@katiecouric : #TheBigStory: In a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court has reinstated President Trump’s ban against transgender individuals enlisting and serving in the military. This means the Pentagon can keep transgender people from enlisting and in some cases, can even kick them out while it works its way through the lower courts. Here’s a quick refresher: President Trump announced on Twitter in 2017 that the US would no longer “accept or allow” transgender Americans to serve in the military citing “tremendous medical costs and disruption.” Six months later, then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis implemented a memorandum that implies 1. If you’re a trans person you cannot enlist in the military 2. If you are already in the military and in the closet and come out as transgender, you will be discharged. 3. If you’re already an out transgender individual in the military, you won’t be discharged but trans advocates say the new guidelines could lead to harassment or discrimination. There are currently over 10,000 transgender individuals on active duty or in reserve forces that could be affected by this decision, which will likely make its way to the Supreme Court. “Today’s decision thrusts this administration’s discriminatory agenda onto a military that clearly doesn’t want it, and does so at the expense of transgender people’s careers and service.” according to the @humanrightscampaign in a statement earlier today.
