@mattmcgorry : #HappyMothersDay to my wonderful mudder* (*as I often call her)! # Through the last few years of my commitment to unlearning much of my socialization, I’ve become aware of how much I had distanced myself from identifying with the parts of my mother (and other women) that were deemed feminine. # Despite the fact that I never really recognized this for most of my life, I drew lines that would prevent me from being considered a momma’s boy, “a girl,” “gay,” or any other thing that society taught me that I should not be like if I wanted respect and to be “a real man.” Despite growing up in an extraordinarily progressive household, I still got these messages from my peers, the movies I watched, and every area of life. # I am thankful that I am on the lifelong path of re-educating myself out of these dangerous beliefs that lead to anger, shame, and the insatiable need for control, in exchange for becoming my fullest, best self. And I am grateful that this now allows me to more fully appreciate some of the qualities that I gained from my mother, that I was less likely to lean into previously...compassion, empathy, and sensitivity. # To be able to more fully learn from the wisdom of women and girls and be able to see my mother as hero (or shero) and to see other women as my leaders as well is a great gift. One that too many of us men (and particularly straight men) miss out on. I love you mom, and I’m grateful to be spending this mother day with you.
