@mattmcgorry : "No One Is Illegal: Fighting Racism and State Violence on the U.S.-Mexico Border" by #JustinAkersChacón and #MikeDavis (this and other books currently 50% off at @haymarketbooks ) # This 357 page book is incredibly eye-opening, and provides a sweeping entry-point into understanding the current conversation about the U.S.-Mexico border that has deep roots in history and U.S. attempts to control labor, and thus capital. # As a person living in California, I found it very useful to learn about the long and brutal labor history in this state and how the legacy of racial and immigrant oppression has served to siphon money away from the poor and working class, into the hands of the elite. The close relationship of racist vigilantes, the KKK, the police (ever heard "Cops and Klan go hand-in-hand?"), and business owners that serve(d) to break up chances at solidarity of workers in order to organize for better wages and conditions continues to this day. And the particular vulnerability of the undocumented worker provides an easily exploitable upper-hand for those who want to drive the cost of labor downwards. With the threat and reality of deportation looming, it becomes very hard to form a united front. And as racism and nativism is stoked, it prevents (and always has) a true united working class that could more effectively work together to fundamentally restructure the economy of the United States. # Republicans AND Democrats have been guilty of dehumanizing policies that continue to exploit the labor of immigrants (and especially undocumented immigrants), destroying the lives of people being deported and those losing their lives crossing the border in more severe climates (which was intentional on the part of the US. govt). And so many of the people attempting to cross into the U.S. are doing so as a result of fucked up international U.S. policies that have widened inequality and brought unnecessary war abroad. Mostly in the name of money and power (aka capitalism
