@mattmcgorry : "Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood" by Carlos Andrés Gómez @carlosaglive # I really appreciate the depth of vulnerability and self-reflection in Carlos' book.  Both around his experiences as a man and specifically as a Latinx man. He grapples with his experiences being discriminated against based on his ethnicity while also understanding the privilege that he has due being light-skinned and at times, passing for being white. I found his experiences of being raised as a boy/man were similar to many of my own, as well as many of the men that I know.  When I first began to learn and speak about feminism a number of years ago, I only saw it as learning about the sexism that affected women (certainly not even considering non-binary people). I saw it as something that I was doing for *other people* simply because it was the right thing to do.  # It wasn’t until later that I realized the way that this same system of patriarchy has held me hostage as well.  The lives of men are often so constricted by these deeply entrenched forces of what it means to be "a real man," that most of us barely even notice the harm that it causes us.  It begins when we are children and is so ever-present that it becomes completely normalized before we are old enough to even consider it.  We are taught not to be vulnerable...so we are unable to process and understand our emotions and shame in ways that are so critical to us being healthy and happy human beings.  We are taught to dehumanize women in ways that prevent us from ever fully being in integrity. This is a deep soul-wound that is inflicted upon our hearts and souls. I now know that dismantling patriarchy is essential not only for the liberation of those that are oppressed based on their gender, but for cisgender men as well. We must break free of our allegiance to this oppressive system. #  My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgread (link in bio)
