@katiecouric : Today’s #WednesdayWomen also happens to fall on #WorldMentalHealthDay so I wanted to highlight @elyse.fox, founder of the @sadgirlsclub. Sad Girls Club is an Instagram account that has grown into a community, both on and offline. Elyse started Sad Girls Club as a way to open up about her mental health struggles, and create a safe space for girls to be honest and find support. It has now evolved into a real-life community with over 53,000 members - and Elyse has organized over 20 meetups for free group therapy sessions. Elyse has struggled with depression since she was a child but did not receive her diagnosis until age 23. “Growing up, there was a lack of representation of what mental health looked like in general, but especially among women of color.” she says. “There was no advocates who were successful, proud-and also had depression, or anxiety, or PTSD openly. I didn’t have an outlet - I basically created Sad Girls Club for the 10 year old Elyse - it’s all the things I would have wanted to see when I was going through what I was going through.”❤️ I think it’s so important to remove the stigma of mental health issues and be more open about it. I was alarmed to learn that anxiety has surpassed depression as the most common mental health issue and more than one in four women between the ages of 16-24 experience mental health problems (such as generalized anxiety disorder, depression, phobias, and obsessive compulsive disorders) and are nearly three times more likely to suffer from these disorders than men in the same age range.
