@katiecouric : Today’s #WednesdayWoman is working to change the paucity of women of color in tech. While studying computer engineering in college, Kimberly Bryant was one of the only black women in her classes. Decades later, she found it troubling that her daughter’s computer science classrooms looked just like her’s did years ago - almost exclusively male and white. So in 2011, Kimberly founded @blackgirlscode, a nonprofit organization that provides young girls from underrepresented communities an opportunity to learn the basic skills for computer programming, robotics, and app development through volunteer-run workshops. “I want them to understand that they have the right, the power to create the life they want for themselves.” Kimberly’s ultimate goal is to provide African American youth with the skills to occupy some of the 1.4 million computing job openings expected to be available in the US by 2020 and to train one million girls by 2040. @blackgirlscode has established 7 institutes and has operated in 7 states in the US as well as Johannesburg, South Africa. They have reached over 3,000 students and plan to expand in 8 more cities across the US. Thank you Kimberly, for the work that you’re doing and for your dedication to future generations.
