@katiecouric : Today's edition of #thegoodguys comes from one of my followers (and fellow UVA grad!) Olivia Calzada, who wrote to me and nominated her father, Antonio. It’s such a love letter to her Dad and I am so happy to shine a light on this wonderful man. It also gives me an opportunity to celebrate ALL the parents out there who take such wonderful care of children with special needs. You are my heroes. ♥️ “My brother Antonio is 30 years old and has Cerebral Palsy. He had an acute hypoxic brain injury at birth which caused his disability. Since his birth, my father (also named Antonio) has dedicated his entire life to being the best possible father, caregiver, husband, and human being imaginable. My family and I grew up in Querétaro, México, where at the time there were essentially zero services available to kids and people with disabilities. In general, people with disabilities were, and continue to be, significantly stigmatized in Mexico (and many other foreign countries), but both of my parents always set an amazing example of equality, inclusivity, and love. My parents bargained for years with the local schools to allow my brother to attend, and eventually secured him an education. We moved to the Northern Virginia area in 2002 seeking better schooling, healthcare, and services, and have resided here ever since. Throughout my brother's lifetime, my father has had to make innumerable sacrifices and difficult decisions to prioritize his well-being. Aside from that, he has always set an example for the both of us to aim at the sun in every aspect of our lives-- personally I recently graduated with my Master's Degree in Nursing and became a Double Hoo, all of which I owe to both of my parents.
