@katiecouric : I know this is long, but....here goes! What an incredible treat to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of my amazing in-laws Herb and Paula Molner. They met in December of 1957 at an engagement brunch for mutual friends. Herby was immediately smitten and said Paula (a senior at @northwesternu where Herb had graduated a few years before) was clearly “a cut above.” Not to mention brilliant and beautiful! Paula found Herby “too friendly” and “a bit presumptuous” and as they say in modern day parlance was just not that into him. But he persisted and when she didn’t call him back, he showed up at her sorority house unannounced , took her to coffee and started to wear her down. On their first official date in January, over duck a l’orange at a French cafe on Lincoln Park West, they discussed what they would name their children, so I guess Herby was pretty convincing! Paula says she was attracted to his ease, spontaneity and joy. “He’s overstated, I’m understated,” she told me. (I’m getting a little verklempt writing this!) By March they were engaged and the following December they were married. I asked them the secret to a long and happy marriage, and they both said it was important to know how to be together and how to be independent. To appreciate what you share and what you don’t. As Herb told me: one plus one equals three. You, your partner and the things you love together. As I said in a poem I wrote for the occasion, “They found each other without losing themselves.” They are two of the most interesting people I know...both love art, travel, ideas and a remarkable collection of friends they’ve met along the way. As I said at the end of my little poem,”We do love John madly, fake news that is not, but with Herby and Paula we hit the jackpot!” Ellie, Carrie and I feel so lucky to know all the Molners, but especially these two extraordinary people who immediately made us feel not just comfortable, not just welcome, but truly loved. Congratulations you two crazy ki
