@jamieoliver : 21 years today since Michael Hutchence passed away, this amazing photo and words by @harryborden in 11/3/1997 This image was taken during a frenzied week in Paris. The schedule was gruelling. French pop shows, Arts programs and interviews for the world's media. I never tired of seeing him perform the single they were promoting. He was a like a puma prowling the stage and his voice was goose-bump inducing. In the evening we found ourselves surrounded by beautiful women and it was interesting to observe the desire in their eyes for Michael. Not many man experience being objectified so brazenly. He couldn't have been less interested. Both of us new Fathers, we enthusiastically showed each other pictures of our daughters who were both born the year before. He was reluctant to be the charismatic focal point, (insisting they were a band) but kindly agreed to a formal session against a black back-drop. Then later, I was on the hotel balcony, trying to keep out of the way whilst he was doing a television interview in his room and he came out to have a cigarette. I had my camera with me and he just posed for me briefly, without either of us actually acknowledging what he was doing. As he looked past me, into the distance, his mind seemed to be somewhere else. It was a genuine moment. I was surprisingly upset by his death. He was a gentle beautiful man and it was a privilege to spend a few days with him. The picture on the balcony was never printed at the time. After it was exhibited at the John Kobal Portrait competition, it developed a life of it's own. The Australian National Portrait Gallery got in touch and images were used on a posthumous album of material he'd been working on. The single they were promoting was Elegantly Wasted. Shot on a Fuji 6x7 Rangefinder on Tri-X Film. There will be an extended piece about this picture in Amateur Photographer for my 'When Harry Met' series. #MichaelHutchence #inxs #Observer #Paris #backthroughthearchive #negatives #Kodac #
