@katiecouric : I was devastated to wake up to the news this morning that 49 people were killed in mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand on Friday. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said “This is one of New Zealand’s darkest days. What has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence - an act that has absolutely no place in New Zealand.” Violent crime in New Zealand is rare compared to the rest of the world - murders in the country fell to a 40 year low of 35 in 2017. This story is still developing but here is what we know so far: 🔹Officials said in an evening news conference that 41 people had been killed at Al Noor Mosque, and 7 at Linwood Mosque and that another victim had died at Christchurch Hospital. 🔹Four people - three men and one woman had been taken into custody, and that one of them was Australian. 🔹A man in his late 20s has been charged with murder and will appear in Christchurch court on Saturday morning. 🔹A 17-minute video was posted on @facebook and shows part of the attack. The clip which appears to have been taken from a helmet camera worn by a gunman shows a car driving through the street of Christchurch before pulling up in front of Al Noor Mosque. He approaches the mosque on four and begins shooting for two minutes at the worshipers inside. 🔹One of the gunmen left behind a 74 page manifesto that railed against Muslims and immigrants and cites other right wing extremists who have committed mass acts of violence. 🔹Before the shooting, someone appearing to be the gunman posted links to a white-nationalist manifesto on @twitter and 8chan - an online forum known for extremist right-wing discussions. In this video, the man identified himself as a 28-year-old Australian and he listed his white nationalist heroes. 🔹A Muslim leader in New Zealand said the attack was especially shocking as it took place around Friday Prayer. #news #christchurch #newzealand #heartbreaking #massshooting
