@katiecouric : #OnThisDay in 1978, Harvey Milk became the first openly gay elected official in the US after he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Harvey Milk made significant strides while serving on the Board of Supervisors for gay rights and equality - during a time when there was a lot of homophobic rhetoric and discrimination against the gay community. Sadly, on November 27th, 1978, just 11 months after he was elected, Milk was assassinated by a former colleague, Dan White. Harvey Milk is remembered for his positivity, nonviolent approach to change and his significant accomplishments for the gay community. #harveymilk #gayrights #gayhistory #onthisday #history #tuesday
