@katiecouric : Severe weather has raged across communities from the Rocky Mountains to the Mid-Atlantic in recent weeks. Idaho, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, and Pennsylvania all saw massive twisters touch down over the past several days. Surrounding areas in Ohio and Kansas have been hit particularly hard. In the last week alone, authorities have linked tornadoes to at least seven deaths and scores of injuries. On Monday, 55 tornadoes may have touched down, and at least 27 tornadoes were reported on Tuesday. Federal government weather forecasters logged preliminary reports of more than 500 tornadoes in a 30 day period. This past Tuesday was the 12th consecutive day with at least 8 tornado reports, beating the record set in 1980 according to Dr. Patrick Marsh, the warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center. The storms have drawn their fuel from two sources - a high pressure area that pulled the Gulf of Mexico’s warm, moist air into the central United States, where it combined with the effects of a trough trapped over the Rockies, which included strong winds.
