@mattmcgorry : “In The Country We Love: My Family Divided” by @dianexguerrero # Storytelling is an essential part of activism and creating change. It also requires a willingness to be vulnerable and open one’s self to criticism and the fear of harm that this openness can result in. I’m so proud of my friend, Diane, and her willingness to do this. Her story is one of inspiration and hope, and also of great difficulty. Learning about the hope with which her family arrived in this country, to the dehumanizing and vulnerable experiences of being undocumented in the U.S. really impacted me. To understand a bit more about this common and intense fear of living in the shadows is an important fact of understanding my friend better, and also of understanding myself, the country that I live in, and the privileges that are afforded to me by the sheer luck of being born a documented citizen. And Diane’s ability to impart this with honesty, humor, and an inspiring message, is just another thing I get appreciate her for.
