@lisa_wilkinson : This week I finally saw first hand some of the bushfire ravaged #southcoast of New South Wales and to be honest, it’s hard to put into words what I saw. It was also hard to hold back tears, especially after hearing the heartbreaking stories of some of those hardest hit, and the countless acts of beautiful kindness and breathtaking bravery that will probably never make the headlines. But the locals know them. This pic I took of a row of #letterboxes in one of the streets where half the houses were lost, probably says it best. Still standing, burnt at their base, leaning on each other, but holding each other up. Stronger for being together. Not going away. Because life has to go on. The backdrop in this pic also tells some of the story. So much is burnt to a blackened crisp, but after delivering it’s angry worst, the changing climate has also gifted drenching rains, and the landscape is now fluffy with neon green shoots. It brings hope, but it’s also strangely confusing. Andrew Constance, the local MP is one of those deeply affected by these fires. He knew well some of those who died. Nine hundred homes were lost in his electorate, another 400 are damaged and unliveable. Including his next door neighbour Steve’s. Steve is a volunteer fire fighter himself, and the night his went up, he was out saving the homes of others. That’s what’s left of Steve’s house in these pics. Yes, Andrew Constance is a politician, but he’s thrown away his “talking points”, he’s over the climate BS and leaders who don’t get it, he worries about the mental health ramifications, he’s concerned for all the business owners...and tonight we sit down for the Sunday @theprojecttv for an incredibly raw and honest interview with his wife Jen in the home he only just managed to save on that dreadful, dreadful night. 6.30pm on @channel10au And don’t forget you can help these badly affected areas by spending, visiting and shoping with them! *Go to @spendwiththem for the NSW south coast *@em
