@sophiabush : Lori Alhadeff wrote a letter to her daughter Alyssa, who died one year ago, on 2/14/18, at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School. • Alyssa was 14. She was sad that she didn’t have a Valentine. She wore a black and white dress to school. Lori said “I love you,” & could not have known that it would be the last time she’d hear Alyssa say it back. • This should be required reading for everyone, including all members of Congress, in advance of tomorrow’s tragic anniversary. • We have a gun violence problem in America. A problem that robs families of their loved ones, robs children of their future chances to fall in first love, robs us of schools, movie theaters, churches, mosques, synagogues. Of barbershops and holiday parties. Offices. Home improvement stores. Town halls. Even our own homes. • I say all of this as a weapons-trained hobbyist and a gun owner. Know that before you accuse me of not understanding. I do. And because I do, I will continue to firmly state that we have a problem. We need a solution. And better regulations, a national database, universal background checks + universal waiting periods, and the removal of guns from those who commit domestic violence are ALL a start. If you are on a no-fly list, you shouldn’t be able to buy a gun. Gun laws shouldn’t be more lax than the laws that surround motor vehicles. These are facts. We all need to take a breath and figure out where our mythology around these issues comes from. Why we cling to outdated ideals. How we can do better, innovate, maintain versions of hobbies & lifestyles AND better protect our kids. Because let me tell you something, I’d miss my range days if I could never have them again. But if it meant the MSD 17, and the 1,100+ kids who’ve been killed by guns in this country SINCE the MDS shooting would still be alive? Whelp. I’d give them up. The REALITY is that no one is asking anyone to give up their hobby. Just to regulate it better. In the face of all these dead kids, we FIGHT that?? • It’s t
