And in the Sierras, and the Rockies... and across the American West and around the world. The frequency and intensity of forest fires is spiking. • I recently read that Sweden experienced the worst forest fires in recorded history this summer, requiring fire fighting personnel and equipment to be flown in from across the EU in a moment of national crisis. How does an entire country suddenly get caught off guard by an annual natural phenomenon like forest fires? Well, it’s because climate change is accelerating. It’s been the hottest month on record for many countries around the world, and the hottest month in Sweden in 262 years. • Tragically, the consequences of climate change are only beginning to bear fruit. We are experiencing the early stages of planetary changes that will amplify for over a hundred years, even if civilization magically reached peak emissions tmr. • I personally ebb and flow from feeling desperate and helpless in face of such a daunting global issue, to feeling energized to “be the change you want to see in the world” as Ghandi once famously said. I’m eating less meat, and may even go full vegetarian here soon enough. I’m flying substantially less. I’m buying local produce, and repairing my clothes and possessions myself to make them last as long as possible. And I’m completely off the grid, powering my minimal electricity needs with @goalzero solar products. My own actions are too tiny to make an impact, but maybe, just maybe, demonstrating a fulfilling low carbon lifestyle can help to inspire others.
