@clarencehouse : The London Declaration was signed 70 years ago today, marking the birth of the modern #Commonwealth. On 26 April 1949, during the reign of The Queen’s father George VI, Heads of Government came together and began a network of member countries sharing a set of principles and values. The Queen is Head of the Commonwealth and today it includes 53 countries and almost 2.4 billion people. The Prince of Wales has visited 45 Commonwealth countries, accompanied by The Duchess of Cornwall on many of these visits since their marriage in 2005. In March this year, Their Royal Highnesses celebrated ties with Commonwealth countries in the Caribbean, visiting St. Lucia, Barbados, St Vincent and The Grenadines, St Kitts and Nevis and Grenada during the tour. In 2018, it was announced that The Prince of Wales will succeed The Queen to become the next Head of the Commonwealth. The Prince said at the time: "I am deeply touched and honoured by the decision of Commonwealth Heads of State and Government that I should succeed The Queen, in due course, as Head of the Commonwealth.” “Meanwhile, I will continue to support Her Majesty in every possible way, in the service of our unique family of nations." 📸1: The Queen during a visit to Fiji in 1953 📸2: TRH in Sarawak, Malaysia, 2017 📸3, 4, 5, 6: TRH visit Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados during the Caribbean tour, 2019 📸 7: The Prince in Ghana, 2018 📸 8: TRH in Canada, 2017 📸 9: The Prince of Wales in Australia, 2015 © Press Association and Clarence House
