@marthastewart : In our December issue, Editorial Food Director @sarahcarey1 shares one of her favorite childhood meals: her grandma's sweet-and-sour brisket. ✨ Here’s the story behind the recipe she and her brother re-created from memory, one bite at a time. 🍴 "When I was a child I used to visit my grandmother in Worcester in the house where my father grew up. 🏡 Often when we would visit, she would serve us sweet and sour brisket. Let me preface this by saying that my grandmother was not a good cook. My father jokes about how he thought steak was basically shoe leather until he met my mother, so it's surprising that anything edible came out of her kitchen. That being said, my brother and I loved the sweet and sour brisket. ❤️ We never got the recipe from my grandma, but after many discussions, my brother and I boiled it down to this 👉🏼 Sweet: ketchup, onions, and sugar. Tang: vinegar and ketchup. 🍅 Basic vegetables: potatoes and carrots and nothing else. 🥔🥕 A little sauté to build the sweetness of the onions and a long slow bake in the oven. And I’m pretty happy with the results.
