@katiecouric : Some days you spend time with people who restore your faith in humanity. Today was such a day. I have so much respect and admiration for these two men. @nickkristof has spent his career helping us understand so many important issues about the world, from criminal justice reform to human rights abuses, including child marriage here in the US (and now laws are changing) often focusing on places that get very little attention, like Yemen. He’s written four books and has won two Pulitzer prizes for his important work. He’s now writing a book about his hometown of Yamhill, Oregon and the impact of a changing economy on the kids he grew up with. (Sorry to end with a preposition but with whom sounds so formal on Instagram!) Meanwhile @iamwesmoore is the CEO of @robinhoodnyc the largest anti poverty non-profit in NYC. Wes has a remarkable story-growing up in Baltimore, he witnessed his father’s death when he was four and his mom sent him to live with his grandparents in the Bronx, NY. After struggling academically, he was sent to military school where he crushed it, went to @johnshopkinsu and like me, became a Rhodes scholar. (OK I was kidding about the like me part). Oh and did I mention he was a paratrooper with the 82nd airborne and served in Afghanistan and was awarded the combat action badge? These two are shining a light on poverty and coming up with creative solutions for lifting people out of it. I am so proud of them and privileged to know them.
