@katiecouric : It was such a pleasure to meet and interview Alice Marie Johnson, who really is a remarkable woman. If you don’t know Alice’s story, you need to. She was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for a first time, nonviolent drug offense. She never once lost hope, or gave up fighting for her freedom. Alice was an exemplary prisoner who became a minister, a hospice counselor, wrote and directed plays, led a dance group, and was always of service to her fellow inmates. After a video of Alice speaking in prison went viral, it caught the attention of @kimkardashian, who was so moved she decided she needed to help in any way she could. Kim’s activism on Alice’s behalf led President Trump to grant Alice clemency after serving 21 years in prison. Alice is now determined not to let her newfound freedom go to waste, and works tirelessly to inform and repair the US criminal justice system and help people just like her. Her new book, “After Life: My Journey from Incarceration to Freedom,” is out now and it’s an incredible read. Check out our interview on my IGTV and @youtube channel!
