So much history and stories told through beautiful art.🎨⁣ ⁣ Regram- @metmuseum: Excited to share @sterlingkbrown's #MetCameo...just after #TheMet made its own cameo on @nbcthisisus last night!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Brown shared his appreciation for "Untitled (Cracked Watermelon)" from the 1890s:⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ "What I love about this painting by Charles Ethan Porter is that he fully recognized the negative stereotype associated with people of African descent and watermelons. Right? He chose to paint something quite beautiful and sort of own that stereotype. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ And by owning it, sort of flipped it. 'Are you going to say that we're associated with watermelon? Well, I'm going to paint you the most beautiful watermelon that you've ever seen. And by doing so, it has no power over me.' The stereotype loses its efficacy.
