridge program to help Lidè girls transfer the creative skills they've learned in our programs and transform them into visionary, service-based solutions and apprenticeships in their communities. Please join our growing team of partners, supporters and collaborators to help us spread this message across Haiti and to help grow "Transitions" and our community empowerment efforts! The greatest way you can help is to become a monthly donor! Even 5$ a month will go a LONG way in supporting the grass roots education of these precious and powerful girls. Link to become recurring donor in bio or text LIDE to 44321. *Current statistics show that Haiti is one of the most vulnerable countries on earth when it comes to the impacts of climate change, according to the latest report from the Global Climate Risk Index. #ClimateChange #Haiti #WorldEnvironmentDay #Deforestation #CapacityBuilding #CapacityStrengthening #joinus

So my friend Jamey texted me this photo. Looks pretty innocent at first, right? But when you learn that he and his sister are African American, the photo turns instantly chilling. This was hung in a tree in her front yard in suburban Los Angeles, to be found by her seventeen year-old daughter. When the police were called they said, essentially, “what’s the big deal?” Yolanda lost it. What’s the big deal? Well, officer, the noose is the symbol of lynching which was used to hang thousands of African Americans, especially by the Klan. Granted, this is a pretty lame noose. Might have been made by some local kids or something. Who knows. But the fact is it is as strong a symbol of racial hatred, violence and oppression as a Swastika. Many folks are in denial about the extent to which racism exists in our country in 2019. Just ask a Black Person. They will tell you stories. Jamey told me today that last year, while playing golf, he was looking for his ball in the brush and a white guy who wanted to play through called out “Hey, you can hurry up, we don’t have you picking cotton anymore!” Not sure if he was trying to be funny or not but literally Jamey’s great grandfather was an ACTUAL SLAVE on a plantation and was regularly beaten there. That’s not that long ago. Great grandfather. And, perhaps, a relative or two of Jamey’s were lynched. Or saw a lynching. Or heard of a lynching. And now, his niece gets to be reminded of what hate looks like. Right in her own front yard in suburban LA.

Just over five years ago, I received an illustrated portrait of Dwight from the talented young artist Jessi Zazu, frontwoman of the band Those Darlins. Since then, the picture's hung in my office. Unfortunately, on September 12, 2017 Zazu passed away of cervical cancer, at the age of 28. To continue her work, and further her legacy, Zazu's family founded Jessi Zazu, Inc., a non-profit promoting women's health, social justice, and arts and humanities. On February 6, the non-profit is hosting their second annual benefit show, featuring performances from artists such Thelma and the Sleaze, Becca Mancari, and Kyshona Armstrong. Along with the performances, the show will feature a silent auction with nearly $4,000 worth of donations from the likes of Miranda Lambert, Hatch Show Print, and me! To contribute to the cause, I'm donating 50 signed prints of Zazu's piece. I'm happy to support this wonderful non-profit. "Ain't Afraid: A Benefit For Jessi Zazu, Inc." begins at 7pm at Basement East in Nashville, Tennessee on February 6. Tickets are $12. More information on Jessi Zazu, Inc. can be found on their website: https://www.jessizazu.org/. Follow them on social media @jessizazuinc. #aintafraid

It is my birthday and I have the flu—but that won't stop me from celebrating with a facebook fundraiser for LIDÈ Haiti! To make it extra special, @holidayreinhorn and I will match every donation that comes in today. [link in bio] LIDÈ now serves over 800 girls in 13 rural locations accross Haiti. Getting to these rural locations takes a toll on our three trucks, which are vital for getting our teachers and supplies (and students in the case of BSEIPH, our differently-abled program) to our program sites. Tires and vehicle maintenance are one of our biggest expenditures, and a current necessity, so all the money raised today will help ensure safe and reliable transportation for LIDE staff and participants.

The year was 2004. The movie SAHARA was shooting in Morocco. I had a scene where Rudi Gunn was escaping the bad guys by hiding in a truck filled with goats. What they didn’t tell me? When goats get scared, which is pretty much all the time, THEY PEE!!!! So every take the truck would start up and peel away from the border guards, the goats would start bleeting and peeing, bleeting and peeing. We did about 8 takes. By the end, I was awash in a sea of goat urine, which would slosh back and forth as the truck drove bathing me in a tsunami of petting zoo piss.

#Repost @lidehaiti ・・・ “Women of Haiti” by Junia Elisca (written at age 17) We, women of Haiti We need courage We need to use our spirits, so we can reclaim our lives We need to take more action We need this courage because they say women cannot lead What we need is the courage to say back to them, "no" women can lead. What we need are our spirits We need our spirits when they say to us, “Women cannot do what men do; they can’t drive a tractor.” We must find in our spirits the voice to say, “no, women can drive one too” Men have hands, women have hands too. Men can learn, women can learn too. Men have memories, Women have memories too. We must be strong when they are saying, “men are stronger.” Men go to school, the women also attend school, Men have knowledge We must grasp hold of the same knowledge. We must know our rights, Do not put it in your head that men have more value than we have.

#Repost @lidehaiti ・・・ Jwaye Nwel! This Christmas, we are thankful for the gifts of resiliency through creative writing. Through writing their inner hopes, dreams and feelings, our students promote their own well-being, flexible thinking and connection to something bigger than themselves. Writing offers a chance to access their unique purpose. This video of a creative writing session was captured by filmmaker and director Sally Bentley and cinematographer Quinn Benson at our Souvenance program site.

My first job as a professional actor (age 23) was being an ensemble member and understudy at the New York Shakespeare Festival‘s production of “12th Night” starring none other than this great man. I’ve run into him twice over the course of the last couple months. Once in Salt Lake City and now at London Heathrow. He is almost oppressively cool and stylish in a way that I will never be. Plus he just released a new jazz album!!! @JeffGoldblum

The British Museum should just be called the “Hey, We conquered the world and stole all the coolest shit” museum. But I did see a lot of battles between humans and Centaurs that were pretty cool. Who knew there were so many? It was probably like the marvel comics of the age.

Thank for your Twitter love. We are safe and sound (oversees), our animals were rescued and our house (barely) spared. The fire roared down the creek bed behind our house and missed it by a dozen yards! Thousands of others have lost homes and pets and precious belongings. Especially the residents of Paradise who have lost lives. Thanks to the AMAZINGLY brave scores of firefighters that saved hundreds of homes and lives. Send prayers AND support! #ParadiseStrong

On Election Day, no more fitting place to be than one of the most ancient, sacred spots on earth. Reminded of humanity’s various epochs and the forgotten chapters of our collective history. This current period of hate, fear-mongering, division and war will someday pass and our species will again seek to build things that are lasting, sacred, beautiful and in harmony with nature.
