In the year since the Chinese ban was implemented, millions of tons of plastics and other recyclables have piled at export facilities, been sent to incinerators, or ended up in landfills. In England, more than half-a-million more tons of plastics and other household trash were burned last year, while communities across the U.S. curtailed collections or halted their recycling programs entirely.
