@mattmcgorry : From @sonyareneetaylor . I feel this deeply. Sometimes, people ask me why I am compelled to read so much about social justice. There are a number of reasons. One very important one is that my ability to be an agent of change will always be limited by how much education and understanding I have about the issues that we face as a society. # I spent 28 years of my life rarely doing any deep, intentional consideration of people’s perspectives outside of my own. About how my experiences and the lives of others are impacted by their race, gender, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, and other identities. Nor did I have any recognition of how this impacted my relationships with every person. # The knowledge that I have gained from political education has hugely impacted how I live my life and who I’ve become. It allows me to understand how change has happened in the past, and what must happen for us to create the future that all desperately need. # For me, unlearning oppressive ways of thinking and being is undoubtedly and act of self-care. Integrity matters to me. And without this knowledge that I use to inform my actions, I can never be in integrity. Without it, I can never live up to the values that I espouse because this world is constantly asking us to side with our privilege through “going with the flow.” # Morality and fairness have always been important qualities to me. It’s what drew me to philosophy when I was younger. But even when I studied philosophy in college, I never realized how they information that I was getting was so shaped by the fact that there was no analysis of how systems of oppression impact our “philosophies” and how each of us view the world. # If we can recognize that hate is a quality which destroys the lives of those that live with it, then we must acknowledge the cousin of hate...apathy. # We all have learning and unlearning that we must do to be in alignment with our values. What is the next area for you to become more educated abou
