“Eugene Arnold Krakower, New York, NY.
.
When I was about 7 or 8, Uncle Gene took my brother and I to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The streets were packed and freezing, but my Uncle had been a union electrician for the City of New York like his father and knew the construction sites on the parade route.
.
Uncle Gene hoisted us up on a definitely-not-child-safe scaffolding where we watched Mighty Mouse and Kermit in full vibrancy and spectacle three stories about all the regular people crammed in at street level who didn’t have a magical uncle.
.
Uncle Gene was a rascal- wickedly funny and full of playful disobedience. He was so different than my parents’ “normal” pale friends with their Camrys and swimming pools and stiff children with whom I was meant to play.
.
He was equal parts kid and grown-up, and had boats, and explosives, and a menagerie of wild pets including a bobcat who once famously bit my father on the ass. Uncle Gene thought it was hysterical.
.
Uncle Gene was so fully his own thing and he gave zero fucks, even though he died in 1990, thirty years before basic people would coin the expression.
.
He made all the other populace of my world feel so flat. Uncle Gene was always vertical, three stories tall, ecstatically alive with color and mischief.” — by @pokeacupuncture
