Perhaps you are white and wondering what this meme means? I would say it applies to white people of all genders. Unfortunately, MLK's legacy (that has been severely altered by the white retelling of history) has made him out to be some apolitical figure, like Santa Claus. And too often, as white people, we use the limited understanding of his legacy to explicitly (or sometimes we just think it), tell Black people that they should be nicer to us while they are fighting their oppression. We assume that MLK would have done it differently, and wouldn't have been so "mean" to us. # And we might even think, "if Black people weren't so sensitive about race/racism, then maybe I would really be an ally!" Or, "If I was alive when MLK was around, I really would've supported HIM!" But the truth is, allyship can not depend on how easy a marginalized group makes it for you. If we REALLY and truly care about justice and equality, we will push forwards, continue learning and growing and trying to change the world so that racism and this huge wealth gaps doesn't exist. Saying, or thinking, that Black people not making us comfortable is our barrier towards trying to be better allies, is an excuse. It says that you value your comfort over equality. # And for the love of god, can we as white people, PLEASE share some different quotes on Monday than about how "love drives out hate"? There are some in this post. Google Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and "capitalism," "socialism," "white people," "the white moderate" and read his letter from Birmingham Jail. Sharing the same quote that most of us do every year (I've done it before too!) is just a way of remaining safe, comfortable, and apolitical as this man was hated and murdered precisely because he WAS radical and political.
