@katiecouric : According to the @usdagov, more than 50 million Americans regularly don’t have enough to eat while up to 40% of the country’s food supply is wasted. Today’s #WednesdayWoman is working to change that. Maria Rose Belding developed @meansdatabase (while still in high school!) after spending years volunteering in her local food pantry and seeing food go to waste. MEANS is an online database that allows food pantries and kitchens to connect with businesses & corporations that have extra food in order to feed the hungry. MEANS has evolved into a nonprofit run largely by high school and college students that has helped redistribute more than 1.8 million pounds of food since 2015 and has served more than 69 million meals. MEANS has spread to 42 states (including the District of Columbia) in just two years and represents more than 3,000 partner agencies.
