@katiecouric : 🚨The Customs and Border Protection agency’s acting commissioner, John Sanders, will step down early next month as the government’s primary border enforcement executive -which comes shortly after upsetting reports that revealed hundreds of minor detainees were held for weeks without access to showers, clean clothing, or sufficient food inside of a Border Control station in Clint, Texas. Today, it was disclosed that more than 100 children had been returned to that same station in Clint, Texas - even though no additional resources had been provided to the children who were sent back. During a court ordered visit to the facility earlier this month, lawyers from some of the nation’s top law schools and a board-certified physician said children told them that they had not been allowed to shower in nearly a month, and were so hungry that it had been hard for them to sleep through the night. “The conditions within which they are held could be compared to torture facilities,” said physician Dolly Lucio Sevier. The unaccompanied minors at the facility are subjected to “extreme cold temperatures, lights on 24 hours a day, no adequate access to medical care, basic sanitation, water, or adequate food.” These accounts prompted public backlash which led to almost 300 children who were housed at the Clint facility to be transferred elsewhere. Around 249 children were placed in a shelter network for children run by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement, while others were moved to a tent facility in El Paso run by Customs and Border Protection. Volunteers from around the country have mobilized, hoping to deliver supplies like diapers, soap, and food to the facility, but have not been allowed in and their donations were not accepted. I will post later ways you can help the children at the border, and if you know of any causes or organizations that can help, please write in the comments below.👇🏼This is not who we are. We can and must do better.💔#
