Over the past quarter-century, Earth’s oceans have retained 60 percent more heat than scientists had originally foreseen. The world's oceans have absorbed more than 93% of the excess heat from greenhouse gas emissions, mainly from fossil fuels, leading to an increase in global ocean temperatures. The warming of the oceans leads to deoxygenation, and sea level rise resulting from the expanding seas as they heat up and increase the melting of sea ice. This will have multiple effects on marine life such as loss of breeding grounds for marine mammals, seabirds and fisheries. Millions of people rely on fisheries and aquaculture for a source of income and protein worldwide.
