Meet Toney Jackson and check out his Amazon wishlist in my bio: “I’m a fourth grade teacher from Hackensack, NJ! I love to rap in class, have fun, use puppets, and dance with my students. My students are agents of change, & I want to give them more opportunities for hands-on experiential learning, & voices that are diverse & inclusive. All of my students are non-white, yet most of our books don’t include  PoC characters or culturally relevant/enriching stories. Would love to inspire them & build up our library w/ amazing diverse authors & provide them opportunities to share their own voices by creating videos/podcasts/etc. Also, my colleague works full time, has at least 3 other jobs, runs her own dance company, has 3 sons in or going to college, stays late every night to work and prep & borrows a computer from the district. Our school Nellie K. Parker is named after the first African American teacher in Bergen County, NJ. We have an incredibly diverse staff serving an equally diverse student population. We are a Title 1 school district, with more than 60% of our students considered "Economically disadvantaged." Around 1/4 of our students are considered to have disabilities. The population is around 55% Hispanic, 25% Black, 10% Asian , and 9% White. I'm the only male classroom teacher, and often the only Black male classroom teacher my students have ever met (*we're 2% of the teachers in the US). Thank you so much!” Toney’s list has lots of books from diverse authors with diverse protagonists, several coding games/tools to bring STEAM to life, flexible seating options, materials for class video & audio recording/documenting, and a computer for his colleague in serious need.
