@katiecouric : Today I want to salute and celebrate the extraordinary #Arethafranklin who is in hospice as I write this. What a remarkable woman and a remarkable life. As @barackobama said in David Remnick’s wonderful @newyorkermag profile from March of 2016, “American history wells up when Aretha sings. That’s why, when she sits down at the piano and plays ‘A Natural Woman’ she can move me to tears...because it captures the fullness of the American experience, the view from the bottom as well as the top, the good and the bad, and the possibility of synthesis, reconciliation and transcendence.” He was in fact moved to tears watching this performance at the KENNEDY Center Honors in 2016. I love watching honoree @carole_king kvelling over Miss Franklin’s performance. (That’s what everyone calls her by the way) Carol and her then husband Gerry Goffin wrote the song in 1967. “Seeing her sit down to play the piano put me rungs higher on the levels of joy.” Thank you, Aretha, the Queen of Soul and the Queen of our hearts.
