@mattmcgorry : I heard that 75,000 people showed up today in LA for #FamiliesBelongTogether rally. As always, was honored to spend time with some bold and fierce activists that I admire greatly; @lavernecox , @labamby of @translatinacoalition , @docmellymel of @blmlosangeles , and @kendrick38 # Melina drew the important comparisons of family separations through inhumane immigration policies to that of what Black folks have experienced through the long legacy of slavery, mass incarceration, and police murder (not to mention what Black immigrants face in addition). And never afraid to tell the truth, she called out @mayorofla (who also spoke) for his liberal racism and two-faced speeches about “keeping families together” while people are detained just a few blocks away under his watch. My time spent with @blmlosangeles has taught me a lot about the continual oppression of People of Color that Garcetti is complicit in, from his lack of action to make LA a sanctuary city, to his continued silence about the $3.5 billion dollar expansion of new jails, and police murder. # This shit isn’t just about the president and the racist troll by the name of Jeff Sessions. It is also about #EricGarcetti. If we truly want families to stay together, then we must fight for this on ALL fronts, and be willing to hold so-called liberal politicians accountable as well. Tomorrow, I’m heading down to the border in San Diego to continue my fight. We cannot let up. Not now, not after this presidency, and not until Black and Brown lives matter.
