@sophiabush : Salaam Alaikum means “peace be unto you,” and is the standard greeting of the Muslim faith. Salaam means peace. In Islam, Friday is jumu’ah, the day of prayer. And last Friday, a man was greeted at the door of the ChristChurch mosque in New Zealand by Daoud Nabi, who said “come in brother.” That man opened fire on the congregation and killed 50 people. #50Lives. It has taken me a week to crawl out from under the anvil on my chest and write about this. • I have been privileged enough to visit mosques over the years, and pray with some of my closest friends. I am always struck in the deepest part of my heart by the greeting, “welcome, sister,” or “come in, sister.” I have always been made to feel at home. Faith is supposed to do that. To welcome all. To encourage kindness, and empathy, and service, and love. The demonization of our brothers and sisters, the faithful of Islam, is a sin. Period. Islamic extremism is no more “Muslim” than any white nationalist is “a Christian.” EVERY religion teaches compassion. The Koran teaches that anyone who kills one person kills all of humanity. Let that sink in. ALL OF HUMANITY. So let us stop. Stop tolerating whatever the far right is doing. Stop doing “profile pieces” on Nazis and fascists. Stop saying “it’s just a small group of people” (POTUS, I’m looking at you). White nationalism is terrorism. Period. Let us condemn it as such. We should have learned this, as a people, by now. Let us do better. Let us all learn from Jacinda Ardern. She is the leader the world needs and deserves. She is our North Star now. Let us learn from the Maori, and stand in solidarity with our communities, quite literally arm in arm at their doors when they are most vulnerable. • Sufism is called the heart of Islam, and is truly the heart of all faith: peace, compassion, and oneness.
