A video of Dick Arnold and Rob McBride, two men from Menindee, Australia, holding the carcasses of 100-year-old Murray cod that had died in the Darling River in New South Wales, has gone viral on Facebook, gaining more than 4.4 million views. Hundreds of thousands of fish, including the critically endangered Murray cod, were found dead along a stretch of the river this week. This is the second mass death of fish in the Darling River in two months. An estimated 10,000 fish died in December in an incident local officials said was due to the drought. Officials say the mass death this week was caused by a toxic algae bloom, however, Arnold, McBride and other residents say the environmental disaster was man-made and due to the government’s mismanagement of water flows into the system.
