@sophiabush : I spent yesterday in the archival library at the New York Historical Society. Witnessing attacks on our Democracy — on the values that America is meant to stand for — can be an assault on one’s psyche. It wears me down to see such rampant corruption and cruelty in the highest offices in our land. So I walked the stacks. Went back in time. I touched papers published in 1790, with letters from George Washington inside. Thumbed through Frederick Douglass’ paper, The North Star, from 1848. Votes for Women song books from Suffragettes. I touched the fibers of our revolutions. • In 1790, Washington spoke of America as “the government of the United States, which gives bigotry no sanction.” He understood a larger truth than one he even acted on. He foretold what was meant to come, how we were meant to grow. Here’s to remembering that we were founded on perfect ideals, and that even when leaders have fallen short, committed citizens — the Douglasses of the nation, the women demanding parity — have held them to a higher standard. Liberty and Justice for ALL. Because it was Douglass who said it best. “Right is of no sex — Truth is of no color — And ALL we are brethren.” • It’s on us, y’all. Fight for the ideals that none of our current leaders seem to have read. Fight for this country to be the best version of itself. For all of us. Stand for goodness. For your neighbor.
