@melissajoanhart : #Repost @lonelywhale ・・・ #EnvironmentalismNotAbleism ✊ In honor of the 28th anniversary of the passing of the #ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), we wanted to share this story: When #LonelyWhale launched #StopSucking we were not aware alternative straws weren't suitable for those with disabilities. However, we quickly realized that some need plastic straws to live fully so we reached out to those that had shared that info with us and started a conversation. 💭 (Artwork by @carladrawz for @lonelywhale) 🌊 Those conversations resulted in a few “straw tests” where we learned that paper, metal, & glass straws posed problems for those with disabilities. For that reason, we've championed appropriate straws, recognizing plastic straws as necessary on our website, resources & with partners. On launch of #StrawlessOcean, the umbrella initiative supported by #StopSucking and #StrawlessInSeattle, we shared that it’s critical to advocate for appropriate alternatives (read: NOT paper, metal, glass, bamboo) with industry partners and ensured that we relayed this to policymakers who reached out to our team. 🗳 Now, we’re working to connect those leading bans to engage with their local disability rights organizations. But @LonelyWhale is already looking #beyondthestraw, towards tackling other more impactful single-use plastic items and we want input! 📬 So if you’re interested in helping shape environmental campaigns to ensure they champion accessibility, please stay tuned for opportunities to get involved. In the meantime, we remain committed in advocating, to the best of our ability, for accessibility in our campaigns and also when contacted by local representatives seeking advice to ensure that any proposed policy protects accessibility.
