@katiecouric : The situation that is currently unfolding in #sudan is something that everyone should be aware of and talking about. Last Monday, paramilitaries began a violent backlash in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, shooting pro-democracy protestors, burning tents and sexually assaulting women. Doctors counted 118 deaths over several days, while the government reported only 61 deaths. As a reminder: ▪️In April 2019, former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, whose reign had lasted 30 years, was deposed in a military coup following civilian uprisings against his government (you may remember that viral video of a Sudanese woman standing on a car leading a protest against al-Bashir.) ▪️After al-Bashir’s downfall, protestors hoped for a swift transition to civilian rule, which was resisted by military generals. ▪️Last Monday, the Rapid Support Forces (a notorious paramilitary group in Sudan) led a crackdown and caused the government to cut internet access, leading to a media blackout. The RSF has an iron grip on the capital and the pro-democracy protestors, most of them young Sudanese and led by doctors and other professionals, have been forced to go underground due to the violence and the lack of accessibility caused by the media blackout.
