Thanks to @jimmyfallon and the entire @fallontonight crew for hosting us yesterday (right before they shut down production). I was today years old when I finally visited my dad at work. He’s been a captain at @americanair since before I was born (he just celebrated his 40 year anniversary at the company- go dad!) and today was my first time ever flying with him! Also my stepmom (an AA flight attendant) was working our flight as well so I got some face time with both them on their breaks (and took the requisite cockpit shots before we left London). Also, the landing was 👍🏼, dad. BEST TRIP HOME EVER. #captaindon #prouddaughter

There’s no way to distill this experience down to a few sentences. There’s no way to encapsulate what coursed through our veins and brains living in the mountains this past week. It will come in time. I think I’m slowly learning that I feel most like me when I’m outdoors. It’s couldn’t be any more outside my every day realm and yet there’s something entirely refreshing about being tasked with nothing more than breathing and slowly putting one foot in front of the other. One thing I know for certain is that this trip was what it was thanks in large part to the company. Being able to adventure alongside those you love deeply (@streicherhair, @chaseweideman, @thejendaltonshow) and new friends alike (@starfire_reid, @julianapse, @tyler__reid, @sherpatseringdolker), is an absolute gamechanger. We shared everything: laughs, toilet paper, snacks, skincare, the silly songs that got stuck in our heads, milk tea, selfies, the “happy naturals”, etc.... all the makings of a quality trip to the most remarkable place any of us have ever been. I’m also left inspired by the collective perseverance this group had to help each other every step of the way and to watch as we all met this shared goal of reaching base camp together is something I’ll never forget. Thank you to our friends at @eddiebauer for making this happen! And to the true MVP of this trek, @melissaarnot: thank you for sharing such a substantial piece of yourself and this second home of yours with us. It’s every bit as magical as you described: Your expertise, your stories, your wisdom, your belief in us.... set the tone for this entire experience.... The funny thing is, Melissa kept mentioning this idea of meditating and making goals while we were in the midst of the “pain cave”. It’s easy to daydream and make big plans when you’re down at sea level but it’s a much taller order to do it while in the grips of something truly difficult. Message received. There is so much magic in these mountains. They represent adventure in the grandest form and in a language all their own. The idea of standing at the base of the world's tallest peak with @eddiebauer, a brand that has been outfitting record-setting climbers since the beginning - from the first American ascent in 1963 (Jim Whittaker) to our guide @melissaarnot, the first American Woman to ascend and descend Everest without oxygen, is truly beyond my wildest imagination. Traversing this terrain has its challenges. Breathing at altitude, for instance, is not easy. One of the greatest gifts/lessons that Melissa simultaneously bestowed on us during this trek was the fine art of pressure breathing. It makes all the difference as you climb higher. It’s essentially a big inhale and a sharp, forceful exhale, like you’re blowing out a candle across the room, to open up your lungs, allowing you to use more oxygen, etc... Besides hydration and staying nourished, breathing is THE vital key in the fight against altitude sickness. It’s also a major takeaway that I will be employing back to the real world whether I’m in the midst of a tough workout or a weird day. Mind blown. So as we weaved around the Himalayas from 14,400ft-16,200ft-17,600ft: this particular technique was essential in propelling us forward. Needless to say, this part of the world holds a very special place in @melissaarnot’s heart so her willingness to share it, as well as her time, knowledge and endless trove of stories were so appreciated by all of us lucky enough to walk alongside her this past week. Her belief in our abilities to keep moving and ultimately make it to the base of the Mighty, Mighty Mt. Everest was so powerful. Spoiler alert: we made it!!! It’s impossible to be lucky enough to arrive at the foot of these mammoth peaks and not be attuned to the palpable energy of all of those who came before and lost their lives in these mountains. One of the reasons I’m passionate about working with @eddiebauer is due to the authenticity of their programs - they've been supporting @thejuniperfund since its inception, understanding that we must support the mountain communities that support us. Founded by two @eddiebauer guides (Melissa Arnot & David Morton), the Juniper Fund provides financial support, vocational training and small business grants to the families of local workers who are killed working in the Himalayas. Not to take away from our journey but I felt compelled to explain the difference between our trekking trip to Everest Base Camp vs the experienced and professional mountaineers and alpinists who are CLIMBING Everest. If all goes well, we will have completed what is only 1/6 of the entire trip for someone who actually climbs (8 weeks total). We stand in awe of the fortitude and training and superhuman strength it takes to attempt a feat like Everest and are deeply honored just to be here and feel the Khumbu vibes. #whyihike #everestviewtrek

I went into this Everest viewing trek relatively blind. Not unprepared, mind you...but I wanted to venture forward into the unknown with an open mind and heart and as free of expectations as possible. I also knew we were in extraordinary hands with our friend/ @eddiebauer alpine guide and Everest extraordinaire @melissaarnot (she’s summited 6 times and guided the Basecamp trek between 35-40 times so this isn’t her first rodeo). Once we arrived in Kathmandu and had our de-brief about what the next 10 days of our life we’re going to look like, it became abundantly clear that this experience was going to be one of physical discomfort, personal challenge AND fundamental spiritual growth. Sign me up. We also decided as a group to refer to our trip as a Everest viewing trek incase our plans deviated from the original goal of making it to base camp, placing greater importance on the journey and not the destination. In addition to living out this bucket list dream, being gently placed in this middle of this extraordinary country of Nepal and bearing witness to the customs and culture of the Sherpa people has been spellbinding. So much to take in, in every way. 3 days in, I’m writing this from 11,500 feet, tucked away in the terraced village of Namche (also known as the Sherpa center of the Khumbu Valley) as transparent clouds of mist seem to obscure our view of the hustle and bustle below and then just as quickly, glide away to reveal the towering peaks of Kongde Ri and Kwande La. We’ve been acclimatizing here for the past 2 days, taking on some day treks to help prepare our bodies and breath for the travels ahead. Not sure what awaits us on the road today but this group is in it all together (with all the snacks and milk tea one could ever want)! Stay tuned.... #whyihike #ebpartner

While we only scratched the surface and saw a tiny sliver of this unimaginably breathtaking country, I can emphatically say that we were blown away and are already planning our next trip to New Zealand. Our excursion was two-fold: equal parts relaxation and adventure. It was also meant as a pre-cursor, warm up of sorts for our trek to Everest Base Camp in a few weeks. I didn’t exactly arrive with any set expectations but I sure did come away surprised at the breadth of the trip. My biggest takeaway? Lean into the discomfort. It’s temporary and an essential ingredient to growth. Not everything has to be a thrill-a-minute. It’s all a part of it! We forded rivers. We slipped and fell in bottomless holes of mud. We camped on a freezing riverbed with sand flies biting the crap out of us. We also laughed more than ever, came up with a million inside jokes, took nature pees at every possible moment, sang songs, rafted down a river, summited an alpine peak, climbed many, many miles- including free range trekking down 3k feet...and so much more! There’s nothing quite like the bond that strengthens when traveling with friends. Seeing them surprised at their own perseverance and capabilities is a total joy. @melissaarnot and I met early last winter and I happen to think it was love or atleast unbridled admiration at first sight. And this was before I even knew what she really did, mind you. Yes, she of 6 Everest summits (the only American woman to do it without supplemental oxygen) and too many other climbs, treks and accolades to name. She’s also an @eddiebauer alpine guide, a trained paramedic & Co-founder of The Juniper Fund, a non-profit that provides financial support, vocational training and business grants to the families of Sherpa workers killed on Everest and surrounding mountains. Plus she’s a wife, a new mama and a mentor to many folks who look to her for steady guidance tackling climbs and meeting their goals all over the globe. In other words she is the personification of a bad-ass and I immediately confided in her my deep desire to travel and climb mountains together. Cut to our trip to NZ and we finally found ourselves side by side trekking through ice, snow, lush forest canopies and soggy/ seemingly bottomless holes of mud and slippery, moss covered rocks. On this particular day, we descended 3k feet, not on any sort of trail, just down the mountain side... and I kept slipping on the combo of steep terrain and the aforementioned muck. Gradually I felt myself start to tense up and become hesitant with each step, as I was terrified to twist an ankle or plunge down the mountain face first. Full disclosure: I am a perfectionist. I am not good at not being good at something. I started to beat myself up for what I perceived as slowing down the group because it seemed me that no one else was having any difficulty. That became my narrative for a little while and I was pretty bummed at myself. Having her by my side to recognize and remind me that this was ALL new territory, that I had never done anything like this before so why would I automatically assume I’d be great it? The idea that I needed to be way kinder to myself seeeeeeems like a no-brainer piece of a

There a plethora of reasons #whyihike. It gives me grounding, connection, recalibration. There are oh so many metaphors for the challenges and discomfort that one may face on the trail that can be applied to life in a general sense. It can also be a time of quiet reflection, a time to drink in every frame of new terrain, to stand in wonder at the sheer beauty and magnitude of this planet.... it’s truly endless. This trip signifies all of that and more: it’s an opportunity to take a break from the chaos of the daily grind, travel to the other side of the world with some of my closest friends and to gently push ourselves out of our comfort zone. Day 1 was a soft landing: a leisurely hike through the verdant foothills of Mount Aspiring National Park. Day 2 of our trip to Wanaka meant a rafting excursion down the west branch of the Matukituki river before a helicopter trip up to the Alpine slopes surrounding us and a summit of Black Peak. Epic! Being in this magnificent country for the past week has consistently taken our collective breath away- I can’t wait for what awaits us next. Stay tuned!!! #whyihike #liveyouradventure

Thank you to Dr Strom and the entire staff at #metropolitananimalspecialtyhospital for saving this gentleman’s life. Somehow he decided to shred and eat a tennis ball without us knowing so we ended up at their door at 3:30 am for Jackson to have emergency surgery. What these doctors, nurses and caregivers do all day, EVERY day will never cease to amaze me. So much gratitude.

This weekend was a roller coaster of emotions in every way. Sometimes life doesn’t consider that you have big plans underway. Sometimes the earth just falls right out beneath you. We lost our sweet Madeline very suddenly on Saturday evening and my heart is so utterly broken. She had an enlarged heart (it had to be true because there wasn’t a sweeter, more affectionate cat in all the land), blood clots formed and sent her into heart failure. Completely out of the blue. We’re still in shock and processing the pain and grief of this loss but holding her in my arms, making sure she knew she was safe and loved as she took her last breaths will stay with me for the rest of my life. This poor cat would suffer through allergy shots every other day and not blink as we tried to get pills down her throat and then hop up in our laps and purr louder than a car engine. She never held it against us... like she knew we were trying to help her feel better. Animals really are the ultimate teachers. Thank you for the lessons in patience, responsibility and unconditional love, Madeline. Love you, baby girl. Also, #adopdontshop #rescuesarethebest 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔

Slowly coming to an end with the remodel pics.... She’s a tiny but delightful powder bathroom (with a tiny hidden shower to boot) in the front of our house. I’m grateful to @emilyfarnhamarchitecture, @sarahshermansamuel and @wayfair for helping transform it from dark and ordinary to full of life and on theme with the rest of the house. I’m also grateful to Taylor for being so game and allowing us to put this gorgeous deep purple Viola Calcutta marble in the bathroom right by his office (aka the one he uses most). But that slab, along with the @fireclaytile chevron tile, the custom built-in cabinet and the gorgeous @lumensdotcom light fixtures all work to elevate this space for our guests. House post! Soooo....The outdoor scope was a fairly large undertaking all on it’s own (we’re actually starting phase 2 of some more landscape architecture, planting and redesigning the driveway, etc... here shortly). We had a whole separate team designated specifically for all of this work (@terremoto_landscape and @johnstonvidalprojects). To borrow from @emilyfarnhamarchitecture— “Progressive landscape architects Terremoto brought rigor and drama to the exterior environment. They gave the property the well-composed entry sequence it deserves, and an inspired view from every vantage point thereafter. I worked closely with them to capitalize on all possible indoor-outdoor connections. They added amenities to the site including an entry court fountain, a fire pit, and beautifully detailed outdoor benches.” I think my favorite part of the outdoor scope was the restoration of the terraced eaves that were an original design detail that had been stucco-ed over at some point over the years. Sadly the originals woodwork was not hidden underneath and the the eaves had to be painstakingly recreated (thanks to the @bronstruction team).

We demoed the existing pergola (which sat far too close to the house for our taste and comfort) and rebuilt one with a more minimal approach that kept with the raw aesthetic of the yard. Soooo we have yet to eat an actual meal in our dining room BUT I think we’re just waiting to host a dinner party or Thanksgiving or something (we’ve hosted friends outside a few times because it’s summer and why not enjoy the weather). However, I’m still excited about the airy elegance that @sarahshermansamuel brought to this room: the color palette, the funky chandelier, the @allmodern burl table of my dreams, the oversized artwork by @loumora and sculptural vases, etc.... They all work together to highlight the original brickwork and planters from 1950 (when the house was built) and the copper fireplace hood. I can’t vouch for my cooking but atleast we’ll have a nice setting for future holidays, right?? There’s no greater treat than the gift of organization. Our home is from 1950= we have limited storage space, hence the massive clean sweep/donation station I did with the stuff I had been holding on to for far too long before we moved. Next up on the house tour is our kitchen. @sarahshermansamuel, @emilyfarnhamarchitecture and I worked hard to take away the terrible 80’s curved breakfast nook (the same thing we did in the master bath), while keeping the square footage it gave us. I knew I wanted the kitchen to be open and light, complete with open shelving and plenty of prep space and room to hang/chat around the island. Plus there’s a great view out the back sliding door that we wanted to take full advantage of. It’s the room that we end up spending the most time in and I couldn’t be more thrilled with how it came together. Peep the before and after photos here and on @sarahshermansamuel’s blog. A decade ago, my friend @inara_george introduced me to her dear friend @themikeviola and it completely flipped my world upside down. We immediately bonded over our shared love of “Ram” and Joni and Todd Rundgren and proceeded to spend a few months writing and recording a record together. I also devoured his entire catalogue and because an instant forever fan of everything he was a part of. Today he released what I think is easily his best/ most important record yet. Thanks MV, for continuing to inspire us and set the bar so high. Now friends- go find it on Apple Music and let it wash over you. I promise you won’t be sorry.

Why yes I did play Dainty June (at age 11?!?!) in a community theatre production of “Gypsy”. My big take away from these pics is that I take my posing VERY seriously. I’m not sure there’s a way to top our girls weekend at @ventanabigsur (one of my most favorite places ever) but we’ve decided to aim for it to become an annual tradition. The walk in the redwoods, the poolside chats, the endless laughs, the food, the wine.....We lived our best lives and I’m left blown away by my friends and our good fortune to be able to share these moments together.
