And one more, for my actual twin in t-shirt taste, not in hair color, but in the kind of brain that sits underneath it, @laurabrown99. That means a wicked filthy sense of humor, a penchant for loud laughter, and the deep appreciation of a very, very cold tequila concoction that shall remain our secret for now. But hey, make us laugh and we may let you in on it 😎 Laura, you’re a gem. A legend. And @instylemagazine is so lucky to have you. You’re the baddest ass badass of them all #InStyleBadassWomen #InStyle25

[part 1] On Saturday I had the honor of speaking at @everytown @momsdemand @studentsdemand #GunSenseForum in Des Moines, #Iowa. I spoke as a concerned citizen, a gun owner, a hobbyist, and a woman whose family has been affected by a mass shooting. Make no mistake, I understand the issue from all sides. And the issue? This is a public health crisis. People are dying in the streets because our leaders are too cowardly to act. America has 122 guns for every 100 people. No other nation on Earth comes close. Next in line, at 40?? Yemen. A war zone. The issue is not mental health. The issue is easy access to guns. Period. All of the data proves this, and we’d have even more if our government wasn’t REFUSING to allow the CDC to study gun violence. That should be a clue. They want to deny us overwhelming information because it’s a bad truth for them the lobbyists who control them. Foreign countries are issuing warnings, urging their citizens not to travel here because it’s become too dangerous. Walmart is taking imagery of guns off the shelves, and video games that are played by the rest of the world to no increase in shootings anywhere else, but they won’t stop selling guns. They had the nerve to place a sign over a glass case filled with rifles that reads “OWN THE SCHOOL YEAR LIKE A HERO.” What the fuck does that even mean? It would be laughable if it weren’t so damn sad. A Fox News poll released today shows: - 90% of Americans support requiring criminal background checks on ALL gun buyers - 81% support passing "red flag" laws that allow police to take guns from people shown to be a danger to themselves or others - 67% banning assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons Imagine how high the numbers go among a bi-partisan audience! A measure that would handle these issues has already passed the house, and is stalled because of #MoscowMitch McConnell. We all need to pressure him and other Senators to reconvene the Senate immediately and vote on these gun-control measure

[part 2] I also had the honor of listening to — and spending one on one time with — virtually all of the Democratic candidates at the #GunSenseForum. They all made brilliant points. From @kamalaharris pointing out that Trump — who has been cited as a motivation for violent crime BY violent criminals 36 times in 2.5 years (for the record, both Bush and Obama were cited ZERO times in domestic terrorism attacks) and has been cited more times in attacks on our homeland in the last three years than any other person or organization on earth — may not have pulled the trigger but “he’s certainly been tweeting out the ammunition” to these domestic terrorists. To @pete.buttigieg rightly pointing out that we have already drawn a line when it comes to the right to bear arms. “Somewhere between a water balloon and a predator drone, we drew a line. The line needs to move.” He agrees, as most folks with his type of military background do, that weapons of war have no place on our streets. @kirstengillibrand, @elizabethwarren, @juliancastrotx, all made BRILLIANT points about the realities facing our communities across the country. As did @corybooker And @betoorourke, who couldn’t be there but still took the time to send in videos in support. Not one person from the GOP attended, or weighed in. Perhaps because they’ve been bought and paid for to the tune of $36.6 million (contributed to Trump alone) by the NRA. They may control the senate now, but WE HAVE THE POWER to VOTE THEM OUT and at least TRY harder for our kids and our communities. And try we must. We do not have to live like this. We do not have to die like this. Let’s clean it up already. Thank you to the candidates for showing up and speaking truth to power. The Moms and Dads and survivors for showing up for those who can’t. To @mspeters14 for letting me share the stage with you and be a witness to your story. Thank you to my soul brother @kennyjamez, for hopping a flight with me and using your photo skills to capture t

Toni. Beloved. The name of one of my favorites of all of her books. The name that best describes her for so many, too. She touched the very core of countless hearts. • “We die,” She once said. “That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.” • How does one write something halfway decent enough to commemorate one of our greatest writers? I don’t know how. But I will ruminate on her courage, her poignancy, and her gift for challenging us to be better. She told her students — and thus taught us all — “When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else.” Indeed. • And she reminded us, with perfect clarity, not to ever give into inaction. No matter what we might be up against. “This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal.” For her, let’s get to work. #ToniMorrison • (photograph by @damonwinter for the @nytimes)

“The role of the artist is exactly the same as the role of the lover. If I love you, I have to make you conscious of the things you don’t see.” Happy 95th Birthday, #JamesBaldwin ♥️ • May we, as he taught us, make ourselves and those around us more conscious in all ways. We could all use that. Our country could use it too. On her, he said it best ... “I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.” Indeed.

I am beyond excited for the premiere of #TIMELINES, a docu-series by my friend @katiecouric and @skii. She travels the world to sit down with women and discuss expectations. In particular, the disconnect that can exist between expectations and dreams. And through the experience, we get to ask what kind of understanding we might be led to, seeing the vastness of the disconnect between them? How do we navigate the expectations of those who love us? Of our own? How do we move — in this ever evolving world — between the desires and pressures around degrees, careers, family, marriage, sexuality, and our futures? Having watched the episodes, I find myself marinating on big ideas. What does freedom mean to us? To the generation before us? To those coming after? What does writing our own rules look like? How do we take control of our own timelines? I cannot wait for you all to see this, head on to @skii to see more. And I’m so glad that a big brand like SK-II has chosen to help fund this project and allow so many of us to come together to hash out the answers to the questions we’ll be asking after watching! My journalism loving, deep-dive-obsessed brain is firing on all cylinders with this one and I’d love to hear what you think in the comments! Well done team #ChangeDestiny #skiipartner

The @baltimoresun for the win. • If Trump hates the citizens of this country so much, and believes our cities are “infested” — a term he uses any time he describes a place predominately populated by black or brown people — perhaps he should resign and take his racism and hatred back to his isolated privilege in his gilded golden tower. He can take his private plane back to the throne he built himself. We deserve a leader who cares about the people more than him (or her) -self.

Here’s a close up of James McDivitt’s photograph of Ed White’s Extravehicular Activity (EVA) in 1965 that’s visible in the BG of my last post. • This was the first time an American had performed an EVA. @nasa viewed this event as a major photo opportunity. “With a Hassleblad aimed through the window of the Gemini 4 spacecraft, McDivitt captured his copilot floating in the vacuum of space, with darkness above and the earth below.” • This photograph ran on the cover of LIFE Magazine on June 18th, 1965.

The interchangeable film magazines were loaded with extra-thin film manufactured for NASA by Eastman Kodak, which increased the capacity from twelve to nearly two hundred frames per roll.” • Dreamy. ✨

Guys. I just spent the morning with the incredible @guidedbybiet. And I love that it’s Friday because there’s no one who deserves a #FierceFemaleFriday or a #FridayFounder shoutout more than this woman!! • Biet’s life story, moving through tragedy and strife, coupled with 30+ years of deep study on meditation and spirituality, mixed up with some serious N.Y. rock-n-roll scene craziness, is one for the books. So much so, that she wrote one! #DontJustSitThere is at once rebellious, modern, enlightening, and illuminating. Reading this book, and getting to deep dive with her today on applying all of this stuff so magically + practically in her own life so that we can all learn too? Well. It’s a game changer. I can’t recommend her work enough. • My sister @stacylondonreal took me to one of Biet’s group meditation/coachings back in April. So I know that she rightly calls Biet “the David Bowie of spiritual teachers.” Let’s all tap into our rock-n-roll stardust. ✨👩‍🎤✨ (swipe through to see pics of her leading an EPIC meditation event recently. She’s pure fiiiiiiiire!! Also, her book link is in her bio, and also in my stories today!)

It’s been a really great week, y’all. Monday was my birthday, and honestly the start of this year feels like a gift I’m slowly opening. Like a reveal. It’s tender. Beautiful. And it feels bigger and more delicious and gooey good than anything ever has before. I find that I’m smiling a lot. Like, beaming. Everywhere I look I see beauty. In humans. The world. On the street. Despite the tragedy we know is there, I see a rising tide of sacred hearts supporting one another. I don’t know how to explain it. But it’s truly shown me that I wouldn’t change one single day — not even the worst ones — if it could risk that I didn’t wind up right here, right now. This goodness is the sum total of every single experience so far, and I’m so excited about all of it. Not to mention what’s to come! • Thanks for coming along for the ride. The ones I know, and the ones I don’t. If you’re putting your heart out there, and in here, I’m grateful for you. Cancer season, I’m so happy to have been born under your moon. • Image description: on my birthday I wound up stopping for coffee at a corner shop that, unbeknownst to my sweet pal driving, was my papa’s first studio in LA. He rented this corner unit space in the early 70’s and began his career there. He stenciled the street address on the building in green paint in 1973. It’s still there. He and my Mom installed these terracotta tiles I’m standing on later. And in 1982, while they were working to ready the first little house we’d live in as a family, I was born, and we lived in the loft at the back of this studio space for a few months. I stood there on my birthday soaking up the roads I’ve traveled since I was a baby being carried home from the hospital across this threshold. A few nights later I took my parents to a restaurant on the same block so they could look at it with me. My Dad can’t believe his stencil is still up. Wild, right? Kismet, one could say. My, my, my I’m such a fan of this universe and the magic it so clearly bestows

What @abbywambach said. • Sister-friend, we are all SO LUCKY to have you! You have taught us about relentless advocacy, humility, courage, and above all, love. G said it best. You’re always pointing towards others. Fighting for others. Loving others. You’re a legend. • **Now, before anyone flips out about “women leading,” the whole point of, as Abby says, “passing us the damn ball” is that we are out here fighting for equity. For fairness. For a level playing field in this game called life. That INCLUDES men. That demands that we build bigger tables where everyone has a seat. ‘Cause 50% of the population, with 50% of the information, making 100% of the decisions hasn’t worked out too well for most folks. So. Give us the damn ball. Move over and let us pull up some chairs. Pass the mic. The social science data and financial data alllllllll show that when parity exists, communities get happier and ROI’s go up up up. So yeah it’s morally right to fight for equity, but it also has hella great social and financial benefits. Don’t be scared. Level the scales. Let us in the c suite, the boardroom, and the friggin’ White House. It’s time.** • And @ussoccer? PAY THE LADIES WHAT YOU OWE THEM. K? Great. Good talk! • As my other sweet dear sister-friend @glennondoyle said of her brilliant wife’s words, “that’s the tea. THE EQUALITEA.” Yup. She said it. It’s coined. What @padmalakshmi said 👇🏼 ・・・ While we celebrate the Fourth, there are refugee families who’ve walked thousands of miles to legally seek asylum in this country sleeping on concrete floors with aluminum blankets and no medical care. This is a stain on our nation and we need to do something now. Contact your representatives tomorrow to demand they #CloseTheCamps. (Link in bio) #4thofjuly #AmericanPie #resist • And now some thoughts from me... Again, seeking asylum is NOT ILLEGAL. What we are willfully doing to these people is wrong. We are violating our own laws to cast them as law breakers, to detain them and abuse them. Tax payers are being forced to fund this abuse to the tune of $775/day/person. Private corporations are making tens of millions of dollars to harm these asylum seekers. 27 dead by our hands, and counting. A stain, indeed. If you want to celebrate the best of America, take two minutes today to call your reps, and leave a message demanding that we uphold our actual values, and that we #CloseTheCamps. If this “is not who we are,” then we mustn’t sit by silently and let this be who we’ve become. ♥️

1/2 • Eighteen months ago I started reading pilot scripts for the 2018 season. I was rejoining the television landscape after a nonnegotiable six month hiatus from sets (thank you to my amazing team at #CAA +#Untitled for respecting that choice & sticking to it with me) and curious about what story I wanted to tell next. • I read a pilot about a 50+ year old woman working in government service, as a writing sample for this guy David C. White. Would we want to develop something, perhaps? Seemed like a yes. And then I read what felt 100’s of other shows. But I kept thinking about THAT one. I didn’t like any of the pilots for women in my demo as much as THAT show. That show called #Surveillance. I called him up and said, “who is that woman before she’s made it to the top? When she’s on her way up, only has one kid, is often the lone skirt in a man’s world, has proven herself countless times but is constantly asked to again and again? Who is SHE, do you think?” And immediately we were collaborators. It only took about a day and half to also become best friends! • We set to redeveloping. We found our North Star in our fearless and incredibly brilliant, almost omniscient director/EP @patriciariggen. We pitched. We sold. We did more drafts. We cast. I spent months — as both a producer & an actor on this job — testing all of the actors who came in. I know from experience how shit those audition rooms can be, so I wanted mine to feel different. Personal. For days & weeks I acted across wonderful talents. We cried. Laughed. Screamed. Debated. We brought the heat. We landed with — and the list is so good it still has me SHOOKETH — @catalinasandino, @therealleech, @matthewmodine, @dennishaysbert, and #RaphaelAcloque. We prepped for months. Shot through November and December, edited January through March. We delivered the highest testing pilot at the network in nearly 10 years — SO PROUD OF US!! — but ultimately, though it’s magic, in the greater landscape of their slate and giv

2/2 • Never give up on what you know to be art. There’s a business here too & sometimes story + financial computations don’t match up. Be an artist anyway. Have as much fun as we did. And if it’s doesn’t work, don’t take it personally. It’s not about you or your project. If I’ve learned anything from my incredible team @cbstv, who have been great leaders, collaborators, & friends on this? The way you work & your level of commitment will leave a mark no matter the outcome. Their calls to discuss what a special thing this is, and to collectively lament that we just simply can’t manage to make it all work on paper, are a testament to that. I’m grateful, as an actor + producer, that the work has made a mark & led to friendships that’ll last a lifetime. And that my bosses are already looking for the next thing we can do together. • I’m beyond excited to carry this experience onto the next one. Of course I’m sad too. That you all won’t get to see Maddy, in all of her capability & fallibility. The woman I was able to create with Dave and Patricia is someone I’d love for you to meet. I’m crushed that the best TV husband there has ever been, @therealleech, is a man you won’t get to know as Mike. Thank GOD Allen & his IRL wife live 8 minutes away & I see them constantly. And Cata. What a TEAM! I love you all, til the end of time. Thank you for showing up and showing OFF with all that talent. You all, collectively, taught me a whole new level of collaboration & joy. • As for the amazing fans who’ve been so excited about this project and what’s coming next, thank you for the love! What this means, in technical terms, is that I’m no longer being held from doing other jobs! (*And thank you to @20thcenturyfox for giving me a pass on that contract clause to work on things I love, like #EAS

Today we #WearOrange 🧡 To honor both gun violence victims and survivors. The people who died in prayer. In churches. In synagogues. In mosques. The people who lost their lives at the movies. At concerts. The kids executed in their high schools. In middle schools. In elementary schools. Pre-schools, even. Kids killed on college campuses. The folks who died when they thought they would be dancing. In a bar. A nightclub. The ones who were killed in a hospital, where you’re meant to heal. In the airport. The newsroom. The yoga studio. At home. Where women are 5x more likely to die in a domestic dispute if a gun is present. We honor those killed in their offices. In their city municipal building. In a restaurant. Those killed on their military base. At their local bowling alley. Standing on a street corner. Those lost because they showed up for their community at a political event, on what was apparently the wrong day. I wear orange for my cousin’s nine year old daughter — who I never got to meet because we always thought there would be plenty of opportunities for the family to eventually be in the same state at the same time — None of us could have imagined that a grown man would shoot a nine year old girl in the chest, indiscriminately, as though a little child could ever deserve such a thing. Time is an illusion. I will never forget that. We all wear orange to call attention to the national crisis that kills 100 Americans every single day. We do not have to live and die like this. There is a better way. @momsdemand @everytown @iamavoter #momsdemandaction #everytown #gunviolence #iamavoter

1/2 A few months ago I had the pleasure of doing an overhaul of my house with the amazing people at @lifeinjeneral. I’d been slowly feeling suffocated by stuff. Things. Tchotchkes. Side tables. For 15 years I’d lived in two states, and when I got everything home under one roof, rather than pair it all down my inner Sentimental Sally took over and I crammed memories and books and dish ware and papers — seriously what is with all the paperwork!? I ask that question of LIFE itself! — into every available space. And then there was no space to breathe. Piles of organized chaos would pop up near the washer and dryer, or on the corner of the couch in the living room. Occasionally there would be suitcases everywhere because “I travel so much for work!” They’d come and go, sure, but the piles remained. The garage was utter insanity, but because I never had to look at it I never really did. I just stopped going in there. I couldn’t figure out why I was SO good at helping other people move, organize, and edit, and yet I couldn’t see my own stuff clearly. I could clear out a friend’s home in a weekend, but couldn’t see the forest for the trees of my own stuff. Marie Kondo says you can do it yourself. Well. I threw that book away — jk, jk I gave it to someone who wanted it and I still love her and her philosophy — for me it was too hard. Too confusing. Everything meant something! I needed a professional. Otherwise I was gonna need a professional in a white coat to lock me up pretty soon. • And that’s when I met Jen from @lifeinjeneral. The bun that is @publiclivessecretrecipes introduced us. Jen came over and I could see her brain working some invisible organizational geometry as she looked in my closet, in the garage, at my desk space, and at just about everything else. “Hmm,” she’d utter, over and over again, until eventually she said “We could do some of this better.” She was beyond kind about it. I didn’t feel overwhelmed anymore, I felt excited. And the next day the angel

2/2 For five days we went through everything. Extra furniture stacked where my car was meant to go, old birthday cards, photos from high school theatre, clothes that I didn’t need but someone would love, makeup, even towels. We used the garage like a workshop/processing center, and we packed up multiple carloads of donations for the LGBT center here in LA. We got through all of the paperwork and photos and kept only what was meaningful and important. We organized my clothes and shoes and swimsuits and sweaters in a way that was not only beautiful, but that I’ve managed to keep up with. When the team left, and I walked around the house, I realized that I could really breathe. That the space they’d helped me clear was space for my mind to rest, to wander, and to be creative too. I wanted to share all of this with y’all then, to talk about what a gift this was. But then the awful shooting happened in New Zealand and I couldn’t imagine talking about myself. Many terrible things continued happening, over and over again, and so I still didn’t share. I felt silly. But over the last two months I’ve realized that my home feels better than ever to me, and in no small way I owe that to Jordan’s kindness and the team’s hard work. And the fact that my closet still looks as good as when they left!? That drawers and cabinets and my garage actually still make sense!? That’s a clear sign to me that there was a better way to do things. And they showed me. And it stuck. And I’m so excited about it. I even spent the next day organizing the kitchen, wound up building pantry shelves, and got my hundreds of books into a library-level organization zone. I walked almost six miles IN MY OWN HOUSE, working! And it was pure joy! I was so inspired. Now the whole place is tight and awesome. And I guess I wanted to share all of this with you to say that celebrating matters, especially when shit has felt dark out there. And if you’re holding onto things you don’t need, or your life feels clutter

[part one of four] I’ve taken a lot of time away from here. From the platforms and the feeds. The onslaught has felt exhausting. And as I try to cultivate a deeper and more gentle relationship with myself and my health, the onslaught can feel like an attack. Especially when humans are being attacked. Women, and our rights. Citizens in their places of work. Our government, and sacred institutions, by hostile foreign powers. Our environment, as the science clarifying its demise is purposefully hidden by those who wish to bring it to its knees for short-term profit, forgetting the longterm consequence that will affect us all, no matter what gold we’ve hoarded. It feels like a lot. And I feel so incredibly lucky that as this weight felt unbearable, it was time for @mountainfilm. I am so thankful. • The theme of this year’s festival was equity. The stories shared were those that committed to highlight and honor those who are so often othered in the world. To learn at the feet of these characters, these very real people, who leapt off the screen and into my mind and heart — who now own pieces of that innermost real estate forever — was an education and a reckoning. An awakening and a reaffirming. A reminder of how much there is to be done, and of how many good people are out there doing as much as they can, and more, and inviting us along. • @changinggamedoc introduced me to three brave, beautiful, high school athletes. Each of these kids is trans. Each of these kids is made of more courage and heart and determination than I can fathom. I cheered. I wept. I laughed. And I know that everyone who sees this film will do the same, and likewise be ready to fight for these kids. What they face is complex, and differing policies state to state make their experiences no easier. We can do better. @alpha.trans, @sarahrose_trans, & @andrayayearwood thank you for your love and hugs. • @fireonthehill tells the story of the Cowboys of South Central LA. [part two of four, @fireonthehill cont’d] These men open up their lives, their culture, and the life-saving magic of horses. Something that has not left me is Calvin saying in the Q&A after the film, “riding saved me… from the gangs and the cops.” Horses gave him a pass. They gave him a life. Their barn, The Hill, tragically burned down and the city of LA hasn’t made replacing it easy for these guys. What Angelenos out there want to raise some good trouble with us — we need to rally behind their charitable initiative @urbansaddles — and make sure The Hill rides again?! All hands on deck! • @hillbillymovie by #AshleyYork is a powerful look at Appalachia, and the stereotypes about the region that have inflicted generational suffering on the people who live there. Stereotypes dehumanize. As as this dehumanization has been applied to many of Appalachia’s residents, this has caused political and economic policy to ravage the land and its people. The harm is heartbreaking, the people profiled are full of complex goodness like most of us are, and the parallels between their community and many other marginalized communities, who suffer so that gargantuan systems may benefit, is undeniable. This film reminded to me listen more closely. To do the work of not assuming. And to lean on what I know to be true. We are more alike than different. And everyone is deserving of support. • I saw some incredible short films too. #GrizzlyCountryFilm by my dearest @ben_moon, which focuses on the work Doug Peacock has been doing (since he returned home from the Vietnam war) to save the Grizzlies and protect our wilderness. #TheLoveBugsFilm by @allisonotto explores the nature of love and love of nature through two entomologists, Charlie and Lois O’Brien. Their love for bugs has given the scientific community, and the world, a priceless gift in their collection. And their love for each other made it all possible. #BareExistence by my friend @max.lowe tells the heartbreaking story of what cli

[part three of four ] @diangelorobin Robin DiAngelo, the author of ‘White Fragility,’ spoke about white privilege with @favianna1 Favianna Rodriguez, and how allyship must be earned. She unpacked implicit bias, which is sewn into the very fabric of our culture, and how it harms each of us and culture as a whole. I cannot tell you how important it is to listen to her on podcasts, watch her interviews, and read her book. If we want know where to start, what this is all about, what people of color face in America at the hands of whiteness as an ideology, or how to help, we must stop asking those affected to do the emotional labor. This is a good place to start learning, and unlearning too. • I got to sit at the feet of two of my greatest teachers, @oprah and @cherylstrayed, and listen to them converse on life and purpose. Oprah said, “You are damaged in direct proportion to how you were loved or not. You real job is to figure out ‘what is it that I really need?’” It’s an inside job. We have to do the work. We have to own our pain and pursue our joy. We have to lift each other up. She told us, “The most powerful thing you can say to anybody, ‘I see you.’” • The films I didn’t get to see, but are at the top of my list to see next are: - @17blocksfilm. This film is compiled of 20 years of home video taken by the Sanford-Durant family, and is a window into the fight to survive in America. - @gaychorusdeepsouth tells the story of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus touring through the nation’s most conservative states. The music offers a window to unity, and these men are hugged tightly by folks who have previously spoken ill of their existence. one of my best friends said of witnessing the kindness on screen, and not having had it in his own Southern church as a young man, “Something wounded in me behind my consciousness that begged for those hugs.” - @sweetheartdancers2019 is the story of a gay, Indigenous couple who compete as traditional dancers, honoring both their heri

[part four] I think that’s why @MountainFilm means so much to me. It is a place to SEE. To look into the very core of people and communities and issues and the planet. To stand before the fire and not look away. • It’s fitting that sweet friend @milckmusic graced the festival with her presence and her beautiful voice, and gave it the anthem: “I can’t keep quiet.” We cannot keep quiet. Here’s to the learning and the rising. Let’s dive in, together. #MountainFilm2019

Today I honor my momma, Maureen. • Today I honor each of you who love your mommas, who are mommas, and each of you who’ve lost your mommas and still miss them so deeply that it aches. I honor those of you who perhaps don’t have a relationship with your mommas, have one that’s complicated or painful, or have had to sever your relationship with your mommas so that you might better nurture yourselves. • I honor each of you who are mommas in your communities. To the children in your lives who might not have been born to you, but to whom you give of yourselves. Each of you who are mommas to your neighbors, and friends, and aging parents. • And today I might, most of all, feel a breathtaking amount of love for all the migrant mommas out there — hundreds of them — who are without their babies today. We will not stop fighting for you. We will take all the love that our mommas gave us and turn it toward you. Today and every day until your babies are back in your arms. That’s where babies are supposed to be. • If you are looking for ways to support these mommas, and to help advocate for them so that their pain and trauma might be reduced, SWIPE to see some of my favorite ladies in the great tees @phenomenal.ly designed to benefit @fams2gether. A purchase of one is an easy way to honor #PhenomenalMother(s) #FamiliesBelongTogether 💖

Today marks one year since the Trump administration began its utterly revolting and inhumane practice of ripping thousands of families apart. There is no excuse for this. Our dear @shannonsedg wrote a book so powerful that’ll it’ll pound your heart like a drum. #ToStopAWarlord is about the collective efforts of traditionally separate verticals — advocacy, finance, activism, philanthropy, and the military of more than one country — who at her behest worked cohesively to bring Joseph Kony to justice. And it is also the story of our brother @ocittid, and his unfathomable experiences at the hands of the LRA. His willingness to relive trauma so that we might collectively shed light on mass atrocity, and avoid genocide in the future, must be recognized with gratitude. • With all of the efforts mentioned above “aiming at the same North Star,” as Shannon puts it, the world was changed for the better. The outcome isn’t perfect yet, but advocacy and change are paths that require long term dedication and patience to be paired with unrelenting commitment and effort. This book is a guide. An inspiration. And a wake up call. Humanity can degrade to the worst version of itself more quickly than any of us would like to admit. But if we refuse to forget the North Star of our collective soul, which in David’s words means knowing that “life isn’t life without a life next to me,” we can turn the ship around and pursue restorative justice and community for all. • David and Shannon, being called a sister to you both is one of the great honors of my life. Thank you for letting me sit at your feet and learn from you all these years. Much love to the #BridgewayFoundation, #InvisibleChildren, #PathwaysToPeaceUganda, @larenpoole @adamfinck @jasonradical @danicarussell @bobbybailey @jedidiahjenkins @kennyjamez and the rest of the family who dedicated immense time and resources to telling these stories for the last 15 years. I know you, and we, will never give up. I love you all. • *I broadcast OUR DISCUSSION to IG LIVE this morning, and it will be up for the next day. Please give it a watch. It’s profound and illuminating*

What’s my cheeky sweatshirt about, you wonder? USED CLOTHES, friends! I’m so thrilled to partner with @thredUP X my pal @OliviaWilde — and her company @ConsciousCo — to share their #ChooseUsed Collection. Check it out at thredup.com/chooseused (link in my bio). • thredUP X Olivia Wilde and @ConsciousCo re-designed thousands of pieces of used clothes (like my sweatshirt 💁🏻‍♀️) that are cool, retro and all celebrate fashion reuse. The whole goal is to combat the fashion waste crisis. Did you guys know it’s a crisis!? Fashion is the second most polluting industry after oil!! This is not okay. Keeping clothes in use longer makes a difference. So does buying vintage, having clothing swaps with friends, or borrowing from a pal instead of buying new stuff for special occasions. • However you choose to make an impact in your own life, you can start today, and help combat fashion waste by reposting this (make sure to tag @thredUP and #ChooseUsed)!! @thredup will donate $1 to the Circular Fashion Fund when you do! #ReduceReuseRecycle #ChooseUsed ♻️🌱💚

Merci pour tout @pompiers_paris ♥️💔 Grateful for all of the first responders who risk it all for us, anytime and any place. #NotreDame • Victor Hugo wrote of the significance of Norte Dame, in “The Hunchback.” His musings feel incredibly appropriate now, as we all try to form the words that explain why this destruction cuts us to the core... This Cathedral is a symbol of resilience. History. And humanity. I’ll leave it to him ... • “Great edifices, like great mountains, are the work of centuries. Art often undergoes a transformation while they are pending, pendent opera interrupta; they proceed quietly in accordance with the transformed art. The new art takes the monument where it finds it, incrusts itself there, assimilates it to itself, develops it according to its fancy, and finishes it if it can. The thing is accomplished without trouble, without effort, without reaction,— following a natural and tranquil law. It is a graft which shoots up, a sap which circulates, a vegetation which starts forth anew. Certainly there is matter here for many large volumes, and often the universal history of humanity in the successive engrafting of many arts at many levels, upon the same monument. The man, the artist, the individual, is effaced in these great masses, which lack the name of their author; human intelligence is there summed up and totalized.” • via @voxdotcom #VictorHugo #PompiersDeParis

It’s been a week. Still not quite sure what to say, but I needed a break from the internet. Needed to be quiet and hold my heart in the tender comfort of best friends and community. We lost our sweet Penny girl last Thursday. We knew it was coming, but we didn’t know how quickly the day would be upon us. For the last seven days we’ve cried, laughed, and missed her with an ache that is hard to describe. We’ve traded photos, and been so supported by our loved ones. • I loved Penny from the moment I met her. She was a special, wild, rambunctious little thing. Tiny. Sweet. With giant ears, always at attention. Penny brought me my best friend. @jsmizzie met Penny before she even met me, while I was gone for the weekend and friends in NC were watching my little copper penny puppy, and Patch. The first thing Jenny ever said to me was “I love your dogs!” It’s still an inside joke in our house, to this day. Penny was our mascot. Our welcome wagon. And our guard dog. She helped me, Jenny, @vanessamagos, and Patch survive Griffin’s puppyhood, which was insufferable at times. And even into their adulthood, Penny cleaned his ears every evening around sundown. They were inseparable. Always touching. Always sleeping in a tangled pretzel. Seeing him look for her in the house makes my heart catch in my throat. He misses her too. We all do. Sure, Penny was mine, but she was truly ours. She was family. • Adopt a dog if you’ve ever wanted to. It’ll change your life. It’ll blow your heart open and teach you how big it is. It’ll fill your house with laughter and love. And leave you better than you were before. Sending big love to all the rescuers out there. There’s never enough time, but there’s more than enough love to go around. ♥️ #AdoptDontShop #PennyliciousThePup @pitbullsofinstagram 🐾

The tragic death of @nipseyhussle on Sunday is really weighing heavy on my heart, y’all. What this man meant to LA... We weren’t from the same neighborhood. We never met — though as a fan of his music and his truly entrepreneurial mind I hoped we would one day — but I considered him a role model. A leader. An example. • His savvy began with his music, in limited mixtapes. It spanned to his investment strategy, pouring uncommon dollars into Crenshaw, anchoring his #Marathon clothing store there, opening #Vector90, a coworking space for local entrepreneurs — with a STEM program to create access to tech based jobs and training — and with bold plans to build new residential projects. Rather than take his money outside of his neighborhood, he was keeping it local, and lifting up his community. He was the kind of man who showed up at the local elementary school with new shoes for every kid. He was also passionate about holistic health, and in the midst of making a documentary about Dr. Sebi’s fight against AIDS. He loved his girl, @laurenlondon, and his kids. • In our time building @detroitblows, @nialauryn and I have often referenced Nipsey’s work as inspiration for our own. He reminded us to double down on fighting for Detroit and to encourage investment in other Opportunity Zones that need visionary support. Like I said... we never met, but he was a role model. • My heart hurts for his loved ones and his community. What a loss. Rest In Power, king. All my prayers for Lauren. 🖤

One of the things that’s rarely mentioned in this current world of “internet success,” and “does-everyone-have-it-figured-out-but-me” self-doubt, is the work behind the work. We have some big things happening @detroitblows. This is a year-and-a-half into our doors being open to the public, and at least that long prior to opening in business development and planning, raising funds, and so many spreadsheets my head still spins when I think about them. • But here we are, loving it still. This feels like passion and purpose. This mission of #equitable #access and #representation for all women lives in our bones. Our commitment to reinvesting funds in women in our community and #femaleentrepreneurs, to start pushing for more #equity in #finance and women’s access to it, has not waned. It’s grown. #Detroit, quite literally, grows. • But ... I just want to be #transparent that this has required long nights, tough decisions, and personal sacrifice. That it isn’t glamorous. It’s not a party. But it’s everything to us. • So to anyone out there building their dream, fighting for their community, trying to raise capital, or having doors slammed in your face ... we see you. We believe in you. Don’t give up. It won’t be easy. It hasn’t been for us either. And when you have a day like this one, and you wrap work on a Saturday night at 10:39pm and had to blow off your pal’s dinner and a few other commitments, just know that more cheers-over-dinner are coming. It’s all worth it. Your vision matters. And even though currently women get small percentages of available financing — and #WOC even less — you have some far-off sisters out here fighting alongside you for parity and representation. You are loved. • And if you’re ever in Detroit, you can come into our salon for a blowout and a hug and high five, anytime. We believe in going #BeyondTheBlowout. We believe in you. We are #DetroitBlows. • @nialauryn @katycockrel @detroitblows 🖤💇‍♀️🌱 #sisterhood

Once you start training at @gstbody, you realize the world is your oyster. Or rather, your jungle gym. And every bike rack/countertop/airport chair/lamppost becomes something you can use to do the #GSTpulloff. And suddenly being in your body is fun, your tissues are animating, and movement — that creates fitness & wellness — becomes a joy and a not a chore. Thank you @annaraheofgst for giving me the keys to my own lock. And for hanging off of bike racks on Sunset Boulevard with me and @kendrabrackenferguson. That’s #sisterhood 🤣💃🏻😘

Salaam Alaikum means “peace be unto you,” and is the standard greeting of the Muslim faith. Salaam means peace. In Islam, Friday is jumu’ah, the day of prayer. And last Friday, a man was greeted at the door of the ChristChurch mosque in New Zealand by Daoud Nabi, who said “come in brother.” That man opened fire on the congregation and killed 50 people. #50Lives. It has taken me a week to crawl out from under the anvil on my chest and write about this. • I have been privileged enough to visit mosques over the years, and pray with some of my closest friends. I am always struck in the deepest part of my heart by the greeting, “welcome, sister,” or “come in, sister.” I have always been made to feel at home. Faith is supposed to do that. To welcome all. To encourage kindness, and empathy, and service, and love. The demonization of our brothers and sisters, the faithful of Islam, is a sin. Period. Islamic extremism is no more “Muslim” than any white nationalist is “a Christian.” EVERY religion teaches compassion. The Koran teaches that anyone who kills one person kills all of humanity. Let that sink in. ALL OF HUMANITY. So let us stop. Stop tolerating whatever the far right is doing. Stop doing “profile pieces” on Nazis and fascists. Stop saying “it’s just a small group of people” (POTUS, I’m looking at you). White nationalism is terrorism. Period. Let us condemn it as such. We should have learned this, as a people, by now. Let us do better. Let us all learn from Jacinda Ardern. She is the leader the world needs and deserves. She is our North Star now. Let us learn from the Maori, and stand in solidarity with our communities, quite literally arm in arm at their doors when they are most vulnerable. • Sufism is called the heart of Islam, and is truly the heart of all faith: peace, compassion, and oneness. The collective heart. Let ours all beat together and drown out any hatred, any disinformation, and anything but love. Insha’Allah 🙏 Image descriptions: 1. Maori men offer

[part 2] 1. Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, comforting grieving members of the ChristChurch Muslim community. She wore a hijab as a sign of respect, and both deemed the tragedy an act of terrorism and told mourners that New Zealanders were all “united in grief.” This is a leader. 2. Ardern telling ChristChurch mourners “New Zealand mourns with you” and introduces two minutes of silence in New Zealand during which the Call to Prayer was observed. 3. A tribute to the #50Lives lost by @alhassan.elmasri. 4. Jacinda Ardern announcing NZ banning all military style rifles. 5. A 3 year old boy, the same age as the youngest ChristChurch mosque victim Mucaad Ibrahim, mourns with his family. 6. Prayer carpets laid out to honor the #50Lives lost at ditib-Central Mosque in Cologne, Germany. 7. The Mongrel Mob biker gang shows up to guard their local mosque and honor the fallen with the haka. Let the world unite against hate. Insha’Allah. 🙏

#ad Last night I had the supreme pleasure, along with Jane Walker by @JohnnieWalkerUS, of having an important and powerful conversation about women. And I got to do so alongside some of my #sheroes! Vanity Fair deputy editor of The Hive Claire Landsbaum, Axios’ new CTO Jess Szmajda (hey women in tech!), Sophie Kelly, Senior VP of North American Whiskeys at Diageo + ultimate ladyboss, and my bestie and business partner in #DetroitBlows, Nia Batts. We laughed a lot, I cried once (only once, that’s impressive!) and we all shared the highs and lows of our own adventures in kicking down doors to take our seats at the table of business and leadership. It was incredible. • I will always fight for gender equality and parity, and I am proud to partner with a brand who stands for — and pushes forward! — progress. I’m truly grateful to this team for hosting my dream panel with me. At the New York Historical Society, no less!? Swoon. Plus they make a damn good whiskey, so afterward cheers were had! This International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate how far we’ve come, and gear up for the journey ahead. Let’s #WalkWithJane

@selmablair you are a vision. This photograph encapsulates your bravery and strength. Your talent, humor, and perseverance are awe-inspiring. • I just sat down to watch this incredible woman be interviewed by @robinrobertsgma on GMA. The frankness. The opening of the door into physical illness. The fearless honesty. It was all breathtaking. And full of laughter. And just so poignant. Selma’s willingness to let us all into her world as she battles MS means that so many people out there will feel less alone. Her reality check, that, with treatment, in a year she could be so much better. 90% to be exact. Or she might not be. But no matter what, so long as she can still sit and have a conversation like this one, it’ll be “good enough.” It’s hopeful and raw. Her vibrancy is beautiful. • I’m very grateful for all of the people out there who lean into what might make others turn away. Who, by opening up in their moments of trial, pain, growth, or vulnerability, give each and every one of us who bears witness the permission to say, “you too?” What a gift. #SelmaBlair #ms 📷 @markseliger

This. A moment. #Repost @nialauryn ・・・ Long before I knew Peter, I always admired his work on the walls of my friends and loved seeing his outdoor installations. His painted collages bore images and sayings that always uplifted me; “Grattitude” (yes with two t’s), “Don’t Panic” (a welcome reminder) and my personal favorite that covered a massive billboard on the freeway riding into New York City, “Nothing Happens Unless First A Dream.” • One morning while Peter & I were meeting for breakfast, he asked me if I had seen the paper, and when he slid it across the table I saw that the headline read: “City of Detroit Files for Bankruptcy” — and for a moment, my heart stopped. • I was born & raised in the city of Detroit and left to attend school in New York when I was 18. And the years that passed during my time away turned out to be some of the city’s most economically devastating. But true to the spirit of my hometown and the people who inhabit it, those years also became some of the most hopeful. Detroit is the “renaissance city”; the very essence of rebirth & perseverance is in our bones & blood, in our music & art. • While I was away I actively found ways to bring the work I was doing in New York back home to Detroit, but it would still be 5 years after reading that headline that my co-founders & I would bring Blows to life on Library Street. Dreams can be hard, and they can also take a really long time. • In December of 2018 I received a call from Peter, congratulating us on our 1 year anniversary. He was calling from his Miami studio in the Wynwood Walls, and in the midst of Art Basel no less. He said he was working on something for us. Peter had been hunting & archiving images of Detroit, its people, its spirit, its gifts to the world, and he wanted everyone in the salon to have the opportunity to see it before it was done. We were overwhelmed with emotion when it showed up in person the day before Christmas. • Dreams can be hard, and they can also take a really l

Lori Alhadeff wrote a letter to her daughter Alyssa, who died one year ago, on 2/14/18, at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School. • Alyssa was 14. She was sad that she didn’t have a Valentine. She wore a black and white dress to school. Lori said “I love you,” & could not have known that it would be the last time she’d hear Alyssa say it back. • This should be required reading for everyone, including all members of Congress, in advance of tomorrow’s tragic anniversary. • We have a gun violence problem in America. A problem that robs families of their loved ones, robs children of their future chances to fall in first love, robs us of schools, movie theaters, churches, mosques, synagogues. Of barbershops and holiday parties. Offices. Home improvement stores. Town halls. Even our own homes. • I say all of this as a weapons-trained hobbyist and a gun owner. Know that before you accuse me of not understanding. I do. And because I do, I will continue to firmly state that we have a problem. We need a solution. And better regulations, a national database, universal background checks + universal waiting periods, and the removal of guns from those who commit domestic violence are ALL a start. If you are on a no-fly list, you shouldn’t be able to buy a gun. Gun laws shouldn’t be more lax than the laws that surround motor vehicles. These are facts. We all need to take a breath and figure out where our mythology around these issues comes from. Why we cling to outdated ideals. How we can do better, innovate, maintain versions of hobbies & lifestyles AND better protect our kids. Because let me tell you something, I’d miss my range days if I could never have them again. But if it meant the MSD 17, and the 1,100+ kids who’ve been killed by guns in this country SINCE the MDS shooting would still be alive? Whelp. I’d give them up. The REALITY is that no one is asking anyone to give up their hobby. Just to regulate it better. In the face of all these dead kids, we FIGHT that?? • It’s t

The deeply emotional, and vulnerable, and scary. Fear. Love. Communication. The infinite potential of outcomes. Who we want to be. And how much we really, really need to look in the mirror and figure out what’s happening underneath what we see, how we behave, and where we run to. And finally, where we might go instead if only we had the chance or awareness to take a different path. This is a gift. And while I’m on the subject of bestie love (SWIPE!) and the work we do together that centers diverse and incredible women, CHECK THIS OUT!! 😍 There’s @nialauryn, featured at number 45 on @popsugar’s list of 49 amazing women who personify #BlackGirlMagic in honor of #BlackHistoryMonth by @brittsteps (#linkinbio) • Nini is featured alongside our pals Patrice Cullors @osopepatrisse and Tarana Burke @taranajaneen. And women we #girlboss crush on from afar like Candice Patton @candicepatton, Courtney Kemp @courtneyakemp, Devin Ki’Elle @devinkielle , and Kamala Harris @kamalaharris! Also @kellyrowland hiiiii we love you! (We almost said the other day at @soulcycle but no one wants to be fangirled after a sweat session! 😜) Each woman shared a piece of what she loves about her culture, and how she moves in the world. • Nia’s words: "My name, Nia, is the fifth principle of Kwanzaa, meaning purpose. And from a very early age, my parents instilled a sense of pride and celebration of my culture and my blackness that exists to this day (even, and especially, at times when people and systems tried to undermine it). Before this adventure into the beauty industry, I worked primarily in media and entertainment, and the dialogue around identity, representation, and who gets to participate is very similar. Every time I walk into our shop on Library Street in Detroit, I am very humbled and proud of the space we've made and what it means to the community who inhabits it." • I’m so proud of you sister!! And I’m so lucky to do life with you, learn from you, and watch you shine! ✨

I’m a story-teller. An activist. And a theater lover. Education is my passion. I fundamentally believe we need to transform our high schools so they work for ALL young people – no matter their race, gender or zip code. I’m excited to be on the host committee of XQ Super School Live with @ava & @rafaelcasal. It’s a new one-of-a-kind, immersive storytelling tour to inspire people to reimagine high schools in their community from @XQAmerica and @Pop-Up Magazine. It’s going to be a night of high school drama full of stories, selfie confessionals, viral gratitude, and multimedia adventures that celebrate the everyday heroes transforming America's high schools! To learn more & get tickets go to the link in bio @XQAmerica! Proceeds from ticket sales benefit local non-profit organizations. • And here’s some data (my favorite thing) to illustrate what our education issue looks like. We can do better. We can offer better to our students! . While two-thirds of high school graduates go on to college, 52% of those in 2-year colleges and 20% of those in 4-year colleges must take remedial courses for knowledge and skills they should have gotten in high school. The bottom line, as a nation $1 BILLION every year on remedial courses. . One in six 9th graders drops out before graduating . 47% of seniors don’t complete the courses they need to be college- and/or career ready. . At graduation, only 46% of seniors are ready for college-level reading, just 40% are ready in math.

Last night I was lucky enough to see @thewoostergroup’s “The B-Side: Negro Folklore From Texas State Prisons.” @eric_berryman leads the cast, taking the audience through what the @nytimes called “a masterclass in listening.” • And indeed it is. This play draws you in, as the men sing songs recorded in the 1960s, and Berryman reads passages from “Wake Up Dead Man: Hard Labor and Southern Blues.” The audience is transported back to the prison systems of the south during the Civil Rights movement. Some of the music harkens back farther, to the era of slave songs. And all of it, in this modern moment where we are witnessing a rise in racially motivated hate crimes. In the rise of privatized prisons that put profit over people, and are incentivized to keep people in a broken system. And even this week, prisoners trapped in New York without heat or warm food, is a knife through the heart. Because no matter how far we’ve come, we haven’t come far enough. Because the men working on these 1960s next-stage versions of chain gangs were subjugated by a prison system that was born to continue the legacy of slavery, and that benefited from back breaking manual labor carried out by black bodies. We must confront where we come from, as a nation, if we will ever change. • I couldn’t help but cry as I listened to men sing about being forced to run to the fields where they worked, chased by wardens and their “n***er dogs.” That a dog trained to hunt & tear apart the flesh of prisoners was so common it had a nickname and a song should tell us something. I had the chills as I watched footage of these prisoners, chopping trees in eerie synchronized motions. And, thanks to the hearts & minds of the men recorded, and the way their singing and storytelling was performed by the actors on that stage, I also experienced welcome moments of humor & laughter & joy, too. This show runs the full gamut. It’s truly an important thing to witness, in its stillness and thoughtfulness and spirit. • I’m g

Yesterday, to honor MLK and his legacy, I spent time with @laylafsaad‘s #MeAndWhiteSupremacyWorkbook. I wanted to honor him by doing work. By unpacking the world from which I (and folks like me) benefit (consciously or unconsciously) and sit with those thoughts. I’ve been trying to spend less time on the internet and more time in the real world. And thinking about how to double down on activism in the present means, for me, sitting with lessons of the past and trying to figure out how to bring them more and more into daily life. What questions do we need to ask ourselves to do that? I needed to sit with them. And then I read my soul sister Glennon’s words, and knew that she’d spoken what I wanted to share. So. For him. For us. For yesterday. For the future. #Repost @glennondoyle: ・・・ Please consider this while we celebrate MLK Jr today: 75 percent of white people did not approve of MLK when he was alive. I think it’s easy for people of privilege to love a dead civil rights activist, because he is no longer a threat to the white supremacy that serves and protects us. If we want to know how we’d have felt about MLK back then, we don’t ask ourselves how we feel about him now. If we want to know if we’d have felt about MLK Jr. back then - we ask ourselves- how do I feel about Colin Kaepernick now? How do I feel about Black Lives Matter? If we want to know how we would have shown up in the last civil rights era- we just ask ourselves how we’re showing up in this civil rights era. I know I’ve put this in my stories, but I truly cannot stop watching @iamcardib be spot on about this bs shutdown. Reminder that the $$ Drumpf is withholding isn’t his. It’s OURS. It’s tax money we’ve all payed, and it’s unconscionable that he is withholding it from workers and services because he cannot get a bill passed through proper legal process. That’s not how democracy works. That’s a dictatorship. • Our National Parks, federal workers (including TSA workers who are the ones actually catching high risk/problematic criminals trying to come into the country) and even our DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTERS are suffering, and in danger of closing. And! AND! The Violence Against Women Act has expired. None of this is acceptable. Every day I’m yelling at the TV watching coverage. I haven’t wanted to post videos of myself swearing at my newsfeed because that’s not my best self. But damn if Cardi didn’t say everything I’ve been thinking, with far more humor and far less profanity. She’s a national treasure. That is all. #repost @iamcardib ・・・ I know a lot of ya do r watch the news so I’m letting ya know shit getting real .....I ain’t going to say nothing much tho I don’t want mofos to off me.....ANYWAYS TWERK VIDEO OUT NOW

Yesterday I was tearing my house apart looking for something. My computer charger, to be exact. I was in work-work-work mode. Not to be distracted or deterred. Goals! Hustle! As I started scrounging around the shelf underneath my old coffee table, I didn’t see the cord. But I did see one of my favorite books. Its linen spine. With clean lettering bearing my favorite poet’s name: Mary Oliver. I grabbed the book, sat down, flipped to a random page and started reading. A smile crept across my face. I started paying attention to the way the LA air smelled of fresh rain, and to the odd rhythm of it falling. Mary shifts you back to what’s important, and clicks you firmly into place. • And then this morning I woke up and heard she’d died. What an ache. To lose a person you always felt you could turn to. What a strange feeling, given that the person was someone you’d never met... yet, here I am. Heart sore. Whose words could better mark today than hers: . “When death comes like the hungry bear in autumn; when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse . to buy me, and snaps the purse shut; when death comes like the measle-pox . when death comes like an iceberg between the shoulder blades, . I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering: what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness? . And therefore I look upon everything as a brotherhood and a sisterhood, and I look upon time as no more than an idea, and I consider eternity as another possibility, . and I think of each life as a flower, as common as a field daisy, and as singular, . and each name a comfortable music in the mouth, tending, as all music does, toward silence, . and each body a lion of courage, and something precious to the earth. . When it's over, I want to say all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms. . When it's over, I don't want to wonder if I have made of my life something particular, and real. . I don't want

So last Tuesday night I had the supreme honor of presenting the #NationalBoardOfReview award for #BestAnimatedFeature to my dear Brad Bird for #Incredibles2. • It was a storybook kind of night. Glamorous. Inspiring. I watched @williegeist and @trevornoah be brilliant and political and perfect in person. Steven Spielberg made Bradly Cooper tear up. I gave @awkwafina a high five. She’s so dope. And I got to do it all in this insanely beautiful @zacposen gown. @kentshire jewels. An @edie_parker bag. Talk about a pinch me evening. • Then last night, I spent twenty minutes on one knee, cleaning up piles of dog vomit in my house, whilst wearing sweatpants and a PMS-break-out-fighting charcoal face mask... so. What a difference a week makes. • I believe this is what the universe calls “balance.” The Universe ain’t letting me get a big head anyyyy time soon... 🤣 #instalife vs #reallife #glamsometimes #onlysometimes #dogmommostofthetime • Thank you to the team @robertsesnek @djquintero @zacposen + my @pixar family for getting me all done up and having me join you on such a special night! And to the @nbrfilm for honoring storytelling in such a beautiful way!! ♥️

This is Jazmine Barnes. Her little face breaks my heart ... because she was executed. Her family was targeted. A white man, with light eyes (blue or green), a beard (remember, he could have shaved it afterward), in a red/burgundy 4 door truck pulled up to her family near a #Houston Walmart. He shot Jazmine in the head. Shot her mother, who is in the hospital. He kept shooting. Her family is devastated. HE REMAINS AT LARGE. • The kind of hate you have to have in your heart to do this... I don’t have the words. But @shaunking has $25,000 ready as a reward for anyone with information that leads to this horrid man’s capture. (More info in my stories and on Shaun’s page.) • My hope, my prayer, my dream for 2019, is that each and every one of us who believes in justice, community, and kindness comes together like never before. That we double down. Do more work. Have more uncomfortable conversations. And that we harness our scared rage to stand for our neighbors with fierce love and conviction. #JazmineBarnes #SayHerName (DESCRIPTION UPDATED ABOVE. Be sure to follow @shaunking for more.)

Yesterday I was being interviewed, and when the woman I was speaking with asked me what over the course of my adult life has felt the most meaningful, “activism and philanthropy” came out of my mouth before I had a second to consciously consider the question. I immediately thought about opening this school in Guatemala. About fundraising raffles and each of you who has joined those calls with me. Cultivating a practice of giving, and of showing up, makes life exponentially better. So many people I care about have taken this holiday season to donate to charities I care about in my name. So that we can open more schools and help more families after disasters and ... well the list goes on. • Now we all got to talk about this on #GivingTuesday, but I want to remind all of you that you can still @PayPal to donate to your favorite charity at paypal.com/giveback. They’re matching donations by 1% through Dec 31. • I’m beyond proud to be partnering with them on this initiative, and grateful that they want me to highlight the way that giving feels so meaningful to me. #SeasonOfGiving #PayItForward #PayPalPartner #ad

Where are the coffee mugs!? “Create a life” photo sessions. Technical advisors. New pages. Rehearsals. Wedding ring selections. Fittings. And more late night pho dinners and day-off dim sum runs than I can count... and EVEN a little hockey!? And holy shit. In the middle of the night ... we WRAPPED. Hands down the greatest job I’ve ever had. The most incredible working experience of my life thus far... and isn’t that the point of it all!? To always be growing, moving, pushing ... upward? I will always tell, and have always told, the truth. Even when my voice shakes. • You asking “why now” simply reveals to me that you haven’t been paying attention. “Journalists” who distort the words of women to produce clickbait, who minimize their story by segmenting it and reducing it? Do better. • If you have chosen not to listen to the frank, clear conversations I’ve had on the topic over the last year, that’s on you. Your lack of attention — to me and to ALL of the women who tell their stories into the void — doesn’t mean that we haven’t been screaming all along. • To attempt to have a field day with my life, acting like I don’t have the receipts? *You can swipe right for a selection. • The grace with which I’ve chosen to handle this, the deep learning I’ve done in the wake of my experience (shout out to the magnificent folks at @onsiteworkshops) that I take as sacred, and a responsibility to offer other women? Do not forget that my “titanium spine,” as my sister @hilarieburton calls it, was forged in fire. I am not a woman that you will ever reduce. Not one iota. None of us are. #DoYouGetItNow #MeToo #BurnItDown #TimesUp poem: @nayyirah.waheed

If #CyntoiaBrown’s case makes your blood boil, as it does mine, then you know what to do. • LIGHT UP THE PHONES. Do not let Governor Haslam’s office have one moment of quiet until he does his JOB. • And then, my dear ones, we organize. Until our system criminalizes the perpetrators, rather than the victims. Until our culture listens to victims, rather than re-traumatizing them by spinning their stories into salacious, fragmented headlines. Until our clothing or our circumstances or our mere existence is no longer an excuse for a lack of consent. Until then, we organize and we fucking fight. • #FreeCyntoiaBrown #BillHaslam #BurnItDownSis

Ladies & Gentlemen. We have a problem. • We have a problem when a pedophile who sexually assaulted a 3 year old child & physically assaulted her mother gets 90 days of jail time. • When a college student, caught raping an unconscious woman in an alley, gets only 6 months of jail time but serves 3. For RAPE. Not for, as his father deemed the assault he perpetrated, “20 minutes of action.” How fucking revolting. That a grown man would defend his rapist son with that sentence. • This doesn’t even touch on the former frat president of @bayloruniversity, who was just let off for violently raping, and nearly killing, a female student. He will serve no jail time & not even be registered as a sex offender. • Then we come to #CyntoiaBrown. A child victim of sex trafficking. She was sold — SOLD — to a 43 year old man. Sold as a sex slave. I’ll say it again. SOLD. Modern day slavery & pedophilia intersect in the grossest way in her case and, like other women in her position, she likely would have died in captivity. But Cyntoia, at just 16 yrs old, fought back. She shot the man who purchased her when he tried to rape her. We have to STOP saying “when he attempted to have sex with her.” A 43 year old man PURCHASED a human being — a 16 year old girl — & tried to RAPE her. She was not, as she was labeled in court, “a child prostitute.” There is literally no such thing. She was a minor. She was a victim of SEX TRAFFICKING. And she, in the fashion the #2A folks looooove to praise, fought back. “A good kid with a gun.” She shot her rapist in self-defense. He died. Good riddance. And she — THE VICTIM — was convicted of MURDER & sentenced to LIFE in prison. She will not be eligible for parole for 51 years. • This is WRONG. The way we talk about victims vs criminals is WRONG. It has to stop. No more “what was she wearing,” or “why did she go to the party,” or she was “an underage sex worker.” No more she “claimed.” Start saying “she recounted.” No more “why ruin his future for 20 minute

The words I’ve been searching for, of course found thanks to @cleowade ・・・ #Repost @cleowade As defined by The United Nations: “Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Everyone is entitled to these rights, without discrimination.” The human beings legally seeking asylum at our border are human beings. Their bones break the same way our children’s bones break. Their blood bleeds red the way ours does. Their eyes cry salty tears like ours. Every single human being deserves respect, dignity, compassion, empathy, and safety. It is very dangerous when we live in a headspace and heart-space that does not acknowledge these divine truths. I love you. I love them. Let us all love our neighbors.

#Repost @humanrightscampaign. Today is a time to reflect and recommit to ending the epidemic of anti-trans violence. Heartbreakingly, 2018 has seen at least 22 trans people killed by violent means -- the majority of whom were Black trans women. We say “at least” because some victims’ deaths may go unreported, while others may not be identified as trans in the media, often because authorities, journalists and/or family members refuse to acknowledge their gender identity. Using correct identifiers and pronouns isn’t just about accuracy–it’s about affording all individuals the respect and dignity that everyone deserves. @HRC Foundation offers a guide for reporters covering trans, non-binary & gender-expansive people. Across the US anti-transgender stigma & systemic discrimination heighten the vulnerability of trans people from an early age. For trans women of color, who comprise the vast majority of victims, these challenges are further exacerbated by & intertwined with racism & sexism. n order to end anti-transgender violence, we must acknowledge the true identities of its victims and address the ways in which societal attitudes regarding these identities may have played a role in their deaths. Even in the face of physical danger, hatred & discrimination—sometimes ruthlessly endorsed and enforced by those at the highest level of our government—transgender Americans live courageously & overcome unjust barriers in all corners of our country. Until we as a country address & dismantle these barriers, transgender people will continue to face higher rates of discrimination, poverty, homelessness & violence. We must honor these victims' truth & bravery with action. #TDOR #TransDayOfRemembrance 2/2

Eight days ago I was in Chicago, preparing to speak at #TogetherLive, and I went to grab lunch at one of my favorite haunts with one of my favorite pals. • As I was leaving, an employee of the restaurant hurried up behind me. This waiter had such a great face. A glow. Short brown hair poking out from under a beanie. Bright eyes. And their voice caught in their throat as they spoke, “hey, I just had to say ... thank you for what you do on social media. Not a lot of people with platforms like yours talk about the things you talk about. You don’t shy away from anything, and the way you support people really means a lot.” The earnestness on their face hit me square in the chest. I said, “thank you so much, that really means a lot,” and they said, “thank YOU. I’m trans. And not a lot of people advocate for us. So just, thank you so much.” And suddenly I had a lump in my throat. • When I tell you that I could FEEL the mix of pain at being othered, and gratitude for being seen, radiating from this person’s body, I am not exaggerating. I wrapped them up in a hug, and we stood in the foyer of a diner, both of us teary-eyed. Both of us feeling affirmed for choosing to be people who talk about hard things. I will never forget you, Ryder. What a supreme honor I’m given, being a person who can support you. • We live in a world where being inclusive is not enough. We must be firmly anti-discrimination. Practices that harm folks like my new friend? Excuses for bigotry passed off as “faith?” Hatred? Hate crimes? Abuse? These things have real tolls. And they come at a human cost. We have to do the work to dismantle any system that makes anyone afraid to be who they are. Period. • Today is #TransDayOfRemembrance And in my next post I want to share some words and facts from the @humanrightscampaign with you. 1/2

You all know how much I love data, and some of the most telling, for me, centers around the gender wage gap. We talked about this on #EqualPayDay, but we need to work to highlight the truth far more often than just one day a year. • So. Stats? On average, women in the U.S. are paid 20% less than men. And that disparity is even greater for women of color. Black women make 64 cents for every dollar made by a man. Latinas make 54 cents on the dollar. So that means those women are paid 38% and 46% less than white men, respectively. • We are past the time to put an end to this. And to do that, we have to keep awareness up and pressure on! I’m thrilled to be teaming up with @abbywambach, @whododatlikedat, @swincash, @cattsadler, and @SecretDeodorant for its latest campaign, #IdRatherGetPaid. Together, we are shedding light on the wage gap. • Check out my Stories for more! There’s singing, dancing, and some figurative ceiling smashing!! @SecretDeodorant #IdRatherGetPaid #Secret #Ad

California. My home. My heart. The devastation continues from both the #CampFire and the #WoolseyFire. 60 people have been confirmed dead. 1,000 are missing. Animals are dead, more are suffering. People with nothing, and people with seemingly all the things, have all lost everything. It is unimaginable. I cannot look at these photos without weeping. • Our state’s magic comes from nature. The land. The sea. The tiny communities of farmers and glass blowers. The enormous cities full of diverse food and innovation. The quiet forests where we all go to feel at one with the planet. • If you’ve experienced the sacred, in our ocean or on our wooded forest trails, please look at the last two slides in this post and see how you might be able to contribute. Every little bit helps. • Thank you to the courageous firefighters and rescue workers, pushing through exhaustion and trauma to save our neighbors. You are heroes. • And lastly, we cannot continue to deny science. Climate change is making these disasters exponentially worse every year. It has NEVER been like this. And we must do something before it gets, unimaginably, worse in years to come. This planet is the only one we’ve got. We must start to treat her that way. ♥️💔♥️

Sometimes when things feel overwhelming, I think about gratitude. And feeling thankful brings me to a pretty rad #fbf. • On 11/4 I got to present the inimitable #BradBird with the Hollywood Animation Award at the HFA’s. It’s a pretty crazy thing being part of the animated film that had the biggest opening of all time. How does one quantify it? Qualify it? To see people watching it on planes, and dressing up as characters from the film — mine included! — billboards in other languages, and people showing up all over the world to watch our superheroes kick some ass while they fight for a society that doesn’t “other” anyone. A society that recognizes everyone’s unique gifts as superpowers. Yeah ... I want to go to there. • It was pretty awesome to be the person asked to present this award to Brad. The little voice in the back of my head said, “me??” To represent our cast? To give the speech? Impostor syndrome never goes away, y’all. Even when you open a movie like this one. So you have to shut it down and say, “yeah, me!” I got to talk about art as a place of belonging, and representation. As the place where we all get to go for the lessons and the laughter. I feel so privileged to get to do what I love at such a level. To get to tell stories that make people feel seen. • To all my #Voyd’s out there? I see you. You matter so much to me. This super suit’s for you! ✋🏼🕳💥 • #supersuit @ecduzit + @alc_ltd, super-pumps @louboutinworld, super cute lil’ bag @adeam, super-eyes @amberdmakeup, and that super-slick hair @chadwoodhair #Incredibles2

To @abbywambach for making our audience our Wolfpack. To @cameronesposito for the laughter and the truth. To @priyaparker for inviting us in. To raise our hands and get on our feet. To @milckmusic for the anthem and the honesty. To @reesewitherspoon for taking the empire you’ve built, and intentionally holding the door open for the rest of us to join you in the room where it happens. • To my #Chicago sisterhood for coming, and supporting, and cheering from the crowd. I could see your faces all night while I was up there, and your love is the greatest fuel and gift. • I cannot wait to bring this show to #Minneapolis tonight. And I get to do it with two of my favorite humans, @wakingupwithryan and @maythaalhassen. Heart swoon. See you soon.

I posted this sentiment on Twitter yesterday, but finally dug up the photos I wanted to share for #VeteransDay. • I’ve been lucky enough to sit with our courageous servicemen & women, whether on @the_USO tour stops — pictured here on our #RamsteinAirForceBase stop in 2009 with dear hearts @miloanthonyventimiglia and @austinnichols — the #WoundedWarriors center, #WalterReed visits in our nation’s capitol, or our time on #OTH throwing a giant concert for all stationed at a base in NC. There will never be enough ways to say thank you for your service. • Knowing these men & women, I simply cannot stay silent — on this day especially — about the despicable way Trump is treating our military. From refusing to visit Aisne-Marne, in France to honor the Marines 243rd year, to skipping Arlington National Cemetery today. • @mikel_jollett pointed out that the President, making up lies about election fraud, “is currently trying to make sure that legal military ballots cast by soldiers serving overseas ARE NOT COUNTED in Florida. He's doing this on VETERAN'S DAY.” Soldiers’ ballots can be received up to 10 days after the election, & counted, per state law. • As an election stunt having to do with a caravan that’s nowhere near us & has since ceased to be mentioned by POTUS (again, stunt) our troops were deployed to our own border for no national security reason. @brianschatz points out that this “is one of the biggest scandals of this Presidency. These dedicated, skilled, highly trained men & women will likely miss Thanksgiving w family, are near American cities but eating MREs.” That means no hot food. And for no reason. These troops are being housed in tents that have no electricity or air conditioning & many are suffering heat exhaustion, according to news reports. • This goes so far past party. This is about decency, and honoring those who serve for us. Even if you’re a down ballot red Rep. voter — like some of my dearest family who I love despite our disagreements — this shou

Dear Donald. You spit on the graves of the dead, and criticize in the face of catastrophic disaster. You’re a liar. A snake. A poor excuse for a human, let alone a leader. Our state is ravaged. The stench in the air is inexplicable. And you’re too busy protecting your hair from the rain in France to honor the Marine’s 243rd birthday as planned. Instead you sit in a hotel room, eating room service no doubt, on the dime of U.S. taxpayers, and tweet insults at the REAL servicemen and women fighting these fires. Fires whose protection services YOU defunded. NOT OUR STATE. YOU. At the federal level because you wanted to get back at a state that voted against you. I do not exaggerate when I say that I loathe you, “sir.” From this Californian, may I send you a sincere and rage-filled, “FUCK YOU.” I hope your hair gets soaked tomorrow, you loser. • @tedlieu, you sir, are a gem. Thank you for refusing to tolerate this utter bullshit.

This is what democracy looks like! And we are just getting started. • I know that we had some tough defeats yesterday. But we had so many great wins! For justice! Healthcare! Representation! Y’all. This is just the beginning. This is the start of restoring checks and balances. Women are going to lead us. And very specifically women of color. Black women, Latinx women, Muslim women, and Native American women have all won incredible victories! • We are celebrating Colorado electing the first openly gay governor, Jared Polis. And Key West, Florida elected its first lesbian openly lesbian mayor in the state. Former commissioner Teri Johnston! These are fantastic wins for the LGBTQ community, as is the #YesOn3 victory in Massachusetts. It’s an anti-discrimination ballot measure that explicitly protects “transgender people from discrimination in public spaces like restaurants, hotels and hospitals.” The Trevor Project called this a campaign “for fighting to protect the basic rights of transgender individuals across the state.” • Voting rights won major victories with Laura Kelly defeating notorious vote-suppressor Kris Kobach in Kansas. And Florida passed Amendment 4, restoring voting rights to over 1.4 million Floridians, who were being denied this right because of prior felony convictions, despite having paid their debt to society! This is major. • In Virginia, gun sense advocates won a major victory, unseating NRA darling Republican Barbara Comstock, who lost her race to Democrat Jennifer Wexton. This is what the tireless advocacy of groups like @momsdemand is capable of! • Both @laurenaunderwood and @ocasio2018 won incredible victories for young women! Underwood is the youngest black woman running for Congress this year, and Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest women ever elected to Congress! • In Wisconsin, Tony Evers won a major victory for public education when he unseated Scott Walker, who routinely attacked public schools and their teachers. • There is more work to be

OKAY TEAM! Soooo many folks are asking me how to make sense of the ballots in their area. THIS IS HOW! • VoteSaveAmerica.com • #VoteSaveAmerica put together this awesome, easy to use guide to help you walk into the voting booth feeling confident that you know where you stand on candidates and initiatives!! • Here’s how it works: go to the site, type in your address, and BAM! You’ll get the run down on everything you need to know. Who's running to represent you. Which measures YOU can help decide. The list goes on! • Y’ALL! These ballot initiatives are beyond important. They’re what truly allow us to make decisions about real, concrete issues in our communities. Like what? Well, things like who gets tax breaks and why, how we take care of our veterans, and what the requirements should to be for casting a ballot in the first place. Yeah. THIS election year, millions of Americans can cast a vote to help ensure more Americans get to cast their votes. We get to protect the Constitution. That’s badass. • These initiatives are often written in really confusing language, so this site will help clarify ALL of it! That way you can make your decisions and walk into the voting booth informed and EXCITED! Being a voter is key, and being an INFORMED voter is easier than ever! So head to votesaveamerica.com/ballot and start being a superhero of civic engagement in your community ♥️✌🏼#GOTV #IAmAVoter @iamavoter

Back in May, I posted these photos after visiting the archival library at the New York Historical Society. Being there took my breath away. And being lucky enough to touch a copy of The North Star, published by Frederick Douglass, gave me the chills. Today, @shaunking announced that he is bringing back #TheNorthStar. • Shaun wrote, “In 1847, with slavery still in full force, 2 brave men, Frederick Douglass and Martin Delany started an abolitionist newspaper called The North Star — named for the star, Polaris, that was often used as a guide for those seeking freedom in the North. Douglass and Delany knew then, as we know now, that in order to fight back against injustice, their stories had to not only be well told — with the color & dimension & nuance that was frequently missing elsewhere, they knew they needed a newspaper that represented the cause of liberation with urgency, clarity, heart, & soul. We need that right now. This past week proved that to me. And we’re going to build it together.” • Kenneth B Morris, Jr., great great grandson of Frederick Douglass and president of Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives, said “Frederick Douglass was a radical reformer. He published The North Star to give enslaved ppl a voice and to hold a hypocritical Christian nation accountable for the atrocities committed on its blood-drenched soil. We have to tell our own stories. I just joined the team. Won’t you?” • Won’t you? 1) Follow think LINK IN BIO son @shaunking’s page, or visit BuildingTheNorthStar.com. 2) Invite two friends to join you. 3) SHARE on your socials, and call your communities to stand up and show up. • Douglass said it best. “Right is of no sex — Truth is of no color — And ALL we are brethren.” Let’s all show up and do the work. Let’s build it. #BuildTheNorthStar #FrederickDouglass 📷: 1) image taken by me, at the New York Historical Society 2) illustrated graphic by @nikkolas_smith 3) same as # 1.

In the wake of tragedy, art has the power to uplift. To explore. And to heal. I could not be more proud, in a time that requires thoughtful and tender investigation, to be one of the producers of this truly beautiful film. A Girl Named C is a new documentary directed by filmmaker Emily Kassie. The film explores art and trauma in the wake of childhood sexual abuse, through the story of C. In the midst of the #metoo movement, A Girl Named C personalizes the awful reality of 1 in 4 girls, and challenges us to see and experience its effects through the eyes of a child. I hope that this film touches your heart. I know it will facilitate the kinds of conversations we need to be having. #AGirlNamedC @agirlnamedcfilm

I was struggling to find the words, so I borrowed these two images (swipe left) from sister @glennondoyle. • As for me, I’ve been ... I have spent all day trying to find the words — the right ones — for the events of this week ... Kentucky mere days ago. Bombs sent to the homes of human beings. Pittsburgh this morning. The illusion of “us and them” is killing us. Quite literally. The lie. What I know to be true is that supremacist ideology is a cancer. And what I also know to be true? Real love is ferocious and fierce. Real love says no. And to this kind of hate, I find myself growling “no.” I don’t know what the answer is. I know that it has to do with waking up. With seeing the divine in each every single person before us, and taking that as FACT. Today I’m holding my loved ones close. Today I am holding even more space in my heart for people’s pain and for people’s value. I know we have so much work to do. To undo the sociopathy of our fragmented society. We have to organize and vote and reach across lines and shed light on truth and ALL of it, I know. But for now I’m just holding, holding, holding onto love. I’m making ferocious, mama bear, lioness love my damn mantra and my war cry. This is so awful. This is unimaginable. All of it. And I know we can do the hard work of beginning to suture these wounds. Because I know how damn strong we are and how ferocious our love is. • I love you. All of you. Be good to each other. ♥️

These incredible boys. These incredible leaders. These awe-inspiring activists. Last night I was both honored & humbled to hold space for three of the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglass in Parkland, FL. We spoke before an audience of close to 1,000 in Seattle, WA. • These young men are poised, wise, brilliant, & honest. They shine, vulnerably. They don’t hide the struggle. Yet they find moments of humor. The pain does not, for one minute, slow their determined energy. They have a wellspring of purpose. They know that this movement is greater than any one of them. They use their platform to highlight their story, but also the stories of other survivors of, and communities affected by, gun violence who have not had the twisted fortune of capturing national media attention. • They dispel falsehood quickly. Crisis actors? Nope. Just kids who’ve been studying civics & producing their school news for years. So they know how it works & put their education to good use. Too media savvy? No these kids grew up with social media, so of course they know how to clapback and meme. They’re good at it. As for those who claim they’re “anti-gun?” Nope. And they’re firm on this. David said to me last night, “no one who instituted drivers licenses, speed limits, seatbelts, or stoplights was anti-car. They were anti people dying in cars. We aren’t anti-gun. We’re anti people dying who don’t have to, from guns. Safety laws & common sense practices exist for the sole purpose of increasing safety.” Um. Yes!! • Throughout our talk, each of them demystified so many things we’ve been taught, or that we seem to feel, with incredible amounts of research (collected over more than 100 years). These kids have become EXPERTS because they have no other choice. They’ve taken their pain and turned it into action. • Jammal looked at the crowd last night, and distilled it in a perfectly gutting & simultaneously inspiring sentence. “Don’t wait to see your best friend in a casket to get active in your

MOOD ✊🏽 #MondayMantra #MakeYourVoiceHeard • Some Monday facts about why voting these morons out matters so much: • The President is lying that he’ll “talk to people” about pre-existing conditions. The GOP has voted over & over again to gut pre-existing conditions, and they have actually gone so far as to bring A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE GOV’T to end them. No matter what they say in their new TV ads. This is a fact. • The economy is NOT “up.” Economists are warning that we are careeening toward a recession. The deficit is enormous b/c of the billionaire break tax plan - 83% of Americans wages are only up an average of 0.07% - Compared to the consumer price index, up 2.9% (highest jump in 10yrs) - Gas up 29.8% - Food up 3.6% - Healthcare up 2.4% - Rent up 3.5% - Transportation up 3.9% The cost of living is rising for Americans and the President is lying about it. Period. Because it’s his fault. Bad economic policy = danger. Most Americans don’t have $500 on hand in case of an emergency. Rising costs mean people will be unable to handle ANY unexpected issue that comes their way. Healthcare issue, for example? People will die. Think I’m exaggerating? (hint: I’m not) Two weeks ago a man in his early 20’s died because he was forced to ration his newly-unaffordable insulin. As healthcare costs rise, more tragedies like that WILL happen. • The President and his son-in-law are actively participating in the cover up of the brutal murder of a journalist in Saudi Arabia. Why? Well he’s in deep with them financially. This is why tax returns matters. This is why we should refuse to elect anyone who violates the emoluments clause. They are OWNED. And making the world less safe. WHILE lining their pockets. Let’s not forget that crucial detail. • This list goes on... But I’m not looking to depress y’all. We have to be emboldened to ACT! We can change this!! Don’t be fooled. They’re trying to shout “look over here!!!” while they’ve set a massive dumpster fire in the opposite direction. Do

We celebrated the inimitable @egreener. We set some intentions and threw them (figuratively not literally, because litter sucks!) into the ocean. HBD my soul sister! ♥️👯🦄 • *I’d also like to clarify that no rioting happened in the making of this picture. Guys. I posted the following as a #MondayMantra in November of 2014. Over the last week I’ve traveled all across the country and spoken in front of some amazing audiences. With @mitchalbom in Detroit. At @northwesternu in Illinois. At the @harvardiop w/ fellow activists & students. Tonight I’ll be in Seattle w/ some incredible students from @marchforourlives. • All of these conversations revolve around unity. Around humanity. Around caring for one another and voting like we mean it. About how we can stop buying into the hype from media and politicians who are bought and paid for, and how we can take back our lives + drive forward progress in our country, and, most importantly, truly carry each other’s hearts in our hearts. This felt fitting to circle back to... here we go. ••• 2014: #YourHeartMatters This is a human heart. Researchers are learning that this incredible little machine, the size of a fist, possesses a level of intelligence they are only beginning to understand. "The heart is a sensory organ and acts as a sophisticated information encoding and processing center that enables it to learn, remember, and make independent functional decisions," says a paper from the Institute of HeartMath. Now what FASCINATES me, is the new information we have about the heart's ENERGY. Like the brain, the heart generates a powerful electromagnetic field. The largest in the body, in fact. Studies suggest this field can be detected 8ft outside the body (5ft for the brain). Guys. Your heart radiates energy EIGHT FEET from your body. It literally touches other people. And it does so far more than your brain. Your life force, your love center, your pulse, TOUCHES other people. People you don't even know can feel your heart. People you pass on the street. People in line with you at the grocery store. Someone you smile at walking through the airport. That's so powerful. We are intermingling all the time. You give energy to other people simply by being. Your heart matters. YOU matt

Babes. Yesterday was my sweet sister @ruthielindsey’s birthday. And while I gushed and told her all the things I love about her on a FaceTime, I feel like her ringing in another year in the wholehearted beauty with which she operates deserves to be celebrated all damn weekend! • This woman. Y’all. THIS WOMAN. What an honor it is to walk alongside her in this life. To call her my sissy and my best and my framily. Ruthie has taken pain and tragedy and turned them into luminescence and love. Her heart glows for whatever stands before her. Sunsets. Flowers. Friends. Animals. Did I mention sunsets? She is always the first to point out what’s beauty-full in people, and in the world. She reminds me of what it means to live centered. Watching her evolution over these past years, her hard won triumphs, and her courageous vulnerability has made my heart grow a size. And she has — how lucky am I!? — proved to me that my heart has a safe place to rest. Because of her friendship, and the friendships like this one that exist in our precious community, I have torn down protective walls. Life is so much gentler and easier this way. • And I say all of this to illustrate a point. That this is possible. That real connection and selfless friendship can foster magic. And that having a bestie you share a meat tooth and penchant for real dirty hip hop with doesn’t hurt either. And margaritas. And podcasts. And cheese. We will eat all your snacks and dance all over your house. And we can rarely stop laughing for a photo. You can’t take us anywhere. • Happiest Birthday my sister. Happiness looks damn good on you. ♥️🎉🎈👯✨💋 #SisterSister #HappyBirthdayToYou #SmallAndTall #Framily

Y’all! On Monday I had the supreme pleasure of meeting with Lauren Underwood @laurenaunderwood in Chicago. She’s running for Congress in the 14th district in Illinois and I could not be more inspired by her passion! • She’s a nurse, and thus is fighting for the healthcare of all in Illinois, and beyond. (HELLO she was one of the people tapped to work on the ebola crisis in the Obama administration. She is legit amazing!!) When she found out that her congressman voted to strip protections for those with pre-existing conditions, even AFTER he promised not to, she sprung into action. As a nurse she knows exactly what that kind of coverage loss means for families, and how devastating it would be for both the people and the economy. I am so glad that someone with her knowledge, expertise, and drive is running in my home-away-from-home state! • EARLY VOTING IS ALREADY UNDERWAY IN ILLINOIS, y’all! Please go vote. Please take 5 friends. Every. Single. Vote. Matters!! And a major perk of early voting is avoiding any last minute blizzards, so hey, get out there!! #GOTV #Vote #Chicago #Illinois #laurenunderwoodforcongress • AND if you can canvass for Lauren, please do! Yesterday marked 50 years since @tommiesmith68 and John Carlos raised their fists at the Summer Olympics. The year was 1968. They were standing atop a platform in Mexico City. The gentlemen raised their fists to protest inequality and the horrific treatment of people of color. This was the very definition of peaceful protest. Yet the stadium erupted in jeering and racist slurs, the men were stripped of their medals, and received death threats at home. Much like what we’re seeing today, the backlash was swift, intense, deeply racist, and the feedback centered around the “not this way” rhetoric. • Apparently it’s never the “right” way, the right place, or the right time to take a stand. History often celebrates the protestors and the martyrs decades after their struggles, but in the present their experiences were awful and unjust. This “not this way” notion? That there’s some better way to do the right thing? That’s a lie. Protest makes oppressors uncomfortable. That’s the point. To highlight what those in power do to those they try to keep power from. And this is where we are today. Y’all, it’s up to us to dismantle systems of oppression and also the lies they’re founded on. There is no finite bucket of power. No finite bucket of success. Everyone deserves equal access to life, liberty, and a pursuit of justice. It’s our birthright. And anyone who tells you differently is operating small. They are motivated by scarcity mentality. Let’s not be those people. Let’s be Tommies and Johns. • Last night, as we kicked off @mspackyetti’s study group at the @harvard IOP, we watched a video from Tommie Smith. He asked our class to join him in a third salute to mark this monumental anniversary. To commit to the fight for equity and justice. I was so proud that virtually every student stayed for the photo. For the cause. For a commitment to unity. Y’all are the future. You will change the world. Now do me a favor and prove me right. #Vote like you mean it. #HarvardIOP #HarvardKen

Happy 1st Birthday @detroitblows!!! I am so proud of this business baby of ours, @nialauryn! • A few years ago, a group of gals needed to get our hair done for a friend’s wedding. When we went to a popular service salon, the WOC in our crew were charged extra service fees for “thick hair.” This was despite the fact that one (non WOC) gal had longer/thicker hair than any of the rest of us. Passing friends with wildly curly hair didn’t experience the “texture” upcharge either. We were pissed. And as we learned about how toxic the products are — & thus the polluting footprint is — in most salons, our anger turned into ambition. We decided we would try our hand at changing the industry. We knew we could build a salon that was really a space for women to feel both safe & beautiful. We knew we could create an intersectional community gathering venue where women could commune. We knew we could commit ourselves to non-toxicity standards that align more with Europe than the USA (where beauty product ingredients haven’t been regulated since the 1920s & thus are SCAAAARY!) We knew we could invest — through our own profits — money in other female entrepreneurs in the local area. That’s what #DetroitGrows is all about. And we knew we could invest in a city we love that deserves love in economic support too. And so here we are. • Building a business isn’t easy, y’all. No matter how things look from the outside, it’s crazy hours, tight margins, and a wild learning curve. But our business is now 365 days old! We have plans & goals to expand and to innovate the beauty industry as we do. And we will always stay true to our mission to elevate all women through love & community. • Thank you all for taking this ride with us. To the folks in our local community who show up for blowouts, roller sets, and the rest of our services; for nails, eyelashes and more; who help us pay it forward through #DetroitGrows, thank you. And thank you to our community at large that follows along via our so

Released today, an @amnesty report found that “in 2017 and 2018, the Trump administration appears to have separated approximately 8,000 ’family units’ along the border. Even if half of the people referred to in that figure were parents, the remaining 4,000 children would dwarf the total number of kids commonly reported to have been impacted by the ‘zero tolerance’ campaign — that total tends to hover between 2,500 to 3,000.” • I am horrified and heartbroken by this. And by the people I see denying the humanity of these children. The people who are willing to ‘other’ their fellow man. There is a better way to keep borders strong and vet anyone seeking asylum. We’ve done it for decades. *And before you dare @ me about policies put in place by the last administration, which were set in motion to — and only to — protect children that agents believed might be victims of traffickers, don’t ignore the data that shows the Obama Admin deported more people than any POTUS before him. Not stating that fact because I even agree with it, but rather because if you’re claiming he was “too easy” on immigrants, you’re factually inept and your racism/partisanship is showing. • Our nation needs to get back in touch with both its heart and its ability to think critically. Luckily, my brilliant friend @minkakelly directed this video to help us reconnect with our empathy and our humanity. I am endlessly inspired by her commitment to the cause. • We are 77 days past the deadline for our government to reunite separated families. The fact that they’ve been lying to us, the citizens who pay their salaries, about just how many families have been destroyed by their barbaric choices should enrage all of us. In more than two-thirds of these cases children’s parents were deported without knowing how or even IF they might be reunited with their children. This is a true humanitarian crisis. • Please vote November 6. For these children, for human rights, and for the hope that we can become a better v

Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. For some reason, our culture seems perfectly okay with fitness plans and food regimens and the latest workout craze, but we keep the reality of how much work it takes to be emotionally fit completely hidden. Mental health — and the attention we pay to our own — shouldn’t be buried. It shouldn’t be an afterthought. It takes care and it deserves respect. So, today, I’d like to share a few things that keep me emotionally fit. • • My friends, who welcome all of the deep talks and all speak the same language I do, which’s centered on the truth that vulnerability takes immense courage. • My pal @wakingupwithryan, whose morning practices center my day so beautifully. If you don’t follow him yet, you’re welcome! • My badass therapist, who offers me space to process thoughts and feelings and experiences in real time. I’m a verbal processor, so when I’m out of emotional shape (aka skipping therapy) I fall out of step with myself, and get really good at being “fine,” which isn’t fine at all. • Mediation. I learned TM 13 years ago and I’m better when I’m practicing regularly. No question. A great way to get started is with the app @headspace. • And finally, the most important place I’ve ever spent deep and expansive time focusing on patterns, inherited processes, and trauma. It’s called @onsiteworkshops and it utterly changed my life. My wish is that everyone on earth would have the time and resources to attend OnSite, and delve into whatever curriculum would best benefit their lives. • To everyone out there dedicating practice and attention to their emotional fitness? I see you. I respect the hell out of you. And I’m cheering you on! 🤓💪🏼🧠💭🌻✨♥️ Photo (it’s me!) by @juanazulay + @pandagunda + @maavven

Exactly this. Let’s rage. #Repost @glennondoyle ・・・ ARE YOU READY TO TURN YOUR RAGE INTO CHANGE? Many of you have been waiting for me to share WHAT’S NEXT FOR US as women, as warriors, as citizens. You have no idea how seriously I take that trust and responsibility. It’s not easy for me to ask anything of you. Your lives are hard and exhausting and filled to the brim already. My job, my mission for the past thirteen years has been to SERVE you. In this moment in history, the purest way I can continue to serve you is to ask something of you. To invite you to rise up and unite your voices, bodies, power and say: ENOUGH. Enough systematic and celebrated racism. Enough ignoring and laughing at survivors’ pain. Enough terrified migrant children transported to middle of the desert, in the middle of the night. Enough institutionally enforced wealth for the richest Americans while so many Americans toil in intergenerational poverty. ENOUGH. I believe that THIS, this is the moment in which we each make a decision: We go either back to sleep or stay wide awake. We either give up or give hell. We either lay down and surrender or rise up and fight for each other. We either turn our rage into change, or we let it eat us alive. We’re going to turn our rage into change. For us, and for our children. For everyone’s children. So that one day, when my daughters and son ask how I reacted during these dangerous times, I’ll be able to say: Like this. I’ll be able to point to pictures and tell them stories about the power of sisterhood. I’ll be able to say: Right here, babies. This is how your mama showed up for you. And for her sisters. And for herself. A group of fierce and brilliant women activists (led by women of color) and I have been plotting tirelessly all week. We have a plan. THIS IS HOW WE ARE GOING TO SHOW UP: Every Friday from this Friday, Oct 5, through Nov 23, WE ARE GOING TO TURN OUR RAGE INTO CHANGE through #BlackFridays COME BACK TOMORROW FOR FRIDAY’S ACTI

Today is a big day. My brother @jedidiahjenkins birthed his book today. It’s called To Shake The Sleeping Self and it’s a brilliant, poignant, reflective, emotional, hilarious adventure tale of how a bike trip from Oregon to Patagonia helped a man come home to himself. • Jed is a voice for so many. His words will constantly leave you whispering “me TOO.” You will feel seen because of his fearlessness to examine both himself and the world around him. • I had the honor of being on two parts of Jed’s trip, and the SUPREME honor of finishing his trip with him, in Patagonia. It was so so special. It was there that I got to take the cover photo for this book — I’m a published cover photographer now y’all! With my soul-brother!! How cool is that!? — and when I close my eyes and think about it, I can still feel the rain hitting my face and hear the peals of laughter coming from both of us as we stood atop Torres Del Paine (pic two). • This book just might change your life. It just might reframe how you think about your own capability; about your place in the world. Hint? It’s what you make it. And now you have somewhere (#linkinbio) to turn for inspiration. • Jed, I am so proud of you. Happy Book Born Day!! ✨🖤✨ #ToShakeTheSleepingSelf #JedidiahJenkins • AND OH MY UPDATE!! If you order the audiobook, you get JED reading it to you! How fooking cool is that!? 💥📚💥

Thank you Dr. Ford. Despite terror, lasting trauma, having to put your family in hiding, and death threats, you were brave and you did this for us. For both women and men. For the possibility of a new paradigm where we do not live suspended between the pasts and the futures of abusers. • I have been trying to write my #WhyIDidntReport for a while now. And I still can’t. For me, an added layer of paralyzing pain comes from having reported and from the unbearable retaliation that followed. From the flippant “well thank God he didn’t try to rape you!” response from the first person I told I’d been assaulted. To the fearful silence of every witness, who broke my heart by staying quiet and who my heart breaks for because I know the fear they felt was paralyzing too. And from the fact that I still don’t sleep well. The fact that I struggle to be touched by strangers. To every fan I’ve ever met who has asked permission before hugging me, thank you. Your thoughtful grace means everything to me and my reactive physical body. • Perhaps someday I’ll wake up and feel as courageous as Dr. Ford. Or @busyphilipps. Or any of the beautiful, brave, bold sisters out there who have shared their stories today. And perhaps not. No matter. I am in awe of all of you. I have your back. No matter what happens now, today has changed everything. Forever. As sister @glennondoyle said, “we will become disobedient. Strategically disobedient.” The world had better watch out for us. #BelieveSurvivors

A new day is dawning. #TimesUp #BelieveSurvivors #IStandWithDrFord #Wolfpack • Let’s do some unpacking, fam. If a healthcare company came out with a medication that could cure cancer 97%-98% of the time, it would be called a miracle. It’s proven that less than 3% of accusations or rape or assault are false. Meaning between 97% and 98% of women who report the most awful thing that’s ever happened to them are telling the truth. The awful truth. Fact. Period. So ... Why don’t we believe what would — if this were about the proof of a medication, or any “thing,” rather than of human beings — equate to a 97% success rate? Though there’s no “success” here. Why don’t we as a society believe women? It’s been proven over and over again that we should. We must. 1 in 3 women will be assaulted or raped in her lifetime. Anyone who doesn’t want to acknowledge this fact isn’t changing it. Sticking your head in the sand or covering your ears won’t change the reality. WE must change it. WE must undo the narrative that says “it was in his past,” or “what about his future?!” The narrative that suspends women in space and time, frozen. Because what about HER past? Her childhood? HER future? How this violation shapes it? Her every waking moment that carries memories and trauma in her body? • We have some healing to do, y’all. As a collective. And it begins with respecting credible women like Dr. Ford. Because what’s more likely? That many years ago she began faking PTSD and carried this performance through her marriage, with her husband, which led them to counseling in 2012 during which she told her husband and her therapist about this assault? Just in case a man she went to school with might potentially be nominated to the Supreme Court a decade later? Or that he did it? And she’s carried it with her every damn day since? #ThinkAboutIt #ICarryItWithMe and if you do too, #ISeeYou #IStandWithYouToo

Dear @IvankaTrump, I figured after the last one of these calls for you to take action, you’d unfollow me. But you’re still following me!! So, let me use this opportunity to call you in. Rather than feeling called out, try to see this as an invitation to merge your words and your actions. Girl. You can do it. • There’s a lot of things happening in your father’s first term that are grotesque. From dismantling the protection of water and air and the EPA in general, to putting kids in cages, and then stealing money from health and human services to pay for more cages for more kids — yeah, more than $200 MILLION from cancer research and AIDS research and mental health services — the list goes on. A lot of it is wrong. But here’s the thing with what’s happening THIS week... • You’ve proclaimed yourself a feminist and a champion of women’s rights. Right now, you have an opportunity to actually fight for women. Use your access to demand that Professor Ford’s request for a full, fair, trauma-informed investigation by the FBI be held. There should be no rush when it comes to confirming a lifetime appointment for a man who’ll judge women until his last days. Why NOT investigate? After all, Dr. Ford WANTS a full investigation. Brett doesn’t. Your Dad doesn’t... but that’s a separate conversation. I’m asking — truly asking — what about you?? As a woman who, if not having experienced assault herself, must have friends who’ve been victims? As 51% of the population don’t we deserve equal protections? Don’t you think, our so-called “sister?” #DearIvanka

Last night, I watched @hadaskleinman sing from her soul. As woman who grew up in a multi-faith family, I often find identity in the spiritual rather than the specific. Last night I was reminded about the purpose of community. Whether religious, atheist, academic, or geographical. Groups who share the energy of the heart heal together. My brother @wakingupwithryan lead us in a prayer. • His words: “Rosh Hashanah is the lunar New Year, & it’s taught that on Rosh Hashanah the gates of heaven open & begin the 10 days of awe. The 10 days when access to a divine plain becomes even more realized. And so, these last ten days may have felt amazing & they may have felt really rocky. Know that the rockiness IS that access to the divine that’s wanting to clear energy for each of us to be actualized. To be living the DNA that’s been with us always. To clear the stuff that’s getting in the way. So if we can take a breath & breathe all that in - that divinity that’s in us - & on the exhale let go of all the resistance? This time is when we talk with God, with the Universe, & we talk with our community & we talk with ourselves & we ask for forgiveness. We recognize that in our humanity we’ve made mistakes & that we release the guilt & judgement that we hold? That we may step into the new year free. I invite you to reflect on the last year & bring to mind beautiful times. The successes. The love. The intimacy. And also bring to mind the difficulties. The health issues of ourselves or our loved ones. The deaths. The upsets. The things that didn’t go our way. What if we can see all those things, now, as whatever our soul has needed to walk the path to finding ourselves? Maybe now we can find some gratitude. However challenging it may be, for the things that happened that hurt us. The things that were said or done that hurt us. Causing them to come to more attention. To our needs. To the people that we seek to become. What if we can release those judgments & those thoughts? Those stori

On Sunday night I had the supreme joy of looking to my left and seeing @hannah_gadsby. Right there! In the same room! I had to tell her what #Nanette meant to me. • Her courage at telling her story knocked the wind out of me when I watched it for the first time. Explaining what, as a comedian, laughter meant to her. But how damaging laughter that comes from reducing oneself, making oneself the butt of a joke before other people can do it to you, does to someone. What sexual assault does to someone. How our pain never leaves us. And how it factors into our legacy is both beyond our control and also squarely up to us. Both, and. • This woman’s @netflix special is a revelation. And a revolution. Hannah, thank you for being so gracious to each of us who had gratitude to share. I’m glad we’re no longer even one degree of @kevinbacon apart. THIS. All of this. #Repost @cindi_leive ・・・ Twenty-seven years ago almost exactly, I sat glued to my TV along with the rest of America and watched Professor Anita Hill deliver searing, credible testimony about sexual harassment in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. It was the first political proceeding I’d paid much attention to, and I was riveted—not just by her calm, poised demeanor but by the way she was dismissed, disregarded and smeared by the powerful senators who grilled her, the pundits who discussed her case on TV and the establishment in general. (The American Spectator famously called this accomplished lawyer “a little bit nutty and a little bit slutty.”) That weekend of hearings is part of what made me a feminist. Right now, as Professor Hill herself writes in @nytimes this morning, we’re in what feels like reruns, as Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh stands accused of assaulting Christine Blasey Ford, now a professor of clinical psychology, when they were both teenagers. We won’t know more about the case and these charges until Professor Ford and Kavanaugh testify Monday—but that hasn’t stopped some Senators from jumping to tired old 1991-style conclusions already. (Senator Orrin Hatch—one of the OG questioners from 1991!—had one phone conversation with Kavanaugh yesterday and told reporters “he’s an honest man” and that Professor Ford must have been “mixed up.” He hadn’t even spoken to her yet!) The message to our Senate must be: DO BETTER. As Professor Hill writes: “In 1991, the phrase ‘they just don’t get it’ became a popular way of describing senators’ reaction to sexual violence. With years of hindsight, mounds of evidence of the…harm that sexual violence causes…as well as a Senate with more women than ever, ‘not getting it’ isn’t an option for our elected representatives. In 2018, our senators must get it right.” Or get out. Please, America: Show us you’ve evolved. 📷: Greg Gibson/AP

Call your Senators #BlockBrett 202-224-3121. • To quote @duca.lauren ”It seems to me that when Brett Kavanaugh attempted to deny a 17-year-old immigrant an abortion, he believed that the decisions you make as a minor ought to have lifelong consequences. Let's treat him the same way.” YUP. • And. As pointed out by many activists I respect today... Anyone who thinks a powerful (white) man “was just a kid” when established his pattern of desire to control women — ie. his stance on EVERYTHING having to do with our bodies including birth control. Brett? It’s NOT an “abortion inducing medication” as you stated in your SCOTUS testimony. Science. Medicine. Try it. — but a young (black) boy shot and killed at 17 (Trayvon) or 12 (Tamir) was a “thug who got what he deserved?” Nope. No. Your double standard is showing. • There are PLENTY of qualified judges out there who don’t have a lifelong pattern of dominating women. Like who? Like Merrick Garland, for example. Just sayin’. #StopKavanaugh 📷 @mspackyetti & @michaelskolnik • UPDATE. Turning the comments off. Today was a good day. It’s an honor and mission to support the National @womenshistory Museum organization and effort! • Did you know that according to the International Association of Women’s Museums there is no comprehensive museum anywhere in the U.S. solely dedicated to women’s history?? • According to the Architect of the Capitol, of the 100 statues in the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall Collection, only 9 are women. • On average, only 14 percent of the figures in U.S. history textbooks are women, and most of those are relegated to sidebars. (And that % may go down AHEM Texas I’m looking at you for deciding to REMOVE Hellen Keller and Hilary Clinton from your school books. Erasing the legacies of women who’ve shaped this country is wrong. TX sisters please stand up!) • Of the 5,575 outdoor sculpture portraits of historical figures in the United States, 559 portray women, a mere 10% of all statues, according to the Smithsonian American Art Museum's online inventories catalog. • Our stories deserve to be told. Fully. Complexly. And authentically. We deserve that representation. We may be 51% of the world’s population, but when we’re not represented we have no examples. If we can’t see it, we won’t know how to BE it. • It was so special to watch my pals @gabunion, @kristenanniebell, and @osopepatrisse be honored today. And the icon Kathy Bates!! It made me pinch myself that I received an award at this lunch a few years ago. What an amazing group of women to find myself among... What an honor. #sheroes #WomensHistoryMuseum ALSO @iamavoter #IAmAVoter #DontYouWannaBeAVoterToo

Mood AF @iamavoter • New York! You have an election today! All the info is in my stories. GET OUT AND VOTE! • And if you believe in subways that work, healthcare, public schools, women who work for the people, campaign finance reform, legalizing marijuana (to make that tax money and pay for those schools, as a serious racial justice issue, and more) and rent control — I used to pay rent in NY and that issue is no joke — for the people!? Well then I’m sure you love @cynthiaenixon for NY just like I do! @zephyrteachout too! But no matter WHAT your most important issues are (though I can’t imagine anyone who hates that badass list) go vote! ✌🏼♥️✔️ #IHeartNY #PartTimeResident #FullTimeLove

This is a lie. A downright lie. It flies in the face of medicine and science. And it’s a clue as to the danger Kavanaugh would pose to all women and all families — even those who are firmly anti-choice. Birth control is healthcare. For women AND men (because hello who do you think gets women pregnant!?) This is dangerous. Just as Kavanaugh and his cronies hope to gut Roe, they also hope to dismantle coverage for birth control. If couples cannot plan their families, it’s women who lose all autonomy. Stop this madness. Light up the phones. Do not stop. Flood the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. #WeAreNotGoingBack #StopKavanaugh #NowDoYouGetTheHandmaidsOutfits #NotAnExaggeration

We are not meant to be boxed in. To be labeled. To be defined by the outside world so that it may feel more comfortable when it looks at us. So that it feels like it has us figured out. We are multifaceted. We are MANY things. • Me? I’m a daughter. A friend. A feminist. A seeker of truth and a warrior for justice. A dog-snuggler. A belly-laugher. A giver of hugs. A TV binge-watcher. A global citizen. A goofball. A serious soul. And an empath. And I firmly believe that empathy is a superpower. #IAMMANY • And lastly, I am honored to be one of the women that my friend @rebeccaminkoff chose to remind myself and my sisterhood that molds were made to be broken. John McCain’s words ... I can’t help but cry. "The world is a fine place and worth the fighting for and I hate very much to leave it...I hate to leave it. But I don’t have a complaint. Not one. It’s been quite a ride. I’ve known great passions, seen amazing wonders, fought in a war, and helped make a peace. I’ve lived very well and I’ve been deprived of all comforts. I’ve been as lonely as a person can be and I‘ve enjoyed the company of heroes. I’ve suffered the deepest despair and experienced the highest exultation. I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times... The bell tolls for me. I knew it would. So I tried, as best I could, to stay a 'part of the main.' I hope those who mourn my passing, and even those who don’t, will celebrate as I celebrate a happy life lived in imperfect service to a country made of ideals, whose continued service is the hope of the world. And I wish all of you great adventures, good company, and lives as lucky as mine." ・・・ Let his life and legacy be a reminder that many of us have differing opinions, different points of view, but at the end of the day we must support one another and work together. McCain defended Obama against racism, voted to save the ACA because he knew the American people deserved healthcare protection as a personification of life, liberty, and justice for all, and he stood firm against impending tyranny. Both in his storied military service, and in our current administration. We may have had differing opinions on some things, but dammit I respected this man. I learned from this man. And I’m so sad to hear of his passing. Sending love to his family. #JohnMcCain #RIP

Nature is my sacred place. It’s the place my lungs and my heart open up. Where my mind gets still and I process my life. It’s the place that makes me understand my favorite poetry more deeply, that renews my feeling of purpose, and that makes me certain that everything is going to be okay in the end. A few days in nature reset everything. I am reminded of magic. I know what beauty is. Truly. • This past week I had a little escape with some of my nearest and dearest. Some of you may remember that last year I got to travel to Alaska with my pals @eddiebauer to talk about conservation, and why we absolutely must take care of our Mother Earth 🌎. This was a reunion. Not a work trip — though helping bring attention to conservation efforts feels more like purpose than “work” to me — but a first of many annual framily reunion adventures. That’s what can happen when you invest in and prioritize goodness for a job. You make friends for life. Friends who will travel to far away places with patchy Wi-Fi at high altitudes and hike with you until you feel like you’re going to pass out from the joy and the lack of oxygen. Friends who will stay up all night drinking whiskey and playing games, waiting for meteor showers to burst through the sky and for the power to come back on. Friends who will put on waders to fly fish, hop in hot springs, and befriend wild horses with you. Friends who will celebrate your highs and hold you through your lows. • The lesson here is the truth behind that @mumfordandsons song ... “where you invest your love, you invest your life.” So my friends, I suggest investing love in good people who love the planet and its forests and streams as much as you do. It’ll enrich your life in ways you can’t even imagine. And this, this dear ones, is #WhyIHike. Want to join? Check out slide 10 and turn your sound on 💚 • #framily #reunion #notanad #justacelebration 📷 by brother bear @coryt

Yesterday was #BlackWomensEqualPayDay. We must all acknowledge the compounding hurdles women face. While women’s equal pay day happens in April, highlighting the pay disparity caused by gender, women of color face gaps caused by both gender and race. Learn. Acknowledge. Support. Apologies for being a day late on this, fam. • Below is a section from a @voxdotcom article on the wage gap. I highly suggest reading it — ESPECIALLY if you’re going to be one of the ignorant fools who wants to jump in my comments to say pay gaps don’t exist. I hope that if you’re one of those willfully ignorant dodos, your moms smack you. • VOX: “Tuesday, August 7, is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, which marks how long a black woman has to work into 2018 to catch up to the same amount a white man made in 2017. . The day is months later than National Equal Pay Day, which marks the same thing for women generally. This year, #EqualPayDay was on April 10, meaning that for women overall, it takes 16 mos to match what white men make in 12. . But these numbers change considerably for women of color. Black women, for example, needed 20mo to reach equal pay. Native American women will hit equal pay on September 27, while Latinas will hit the benchmark on November 1. And while Asian-American women technically hit the equal pay mark on February 22, suggesting that this group faces the smallest gender pay gap of all women, that date overlooks significant disparities in pay among different groups of Asian women. . Attention to pay disparities has highlighted how black and Hispanic men make less than their white counterparts, & how women overall make less than men. But there has been a failure to fully grapple with what the pay gap looks like when both race & gender are taken into account. For example, even as white women lag behind white men in wages, they often do better than black or Hispanic men. . And these numbers have particularly overlooked women of color who face both racial & gender discriminatio

As many of us throwback on Thursdays, I think it’s important to use the trend to also take pause. To remember. To not let our less than sunshine-filled memories fade. To honor those who we must fight for, even after we’ve lost them. 10 days ago I wrote at length about #NiaWilson. About double standards. And about racism. And I will continue to #SayHerName. I will continue to do my best to ally. I will continue to stand for all of my sisters affected by violence, and acknowledge those who are affected disproportionately. My friends @ohyeswewill nailed it, and said exactly what I woke up feeling today. So I’ll #repost their words for you now... ・・・ The death of Nia Wilson has affected all of us. We can't stop thinking about her—the violent and unjust way she was murdered, the words her sister Letifah Wilson said to her before she passed on a BART platform in Oakland ("We're gonna get through this. I got you, you're my baby sister,"), and her young life and immense future taken senselessly. We, as women, need to stand up and acknowledge this tragic event and call attention to it. We need to talk about it LOUDLY. Do you have something to say? Are you angry, scared, devastated, and wanting to stand up against misogyny and more specifically racial misogyny? VOICE IT. Start by reading @mspackyetti's informative, call-for-action article for @thecut, #SpendYourPrivilege . Per a study done by Washington University last year, black women are more likely than any other demographic to have been unarmed when killed by police officers. Per the C.D.C., black women die by homicide at nearly three times the rate that white women do. All of us have experienced fear as women—but ask yourself, if you are white, have you ever put yourself in the shoes of someone of color? That fear is amplified. We need to #SayHerName over and over again. We need to stand up together in all of our communities and put an end to racial misogyny and the brutality against women. To quote Brittany Packnett f

And my other #wcw is Duchess Milan, who I have not yet met but I want to learn all the things from... “My mother said when you die, you stand there before the light and you say, ‘Was I worthy of myself to know that I have liked me?’ Okay? I like me. Okay? And I tell the whole chorus, honey, ‘I like me.’ I don’t hurt anybody, I don’t do anybody wrong, you know. I’ve dealt with everything I can, as much as I can. So just find that inside yourself and take time with that person. Faults, flaws, wishes, all of it, it doesn’t matter. We’re not going to get it all. None of us gets it all. Okay? But what we do have, we can polish. We can polish it, honey, til it blinds them.” — #DuchessMilan, 69 and carrying the sacred feminine wisdom of lifetimes upon lifetimes. Turns out someday was yesterday. And it was reeeeeeal fun @jameslafferty @stephencolletti @antwontanner2214 • Twon and I were the last guests on James and Stephen’s FB Live Chat for #EveryoneIsDoingGreat. Watching an old OTH episode from Season Four was HILARIOUS! And we raised a whole bunch of money for the #EDG IndieGoGo campaign in the process thanks to the #OTHfam. If you haven’t contributed yet, the link is in my bio! Let’s get these boys shooting this show already! • #BrotherBears #Framily #NameThatReference #HoneyGrove #Gang

Facts about the kids. We all need to raise our voices. And while we’re at it, vote @riseupandvote #Repost @mandanadayani ・・・ Children led a sit in at Capitol Hill to protest family separation at the border. Today is the deadline to reunite 2,551 children who were taken from their families, but the Trump administration says only about 1,600 are "eligible" for reunification. The government has already deported 463 parents. Based on court filings, huge numbers of these parents claim they were either promised to be re-united with their kid or coerced into signing their own expedited removal papers in hopes of getting kids back. ▪️ 2,551: children separated from their parents. ▪️ 1,012: children who have been reunited. ▪️ 37: children whose parents haven’t been identified. ▪️ 914: parents not "eligible" for reunification. ▪️ 463: parents who may have been deported without their children. - stats via @ajplus & @fwdus - #familiesbelongtogether #endfamilyseparation #thisisabouthumanity Shout out to a few of the incredible organizers @paolamendoza @jesslivmo @aijenp @tonykchoi @ginnysuss @thebeckymorrison Please share about today’s deadline. #tbt to a hopeful day. This wonderful crew rallied to help two wonderful humans, Nicole and PJ, rebuild their #Ojai property after it was devastated by the California wildfires. We spent the day hauling ash and debris, planting and potting a garden, landscaping, and installing a new sanctuary where they could rest and begin to plan the larger task of rebuilding their physical home. These two lost everything, and were living in a small RV that was parked where their house once stood. It was heartbreaking and painful. But their resilience and commitment to starting anew was incredibly inspiring. Spending a day with them reminded me of the adage, “don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.” Why, you ask? Because we would have loved to actually rebuild their physical home, but time, budget, and insurance claim procedures/constraints prevented that. It would’ve been easy to say “oh well we can’t yet, it sucks,” and give up. BUT. There was still GOOD to be done. 20 of us, thanks to @seb100things, could still help make a change that these two couldn’t on their own. With trowels and shovels and rakes and hands and sweat and laughter and some tears too, we cleared away the devastation and gave them their garden back. And that was damn good. Do what you can, when you can, y’all. It might just change someone’s life. Even if you can’t do it all. Do something. Let it be enough. 🌱♥️🌱 And let’s also use this tragedy as a reminder that #science matters, #climatechange is real, and the escalating devastation caused by wildfires on an ever-warming planet is our responsibility. Demand that your elected officials take it seriously. We have work to do to preserve this planet for our children and our children’s children. Let’s make sure their gardens can grow.

Say her name. #NiaWilson She was 18. Heading home from a family gathering with her sister. Standing on an #Oakland train platform. She could’ve been you. She could’ve been me. She is us. Violence against women is a societal issue that is all of ours. And violence against women of color needs to be called out by ALL of us. Nia Wilson was murdered by a white supremacist on parole. John Lee Cowell. A man who singled out two women of color & slashed their throats in a stabbing that BART Police Chief Carlos Rojas deemed a “prison-style attack” that was among “the most vicious” he had ever seen in 30 years of policing. Her sister Letifah survived, cradling Nia in her arms & says she looked back at Cowell & “he was wiping off his knife & stood at the stairs. Just looked ... he just stood there, like it was nothing.” The next day he was apprehended on another Oakland train, when a woman saw him standing over another #WOC, hand reaching into his pocket. The police apprehended him today without incident. Which I must be honest, strikes me... We’ve all seen videos of unarmed black men being tased for simply sitting on the sidewalk, or being thrown violently onto the hoods of cop cars over traffic violations. Yet this man, this racist criminal intimidating riders on a passenger train a day after murdering a teenage girl & attempting to murder her sister, is gingerly handcuffed & spoken to in soft worlds? The double standard must end. The silence around the death of women of color must end. And WHILE we’re at it, the behavior of news media that attempts to tarnish a victim after her untimely death must end. Running a photo of Nia smiling with a handgun on the news? (Which UPDATE was a freaking rubber cell phone case!! TF!?) Rather than an image of her from her recent high school graduation? I own a gun. I own a few. If I were murdered by a senseless maniac & my family was robbed of me, do you for ONE MINUTE think the news would run photos of me at the shooting range first & fore

This is INSANE. And this is not a drill. Light up the phones. Email link in bio. #Repost @momsdemand ・・・ URGENT ACTION NEEDED: A few days from now, *anyone* with a regular internet connection and a 3D printer will be able to make their own untraceable guns in just a couple clicks. This includes terrorists and people who can’t pass a background check. Incomprehensibly, the Trump @StateDept is about to allow a company run by a self-proclaimed anarchist to post its gun blueprints online in files that can be sent directly to a 3D printer to print guns on demand. To add more danger to this situation, many of these guns can be printed entirely in plastic, so metal detectors won’t catch them. These plastic guns could easily be snuck onto airplanes, into music festivals and government buildings. 3D printed guns will also undermine the work of law enforcement, who may recover untraceable guns at crime scenes and find their criminal investigations stymied before they even get off the ground. Downloadable guns completely undermine our federal and state firearm laws, which at their core block gun access for the people who pose the most serious danger to the public.⠀ ⠀ ‼️ Tell @SecretaryPompeo to #StopDownloadableGuns at the link in our bio.‼️

As I think about inspiration today, and how to add light to the world, I find myself coming back to @alittleradical. It’s technically a “children’s book,” but I read through it all of the time. It’s the A, B, C’s of Activism. It teaches kids, and adults too, how to love on the world. How to be part of a team, and how each person’s heart, commitment, and action can make the world a better place. • So, I’m reading you the first chapter today because I love you all. And because sometimes we all need an uplifting poem. If you want to read the rest of the book, written by my brilliant pals @jasonradical and @danicarussell, head to the link in my bio or the one on @alittleradical. Sometimes restoring our sense of childlike wonder and motivation is all we need. #MondayMantra #AisForAction

For all the partisan folks who couldn’t be bothered to swipe through the previous slides... Stop claiming this is fine so you can go on pretending that you aren’t ashamed that you voted for a traitor. You got duped. It sucks, I know. And I feel for you. But this is about our country. Period. There is NO EXCUSE FOR WHAT HE’S DONE. Don’t wanna take it from a gal who should “stick to acting?” Take it from the former head of the CIA, 17 Intelligence agencies, and the REPUBLICANS who are bringing mounting charges against the POTUS. Wake. Up. (And PS, if our jobs keep us from being educated participants in our society, then stick to banking/cooking/prescribing/driving or whatever the fuck it is YOU do for a living.) ✌🏼♥️🇺🇸

I’m still having a hard time finding the words to adequately describe my feelings, having watched the President of the United States commit treason on live television yesterday. This goes so far above and beyond party. This is about us. I cannot believe it. But we all saw it. This feels like a fitting time to circle back to the words of Marcus Tullius Cicero: • “A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.” • We have work to do, folks. Remember what we are fighting for and do not let the madness discourage you. Inaction is our second greatest enemy now. He is our first. #TrumpTreason #TreasonSummit #Helsinki

Kenneth! Happy day of birth my brother! You are the very best. I’m so grateful that I get to do life with you. Adventure with you. Eat tacos with you. See all of the shows. Dance til sunrise. Drive all of the roads. • One of my favorite moments of ours, when I was reminded of how we’re cut from the same cloth? S: Hey. NYE is next week. Should we ... do something? K: whatcha thinking? S: some pals are going to Panama... K: where? S: dunno K: for how long? S: not sure K: who’s going? S: like 30 people. @nialauryn and @npdemember! And a bunch of people I don’t know. K: what are we doing there? S: there’s a definitely something about an island. So ... fishing? K: I mean. Yeah. Should we look up tickets now? Five days later we were swigging rum on one of the San Blas Islands, spear fishing dinner, and dancing under the stars. There were no beds. But with a couple hammocks and some beach towels, we had the best camping trip ever. And we came home with @mikiagrawal, @ramy, @love.radha, @karla7117, @danfredinburg, @maxstossel, and so many more homies for life. Because when you make friendships, they’re real and lasting. • Kenny. My OG. My ride or die. My fellow Always Say Yes adventure sibling. I LOVE YOU SO AND I’M SO HAPPY YOU WERE BOOOOOORN! 🌟 (photo by the amazing @danielnjohnson)

Time for an unscheduled dance break with @bettywho fam!! • Y’all, I know times feel dark. And they are. But that makes it extra important to take moments for happiness. For self care. For wild enjoyment. I find that kind of deep, bone-shaking joy on a dance floor. And my sister baby angel queen #BettyWho just dropped the best, spiciest, makes me wanna dance all night, gender bending art piece on power and what it looks like and who gets to take it BANGER that I’ve heard in ages. Damn woman! • So BRB. I’m gonna shake it around my house. Then in the uber. Then dancing with the babes tonight. And again tomorrow morning on my walk. • Find some joy tonight, y’all. I love you. Happy end of #Pride month. Happy Friday. Recharge those batteries. Shake it out. #Taste #BettyWhoMusic #WWBD #ZADDY *link in bio* #YoureWelcome
