@katiecouric : As most of you know, there is a #polarvortex sweeping through parts of the US Midwest and East Coast this week - subjecting nearly 220 million Americans to dangerously cold weather. There have already been five deaths linked to the extreme conditions this week. Authorities are urging people to bundle up, stay inside, and check in on the elderly. The polar vortex is bringing “the coldest air in a generation” and throughout the Midwest, strong winds will bring the wind chills to life threatening levels (they could hit minus 50°F in #northdakota #southdakota #illinois #wisconsin #michigan #iowa and #minnesota) Temperatures this cold could cause instant frostbite on exposed skin in regions where temperatures are plunging below zero. 🥶 Obviously, the most immediate at risk are the homeless in these areas. Here are some ways you can help: 🔹Call 311 or 911 if you see someone on the street. 311 will give you info about which local warming centers or shelters you can direct people too. buses, libraries, and churches. 🔹Donate public transportation cards, outerwear, or cash to homeless shelters. You can also call your local shelter to see what their needs are. 🔹In Chicago, @lyft is offering free rides to anyone trying to get to a warming center through Friday night.
